This single-vineyard wine, from Aana, is made in a modern style: concentrated and slightly reductive. It shows notes of new oak barrels, lovely red berry fruit (reminiscent of Grenache) and garrigue aromas. So Mediterranean on the palate, with sweet tannins, spices and a meaty hint on the aftertaste. I would give the 2017 a few years in bottle, but it won’t need more than that to start drinking well. In 2017, Roberto Conterno did not bottle his vineyard-designates. Highland Park Distillery is one of the world’s greatest single malt whiskies. In 2018, Highland Park ranked 2nd behind only Macallan in volume of auction sales. Located on the island of Orkney, the distillery was founded in 1798 by Magnus Eunson. Eunson was a colourful character who was a butcher and church warden by day and an illicit whisky smuggler by night!
Highland Park is the only distillery to use peat from Orkney in the distillation process. It has more power, depth and structure than the Serraboella, with a slightly darker tonalities of fruit and more tannic heft, but the differences between the two wines are not as marked as they can be. That’s what happens sometimes in warm, dry vintages – the differences between sites are baked out. Even so, the Sorì Paitin offers quite a bit of character.
