Brilliant purple. Dark fruit, floral and spice qualities on the hugely perfumed, expansive nose, along with suggestions of incense, olive and smoky minerals. Stains the palate with powerful, youthfully concentrated blueberry, cassis, spicecake and violet pastille flavors that are given spine and lift by a core of zesty acidity. Lingers with outstanding tenacity on the sharply delineated, floral-driven finish, which is shaped by chewy, slow-building tannins.

Opening in the glass with notions of raspberries, plums, dark chocolate and toasty oak, the 2017 Pommard 1er Cru Les Epenots is medium to full-bodied, layered and elegant, with good depth and concentration in this charming, supple vintage. While it won't ever match the 2016 and 2015 renditions, it will offer two decades of delicious drinking.

Lieux-dits Patou, Mazard and Sauman, 70% destemmed, aged for 15 months in old barriques. A nose that draws you in and pulls you under; it’s very tightly wound for now, but contains fresh, ripe black fruits, Asian spices, soy and some woodland aromas. Full-bodied, but not massive or overly thick, it coats the palate in super-fresh fruit and very fine tannins. There is ample acidity too to help shape the wine. This is very powerful, but what hits you is the extraordinary aromatic and textural refinement of what can be an untameable terroir. Very, very long, saline finish.

Tasted from tank prior to bottling, the 2016 Cornas Granit 60 has the potential to eclipse the 2015. The nose is an exciting blend of flowers, minerals and fruit, while the palate is full-bodied and generous without the hardness or austerity of the 2015. This standout 2016 finishes long, plush and bright. With only about 5,000 bottles made, shrewd buyers will snap it up on release.

Le Geynale is the producer's flagship Cornas sourced from top vineyard sites and old vines. The 2018 Cornas La Geynale is largely in the same style as the Granit 60, only with the gamey, bloody and meaty character (as well as tannins) turned up a notch. Black and blue fruits, rare meat, ground pepper, and wild herbs all give way to a structured, tannic wine that has beautiful purity and elegance. It's not for those looking for instant gratification, however. This cuvée comes from a single parcel, is not destemmed, and will see 16 months in 2- to 8-year-old barrels.

This wine hails from two parcels situated just across the road from the Serein river, each at a 52% slope. These bits were always included in the main Bougros cuv e until Didier came along in 1998. The 2019 Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos has turned out brilliantly, mingling aromas of orange oil, confit citrus and crisp green apple with notes of warm bread, white flowers, oyster shell and anise in an incipiently complex bouquet. Full-bodied, layered and muscular, it's concentrated and tightly wound, with broad shoulders and huge depth at the core, concluding with a long, electric finish. William's father planted these vines in 1947, 1948, 1950 and 1952. All are in the upper part of Les Clos. Their positioning simultaneously offers freshness and power. Yellow cherries, yellow tomatoes and summer herbs deliver a bold palate. It's a tsunami of flavor, and the structure is equally dominating. Give this time to harmonize further though it wouldn't disappoint if you sipped it now. 2026-45

Tim Atkin MW (96)

This wine hails from two parcels situated just across the road from the Serein river, each at a 52% slope. These bits were always included in the main Bougros cuv e until Didier came along in 1998. This cuv e has magical complexity – as ever – with incredible freshness and full-throttle flavor intensity. There is plentiful orchard fruit contrasted by wet stone freshness. The dense palate feel is counter-balanced by granular texture. For every push there is a pull. 2023-40

Wine Advocate (96)

The 2019 Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos has turned out brilliantly, mingling aromas of orange oil, confit citrus and crisp green apple with notes of warm bread, white flowers, oyster shell and anise in an incipiently complex bouquet. Full-bodied, layered and muscular, it's concentrated and tightly wound, with broad shoulders and huge depth at the core, concluding with a long, electric finish. It was cropped at 25 hectoliters per hectare.
