  • Ornellaia Bianco 2019 (3x75cl)

    Jane Anson Inside Bordeaux (98)

Enticing waves of perfectly judged gunsmoke reduction on the first nose, dancing across the palate and hinting at minerality rather than closing things down. Fragrant, joyous, chiselled citrus, lime, chamomile and lemongrass, with a slate scrape texture giving grip, depth and persistency. I've said it before, but I put this right up there with my favourite dry white wines, alongside Pavillon Blanc, Remelluri Bianco and Penfold Yattarna. This is winemaker Axel Heinz working his magic. The 2020 Galatrona is stunning. In fact, the 2020 is one of the best vintages of the Galatrona I can remember tasting. I am especially impressed by its vertical intensity and explosive energy. All the elements are so impeccably woven together. Dark-toned fruit, crushed rocks, menthol, licorice and spice build into the intense, palate-staining finish. The nose is reticent, requiring quite a bit of coaxing, before a bouquet of fresh sweet strawberry, cherry, Tuscan spice box, dusty florals and hints of mint lift from the glass. On the palate, soft textures flood the senses, offset by tart red fruits, minerals and spice, as the 2018 seems to hover - well poised, almost weightless, yet still fully satisfying. • Salvioni Rosso di Montalcino 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (88)

The 2014 Rosso di Montalcino is the only wine Salvioni will release in a year marked by everything except good weather. Rain and poor overall conditions during the critical summer months plus an attack of the Suzukii fruit fly during harvest and high disease pressure proved to be too much to overcome. The 2014 Rosso is an attractive wine made from the best fruit Salvioni was able to salvage. Hints of dried cherry, tobacco, spice and dried herbs add modest complexity to a mid-weight wine that is best enjoyed sooner rather than later, before the forward flavors mature too much further. For the year, there is good depth and delineation, but even the Salvionis aren't miracle workers. Production is 10,000 bottles, down sharply from the 16-17,000 that are more of the norm here. Today, it looks like there will be no Rosso in 2012, 2013 or 2015.

  • Salvioni Rosso di Montalcino 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (89)

The 2017 Rosso di Montalcino is an intense, racy wine. Readers will find a rich, textured Rosso that captures all the power of the year. The volatile acidity is on the higher side, which is not unusual for traditionally made wines, but it is something readers who are especially sensitive should be aware of. There is no shortage of personality or character, though, that much is clear, but a full appreciation of the Salvioni 2017 Rosso requires a forgiving palate. Both bottles I tasted showed similarly.

  • Salvioni Rosso di Montalcino 2019 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (93+)

The darkly alluring 2019 Rosso di Montalcino captivates, as crushed ashen stone and balsam herbs give way to plum sauce and a hint of sweet mint. Its textures are like velvet yet lifted, with a tactile mix of sour cherries and ripe strawberries over a salty core of stimulating acids and minerals. The 2019 finishes structured, impossibly long and spicy, leaving a staining of primary concentration under an air of purple-toned inner florals. This is just an infant today with the potential for greatness. Frankly speaking, many producers would be lucky to be bottling a Brunello of this Rosso’s caliber.

  • San Guido Guidalberto 2016 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94+)

This wine is showing exceptionally well in this classic vintage. The 2016 Guidalberto (Cabernet Sauvignon and a smaller percentage of Merlot) opens to a full and generous bouquet and a beautifully rich and velvety appearance. This edition of Tenuta San Guido's mid-level wine offers a bigger aromatic profile, more texture and more volume as well. Dark cherry and blackberry segue to spice, tar, leather and sweet fruit at the end. The mouthfeel is elegantly shaped, silky and nuanced. This may well be the best vintage of Guidalberto I have yet to taste—and you can get this wine at a great price too.

Rocca di Montegrossi's ethos is one of quality and tradition, producing only 70,000 bottles yearly to ensure superior standards.

Hand-picked sangiovese grapes are skilfully blended with small quantities of canaiolo and colorino, matured 18 months in oak, & bottled unfiltered to enhance character & longevity. The Ridolfo 2016 presents a remarkable complexity, with rich black cherry and spicy undertones, a smooth velvety texture, and balanced acidity.

An exemplar of Italian viticulture, the Rocca di Montegrossi Ridolfo 2016 is an investment in fine wine, as pleasurable to the discerning connoisseur as it is to the novice collector.

  • Salvioni Rosso di Montalcino 2016 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

The 2016 Rosso di Montalcino is a gorgeous wine for readers who want to get a good sense of the Salvioni house style. Powerful and virile, with tons of personality, the 2016 is terrific. Grilled herbs, smoke, tobacco, licorice and menthol wrap around a core of dark Sangiovese fruit in this brooding, intense Rosso from the Salvioni family. The savory qualities of Sangiovese come through beautifully here. This is such a gorgeous Rosso.

  • San Giusto a Rentennano Percarlo 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (97)

The 2017 Percarlo is an exotic beauty. Rich and sumptuous in the glass, with tremendous fruit density, the 2017 packs a serious punch. Succulent dark cherry, plum, licorice, menthol and earthy notes emerge over time, but the tannins remain imposing. Like the Baròncole, the Percarlo needs cellaring to be at its best. The 2017 was much more forthcoming from barrel. It will reveal all of that sumptuousness once again, but not soon.

  • San Guido Guidalberto 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

The 2017 Guidalberto is a stellar wine. Rich, ample and resonant, the 2017 possesses superb depth and textural richness, both signatures of this warm, dry vintage. I suppose in the most technical sense, the 2017 is not the last word on complexity. But it is supremely delicious, it is that kind of wine opened and finished quickly - and of course, the ultimate goal of a wine is to deliver pleasure. The 2017 Guidalberto hits it out of the park on that level.
