  • Trapet Pere & Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Alea 2016 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (90-92)

(the yield here was just 15 hectoliters per hectare, according to Jean-Louis Trapet): Good bright medium red. Deeper on the nose than the preceding village wines, offering aromas of plum, currant, roast coffee and cocoa. Graceful, fine-grained wine, offering very good depth, intriguing saline minerality and noteworthy precision. More floral than herbal. The persistent finish features a subtle sweetness and suave tannins that saturate the sides of the tongue. This will be Trapet's only premier cru bottling from the 2016 vintage.

  • Vougeraie Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Bel Air 2019 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (91-93)

Apparently the berries were very aromatic when they entered the vat for the 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Bel-Air 1er Cru, which includes 40% whole bunches. It has a lovely bouquet of wild strawberry, raspberry and wild hedgerow scents, touches of iris flower emerging with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite fleshy and velvety-smooth in texture. There is more density here on the finish, which shows touches of spice and marmalade and fans out nicely. This should evolve well in bottle.

  • Zenato Amarone della Valpolicella Sergio Zenato Riserva 2016 (6x75cl)

    Decanter (97)

This remarkable Amarone won the very highest acclaim from its original judging panel and then sailed through every subsequent judging stage, to the extent that its appearance in our Best In Show collection was never seriously in doubt. It’s already over five years old, but is still very dark in the glass -- and it’s a wine of remarkable aromatic complexity, too. Amarone-lovers will know just how many allusions these wines are capable of evoking, and it’s not hard to make out mushrooms, forest underbrush, truffle, Havana leaf and even woodland violets as well as the more usual confit cherries and plums in this wine’s aromatic profile. In the mouth, the wine is remarkably concentrated yet elegant, carrying that bundle of allusions effortlessly and seamlessly through the palate. Fine-beaded tannins lend support, and the concentration of fruit is such that any overt acidity is almost an afterthought.
