  • Biondi Santi Brunello di Montalcino 2017 (6x75cl)

    Jeb Dunnuck (96)

The 2017 Brunello Di Montalcino is surprising in its freshness, considering the warmth of the vintage, and speaks to the cooler, northern-facing exposition of the estate. It is refined with ripe red cherry, raspberry, anise, and incense and is fresh with cherry fruit, warming spices, macchia, and herbes de Provence. It is ripe though it maintains a medium frame, with well-managed tannins and balanced acidity. It is a lovely and charming wine and is rather approachable now.

  • Canalicchio di Sopra Brunello di Montalcino 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is wildly perfumed, dusty and exotic, with balsam herbs, savory spices, red currants and plums coming across as so pretty yet rich and potent. A silky display of sour wild berries contrasted by candied citrus wows the senses as the 2017 plays a zesty sweet-and-sour act upon the palate. It’s long, youthfully chewy, yet still remarkably fresh, with rosy florals and tart, tart cherries giving way to chiseled tannins through the finale. This is a beautiful rendition of the 2017 vintage, one that takes the dry warmth of the year and expresses it with tremendous energy and verve. What's more, I revisited this bottle over the course of 36 hours and it only got better with time.

  • Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino 2017 (6x75cl)

Dusty florals, musky cherry and raspberry with hints of mentholated herbs waft up from the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino. This is enveloping and soft, with sweet exotic spices and juicy, vibrant acidity giving way to tart wild berries and rosy inner florals. There’s amazing length, hard red candies and violets, and sweet tannin that goes on and on, creating a somewhat chewy yet also fresh expression. The 2017 benefits from all of the fruit that would usually go into the single-vineyard Cerretalto Brunello, though even with it, production is down by 35%. That said, this is stunning juice.

  • Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova 2017 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

This is one of my all-time favorite Brunellos, and although personal tastes are fluid and may change from time to time, there is something timeless and solid about this wine. It's like a touchstone. The Casanova di Neri 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is graced with a similar interlude of elegant rose or crushed flower that we saw in the annata wine. It appears more prominently here, and with more shape and focused intensity. Make no mistake, Giacomo Neri builds wines for pleasure and sensual impact, and this wine (helped by a hot growing season and 15% alcohol) ticks all those boxes. But it also shows floral elegance and sour cherry freshness that defies our expectations of the vintage.

The 25–30% new oak is so neatly folded into the fruit that it is barely noticeable. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and quite citrus-driven, revealing orange peel and blood orange notes. The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is deeply expressive, showing peppery red berries and pomegranate plus hints of tomato leaf and sage, reminding me of that moment you add fresh herbs to a just-finished ragù. This is pure silk on the palate, rich and pliant, as it slowly saturates the senses with mineral-laced red and hints of blue fruit. Intensely primary and licorice-tinged, it tapers off grippy and classically dry to lasting rosy florals. The 2017 is a bit like a tamed beast of a Brunello.

The palate is very harmonious, open and transparent. It feels lighter than others, yet the tension and precision will see this age with style, and perhaps it will not close down. Aged in seasoned French oak barrels for 20 months, the wine effortlessly blends the unique qualities of the Chambolle-Musigny terroir while maintaining the fine-grained, polished texture characteristic of the Les Charmes vineyard. The 2017 vintage is a harmonious cultivation of red fruit aromas like raspberry and cherry, underscored by a delicate touch of wild herbs. This Burgundy red boasts of a medium-bodied palate, enhanced by softened tannin structure and an enduring finish. Francois Bertheau's commitment to low-intervention winemaking essentially lends to the pure, authentic expression of the Pinot Noir grape in the Francois Bertheau Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes 2017.

  • Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuees 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (93-95)

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fuées 1er Cru has an open-knit bouquet of red cherries, kirsch, orange zest and quince aromas, with notes of tobacco and sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, touches of meat juices permeating red fruit that merges with darker fruit on the gently gripping, beautifully focused finish. The domaine’s best in show this year? Quite possibly.

  • Gianni Brunelli Brunello di Montalcino 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92)

The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is deeply expressive, showing peppery red berries and pomegranate plus hints of tomato leaf and sage, reminding me of that moment you add fresh herbs to a just-finished ragù. This is pure silk on the palate, rich and pliant, as it slowly saturates the senses with mineral-laced red and hints of blue fruit. Intensely primary and licorice-tinged, it tapers off grippy and classically dry to lasting rosy florals. The 2017 is a bit like a tamed beast of a Brunello.

  • Jean Grivot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru La Combe d'Orveau 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (87-89)

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d’Orveau, wiped out last year after frost, has a straitlaced, rather reserved bouquet, touches of sous-bois and tobacco tincturing the red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a little foursquare and perhaps, relative to Grivot’s other 2017s, just missing a little energy on the finish.

  • Joseph Drouhin Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru has an open nose of brambly red fruit, sous-bois and wilted rose petals, very pure and charming, and not dissimilar in style to François Bertheau's Chambolle 1er Cru. The palate is very harmonious, open and transparent. It feels lighter than others, yet the tension and precision will see this age with style, and perhaps it will not close down. Tempting now, but I would prefer to wait. Classy. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

The Le Ragnaie 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is a delicate and graceful expression that unfolds carefully to reveal wild berry, dried lilac and pretty earthy tones. This 26,000-bottle release fits into that enviable school of Brunello that prioritizes tradition, elegance and purity. These are the basic traits of a great Sangiovese, but they are not easily achieved by all. Le Ragnaie's identity is deeply linked with these efforts. Lifted notes of dried mint or Mediterranean herb appear on the close.

  • Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino 2017 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (97)

Made with certified-organic fruit, the 2017 Brunello di Montalcino is an impossibly graceful wine from a challenging vintage. This bottle defies the odds—and the dry heat of the growing season—to reveal soft layers of cherry, cassis and more vibrant fruit. It glides clear over the palate with silky momentum, and you only notice the tannins at the very end. Even those should soften and integrate as this collectible wine continues it bottle evolution. Production is 19,000 bottles.

  • Romitorio Brunello di Montalcino 2017 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94)

The Castello Romitorio 2017 Brunello di Montalcino comes from an estate that is quickly becoming a leader in a special niche of the Montalcino market. The wine is modern and soft, showing lots of contained ripeness and creaminess, yet it successfully embraces the fundamentals of the appellation and Sangiovese, thanks to its bright acidity and finely tuned structure. Few wines reach this level of precision, especially in a challenging vintage such as this.
