I was able to taste two wines from the 2017 vintage, and I suspect that no Quet cuvée was produced. The 2017 Châteauneuf Du Pape checks in as a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre that was brought up mostly in concrete tank, with 20% in older barrels. This powerful, ripe, incredibly sexy beauty should be snatched up by readers. Blackcurrants, black cherries, ground herbs, graphite, and licorice notes all flow to a deep, full-bodied, rockingly textured base cuvée that more than delivers the goods. Expansive, layered, and concentrated, it competes with most special cuvées out there. It's not for wimps. Drink this terrific wine over the coming decade.

Wow. Fabulous aromas of currants, rosemary, mint and orange peel. Perfect nose. Full body with perfectly integrated tannins. It's long and incredible with tangerine, toasted-oak, berry, terracotta and chocolate flavors. It lasts for minutes on the palate. This needs at least five years to soften but so spellbinding now.

It’s full-bodied with firm, silky tannins that run long and straight through the wine, providing brightness and focus. Goes on for minutes. Serralunga d'Alba. Youthful mid ruby. Savoury and minerally cherry fruit on the nose. Compact, sour-cherry palate that is elegant and lively, but still embryonic and with a rich layer of finely woven tannins. Cranberry and sour cherry of great length on the finish. The palate really lulls you into thinking you could approach it now.

Well-knit tannins add grip to a penetrating finish that leaves behind notes of dark berry preserves and spicecake.

The 2017 Barolo Castelletto is fabulous. It is also the wine in this range that feels the least marked by heat. Red/purplish fruit, blood orange, mint, spice and lavender all grace this beautifully translucent, expressive Barolo. There is some tannin that needs to soften - this is Monforte after all - but all the elements are impeccably balanced.

The 2017 Siepi is a total knock-out and one of the best recent vintages I can remember tasting. All the elements simply fall into place. Succulent dark cherry, spice, chocolate, leather and licorice build as the 2017 gains volume in the glass. Sangiovese and Merlot have rarely been so complementary. The 2017 is a gorgeous wine that offers plenty of the richness readers have become accustomed to over the years, but in a slightly less extracted style.

Grown on limestone and sand-loam soils close to the ocean. The coolest of the single vineyard chardonnay sites. Aromas of cashew and oatmeal mingle with white-fleshed stone fruit and a suggestion of salty sea breezes. Tight and precise on the palate, green apple and citrus curd flavours run into a long, textural, minerally finish. Drink by 2027

Even better and shockingly good in the vintage, the 2011 Cote Rotie Lancement is 100% Syrah that comes from the more southern end of the appellation (more Cote Blonde than Cote Brune). Giving the top Belle Helene cuvee a run for its money, this thrilling 2011 dishes out spectacular notes sweet berry fruit, bacon, pepper and gamy nuances that flow to a full-bodied, seamless and incredibly textured, lengthy feel on the palate. Possessing no hard edges and perfect integration of its acidity, tannin and fruit, this is riveting stuff that should not be missed!

The 2017 Beaune Village really over-performs this year, bursting with aromas of cherries, raspberries, licorice, orange rind, grilled ceps and peonies. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, succulent and enveloping, with fine depth and concentration, powdery structuring tannins and a long, sapid finish. Combining substance with structural charm, this will offer a broad drinking window. As ever, this cuvée is a blend of premiers crus Boucherottes and Epenottes with the lieux-dits Prevolles and Beaux Fougets, so the raw materials are unusually serious for a communal bottling.

Unusually approachable for a Gaunoux Renardes, this is nonetheless constructed for a long and rewarding life.

Bright, fresh and super pleasing nose right out of the gate, though the bouquet closed down quite quickly but the quality is obviously there. Structurally sound and showing a nice, silky texture.

The 2017 vintage was one of the milder vintages in WA. The latest Moss Wood captures this vintage perfectly and is without doubt one of the more restrained and tightly framed Moss Woods of recent years. Not the opulence of 2014 or the firm power of the 2016. Yet it retains the elegance, perfume and soft approachability that is Moss Wood. And hidden within is a wine that I suspect will still be drinking beautifully in 30 years. Make sure you decant it even now before drinking.
