The new oak is a little more prominent here and will need time to be absorbed, but there is plenty of fruité and density on the finish; plus there is tangible mineralité and indeed, spiciness on the finish that has more concentration than Etienne Grivot's other Nuits-Saint-Georges. Inky dark fruit, spice, new leather, licorice, menthol and dried herbs emerge with a bit of time in the glass. Silky and sleek, with mid-weight structure, Camalaione is absolutely gorgeous in 2016. |

It is part of a broader trend that Montalcino vintners seem to be looking for cooler, high-altitude growing sites for Sangiovese. This wine demonstrates without a doubt that elevation is key in obtaining elegance in the warm years. This Brunello is particularly bright, punchy and energetic. It is one of the stars of this report. |

Damodes is positioned on the north side of the village immediately above Boudots (which sits adjacent to possibly Burgundies greatest premier Cru Vosne-Romanée Malconsorts) and on the border with Vosne-Romanée
The vineyard is on the upper slope with well-draining soil. The wines, whilst clearly made in the style of Nuits-Saint-Georges, show an influence from Vosne-Romanée next door. Notable floral notes and black fruit flavours.

It is steady on its proverbial feet, but it also glides over the palate with a profound sense of elegance, harmony and rhythm. Among the prized vintages of Masseto, including 2001, 2004 and 2007, this edition is my favorite. The wine delivers an extra sense of tightness or firmness at the back that serves to stitch together its fleshy richness and general sumptuousness. The personality is sunny, expansive, articulate and sophisticated. You'll remember that the 2006 vintage is celebrated for the elegance of its wines. In the coastal Bolgheri appellation, it is also remembered for the power of its wines. You get the best of both worlds with this stunning creation: elegance and power. For Camalaione, proprietors Luca Orsini and Valeria Viganò blend Cabernet Sauvignon with Syrah and Merlot, an approach that works so well here. The 2016 is wonderfully alluring, even if it is very much tightly wound in the early going. Inky dark fruit, spice, new leather, licorice, menthol and dried herbs emerge with a bit of time in the glass. Silky and sleek, with mid-weight structure, Camalaione is absolutely gorgeous in 2016. |

Vinous (96)The 2018 Camalaione is a gorgeous wine, obviously pretty atypical given the Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot/Syrah blend, but compelling nonetheless. Dark cherry, plum, mocha, spice, leather and grilled herbs saturate the palate in a wine of stunning depth and textural intensity. What a knock out. The 2018 spent two years in barrique, 50% new, and then a year in cement. |

Wine Advocate (96+)The Le Ragnaie 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Passo del Lume Spento (with 3,020 bottles made) sees its fruit sourced from one of the highest places in the appellation, or the "pass of the extinguished lantern," as the wine's name translates into English. It is part of a broader trend that Montalcino vintners seem to be looking for cooler, high-altitude growing sites for Sangiovese. This wine demonstrates without a doubt that elevation is key in obtaining elegance in the warm years. This Brunello is particularly bright, punchy and energetic. It is one of the stars of this report. |

The Premier Cru vineyards of Nuits-Saint-Georges are divided into sections.
Damodes is positioned on the north side of the village immediately above Boudots (which sits adjacent to possibly Burgundies greatest premier Cru Vosne-Romanée Malconsorts) and on the border with Vosne-Romanée
The vineyard is on the upper slope with well-draining soil. The wines, whilst clearly made in the style of Nuits-Saint-Georges, show an influence from Vosne-Romanée next door. Notable floral notes and black fruit flavours.
