  • Elio Grasso Barolo Gavarini Chiniera 2013 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (96)

The 2013 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is much showier than the Ginestra Casa Matè. An ample, resonant Barolo, the Gavarini Chiniera exudes richness from the get-go. Macerated cherry, kirsch, wild flowers and mint are some of the many notes that are laced together. Ripe, silky tannins add to the wine's considerable raciness. I am somewhat surprised by how well this gorgeous wine is showing today.

  • Elio Grasso Barolo Ginestra Casa Mate 2013 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

The 2013 Barolo Ginestra Casa Maté does a great job of portraying its vineyard characteristics. This single vineyard is located at higher altitudes with thicker clay soils. This combination helps to build the wine's intensity, structure and muscle. It undergoes 45 days of submerged cap fermentation. Dark cherry and blackberry open the bouquet. These aromas are followed by spice, smoke, iron and crushed mineral. The robust nature of those aromas makes for a beautiful contrast to the fine, silky and more delicate (relatively speaking) nature of the mouthfeel.

  • Elvio Cogno Barolo Bricco Pernice 2013 (6x75cl)

    Wine Enthusiast (97)

Forest floor, dried rose petal, new leather, star anise and menthol aromas align with a potpourri of dark cooking spice. The full-bodied yet linear palate delivers juicy Marasca cherry, crushed strawberry, licorice and aromatic herb set against taut, elegant tannins. Vibrant acidity lends balance, tension and an ageworthy structure. Drink 2023–2038.

The 2014 Barolo Bricco Pernice is vivid, precise and flat-out stunning. Like the best wines of the year, the Bricco Pernice is going to need a bit of time to be at its very best. I find the wine's inner perfume and sweetness to be utterly beguiling. At the same time, the Bricco Pernice remains taut, classically austere and in need of cellaring.

  • Enzo Tiezzi Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Soccorso 2013 (6x75cl)

Bright red. Violet, herbs and faded flowers on the fragrant nose. The red cherry, licorice and orange peel flavors show good inner-mouth perfume and a youthfully chewy quality, plus a subtle hint of leather at the back that adds complexity. Strikes me as being the best entry-level Brunello from Tiezzi in years.

Bright ruby-red. Captivating violet and lavender lift to the aromas of black cherry, menthol and bitter chocolate. Juicy, energetic and sharply delineated, showing terrific thrust to its dark fruit, licorice and spice flavors. I would have picked this blind as a 2013. This will require at least several years of bottle aging.

  • Fattoria La Massa Giorgio Primo 2013 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (97)

This is a truly sumptuous wine that stands as a tall testament to the winemaking talents of Giampaolo Motta, his vision for interpreting this vintage and his specific vineyard site in Panzano in Chianti. This standout wine brings Fattoria la Massa to a new level of accomplishment and opens an exciting new chapter of possibility. The 2013 Giorgio Primo (50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot) is dark and impenetrable on first impact. The aromas accelerate slowly and grow evenly in power and intensity after a few quick swirls of the glass. The bouquet peels back with dark fruit aromas, baking spice and Mediterranean herb. The effect is seamless and smooth. A velvety texture is accented by full-bodied richness and just enough freshness to keep the palate energized. And, of course, this is just the beginning of a long cellar life.

  • Felsina Fontalloro 2013 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

Gorgeous and soft, the 2013 Fontalloro is another landmark wine from this classic vintage. There is enormous intensity here and the wine is only at the beginning of its long aging trajectory. I suggest you put off drinking it for five to ten more years. There is evident thickness and generosity here, especially in the way those bold fruit favors are woven between dark spice and leather. There are sour accents on the close that remind you of the wine's youth. The tannins are fine and well integrated.

The 2014 Figeac is shaping up to be a real jewel of a wine. Powerful and structured, with plenty of tannic spine, the 2014 won't start hitting its stride for at least a few years. Even today, though, it is impressive for its energy and overall intensity. Plum, smoke, spice, graphite and leather build into the huge, expressive finish. Figeac is one of the stars of the vintage. Unapologetically rich and intense, the 2013 is beautifully layered and voluptuous to the core. All the elements fall into place effortlessly. • Fontodi Chianti Classico 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92)

Fontodi's 2014 Chianti Classico is one of the most finessed vintages of this wine in recent memory. The combination of the cool growing conditions and a move toward larger oak casks has resulted in a deep yet translucent wine of notable pedigree and class. There is plenty of the typical Panzano richness, but less of the overt weight that has characterized some recent vintages.

The 2014 Flaccianello della Pieve will probably drink well a bit earlier than the Vigna del Sorbo, as it has more midpalate creaminess, softer contours and a slightly more immediate personality. Even so, the translucent finesse of the vintage is very much in evidence. A rush of black cherry, plum, tobacco, licorice, chocolate and spice infuses the sweet, creamy finish. Also more restrained and tightly wound in the mouth, but with vibrant acidity and a sensation of peppery grip giving the wine terrific inner-mouth energy. Classic 2013 in its tautness and cut. • Fratelli Alessandria Barolo San Lorenzo 2013 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (93+)

The 2013 Barolo San Lorenzo di Verduno is a big, powerful wine with huge tannins, broad shoulders and tons of overall intensity. Bold, dark flavors laced with expressive, balsamic overtones are some of the signatures. As always, the strapping, full-bodied San Lorenzo needs time to shed some of its youthful tannin, but it is impressive just the same. Moreover, San Lorenzo is one of the rare Verduno crus that emphasizes power over finesse, in the way one might say the same about Bonnes Mares in Chambolle-Musigny, for example.

  • GD Vajra Barolo Albe 2014 (6x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (91)

A tribute to local tradition, the 2014 Barolo Albe represents an assembly of fruit from various vineyard plots throughout the area. Winemaking is classic in approach with a 25-day maceration period and aging in large Slavonian oak casks. This vintage shows silky, fine lines and a more accessible approach for near and medium-term drinking. I would recommend a few more years of bottle aging, however, to allow the wine the time to grow in texture and mouthfeel.

The 2014 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is positively stunning. There are many things about this wine that are super-impressive, but what stands out most is how soft and silky the tannins are. Because of that, the 2014 is much more approachable than it usually is, and yet also conveys the feeling of translucence that is such a signature of this site and wine. I am not sure I have ever tasted a young Bricco delle Viole with this much purity of fruit. The 2014 is total class. Don't miss it.

The Giacomo Conterno 2014 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is made with 100% fruit from the Francia cru, which is not the case for the 2015 vintage (that sees 22% Arione in the blend) or likely future vintages.

  • Gaja Barolo Conteisa 2014 (6x75cl)

    James Suckling (98)

The nose opens with a startling play between white truffles, bark and tea leaves and then crushed violets, lavender, blueberry peel, lemon rind and sour cherries. Full body, ultra-fine tannins, acidity as sharp as a razor and a long, ethereally mineral finish. The length but sheer clarity and accuracy in the delivery is remarkable. Perhaps hard to believe that this better than the 2013, but it is. Drink in 2022.

  • GD Vajra Barolo Bricco Delle Viole 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (96)

The 2014 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is positively stunning. There are many things about this wine that are super-impressive, but what stands out most is how soft and silky the tannins are. Because of that, the 2014 is much more approachable than it usually is, and yet also conveys the feeling of translucence that is such a signature of this site and wine. I am not sure I have ever tasted a young Bricco delle Viole with this much purity of fruit. The 2014 is total class. Don't miss it.

  • GD Vajra Barolo Ravera 2013 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (95+)

The 2013 Barolo Ravera is tightly wound and austere, with tons of its energy in reserve. Lavender, violet, plum, spice and menthol are beautifully delineated throughout. In some vintages Ravera is explosive, but the 2013 is very much closed in on itself. Attractive scents of rose petal, mint, sweet red berries and chalk infuse the taut, salivating finish. My instincts say this is going to be a very special wine one day.

  • GD Vajra Barolo Ravera 2014 (6x75cl)

    Jancis Robinson (17)

Novello. Tasted blind. Surprisingly dark ruby for this vintage. Brooding richness on the nose. Plenty of sour cherry on the palate and firm, somewhat drying tannins. This is still very youthful, and unsettled.

  • Georges Mugneret Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2014 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (98)

The 2014 Ruchottes-Chambertin is a wondrous wine. Two recent tastings in Burgundy reconfirmed its strong performance when poured blind at the Burgfest tasting. It has an intense pomegranate and raspberry scented bouquet that seems to switch up through the gears with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and lithe, laden with succulent black fruit and insistent grip, perhaps just beginning to close up for a while. Outstanding. Tasted in Burgundy.

  • Ghizzano Nambrot Toscana 2013 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (93)

Ghizzano's 2013 Nambrot is another gorgeous wine from Ghizzano. Black cherry, blackberry, menthol, licorice, lavender and cloves are some of the many notes that develop. There is lovely succulence to the fruit, yet the 2013 remains mid-weight, gracious and highly expressive. The blend is 60% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Petit Verdot.

  • Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino 2013 (1x150cl)
  • Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino 2014 (3x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (100)

The Giacomo Conterno 2014 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is made with 100% fruit from the Francia cru, which is not the case for the 2015 vintage (that sees 22% Arione in the blend) or likely future vintages. In a sense, this 100-point wine represents a milestone or a chapter finale in the long and exciting trajectory of Italy's collected and revered Monfortino. I've had the great fortune of tasting this wine from barrel over the course of four years and twice again this summer during my visits to the Conterno estates (in Gattinara and in Monforte d'Alba).

    Wine Spectator (96)

A perfumed style, boasting floral, cherry, kirsch and licorice flavors. Slightly chewy, yet elegant overall, with fine balance and a lingering finish of macerated cherry, earth and tobacco notes. Shows fine length and intensity, leaving an essence of mineral. Best from 2021 through 2043. 1,941 cases made.
