Still deep, dark, almost inky in color, the wine offers off the hook aromas of smoked truffle, cigar box, tobacco, black and dark red fruit with spice box, tobacco leaf and smoke filled nuances. This is a stunning wine that brings together the intensely savory personality of the Cabernet Franc/Merlot hybrid allied to the voluptuousness of the warm vintage. Bright red. The intense note of violet on the nose is absolutely captivating and nicely lifts the aromas of sweet red cherry and aromatic oils. Then very rich, dense and juicy, conveying a seamless quality to its multilayered orchard fruit, spicy red berry and mineral flavors. The exhilarating finish echoes with lingering and repeating floral and mineral notes nicely extended by lipsmacking but harmonious acidity. Classic vintages such as the 2013 really showcase Il Marroneto’s magnificent terroir to its fullest capacity; in these vintages, talented Alessandro Mori produces sleek, refined Brunellos that are true benchmarks of Sangiovese in Montalcino. Sangiovese-whisperer Alessandro Mori has delivered another superstar wine with the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Madonna Delle Grazie. The bouquet is detailed and fine with bright accents of fragrant red rose, red currant, cola, licorice, grilled herb and crushed white peppercorn. The bouquet is loose, light and buoyant, with a smooth and natural progression of building aromas. The mouthfeel, however, is direct, important and determined. It's that playful juxtaposition between the wine's soft side and its stern side that makes this such an interesting and sensational wine to drink. The harvest date returned once more to that of tradition, commencing on 23 September – whereas these days it usually begins around 3 September. This could therefore be considered a fresh if not cool vintage, yet the long growing season helped the extraction of velvety tannins, concentrated on the mid-palate. The structure, combined with bright cassis notes, a core of cherry and crystallised violet, and savoury minerality on the finish, will keep the wine in good shape for the long haul.Inc. VAT£268.84 -

This compellingly beautiful wine opens with aromas that include a piercing, lemony fruit, salty minerality, chalk, smoke and spice. On the palate, there is a beautiful tension, but also enough substance to give the wine breadth and a lovely, impressive length. It is structured and very crisp, yet still approachable and easy to drink. It was produced from a blend of the lieux-dits Le Cotet and Les Paluets, exclusively fermented in tank. (this was racked off its lees the day before my visit and was slated to be bottled before the 2011 harvest): Slightly cloudy yellow. Aromas of peach, apple, spices and crushed stone, with a hint of noble reduction. At once chewy and smooth, with a distinctly taut quality to its flavors of apricot, minerals, anise and flint. Finishes saline and powerful, with a flavor of custard pie as well as a note of grapefruit pith that tickles the taste buds. Lots of aging potential here.Inc. VAT£2,539.24 -

Good medium red. Slightly reduced, reserved aromas of kirsch, minerals and clove. Quite taut in the mouth, and showing much more energy in bottle than it displayed from barrel in November of 2010. The medicinal redcurrant and red cherry fruit flavors are complemented by saline and pronounced spice qualities. Ultimately silky and classy wine, with a long, clinging finish that shows continuing spice character. This needs a good eight to ten years of bottle aging.Inc. VAT£4,111.24 -

The 2013 Chevalier-Montrachet Clos de Chevalier Grand Cru has a slightly muffled bouquet compared to its peers, needing to muster more precision and mineral expression. The palate is fresh on the entry with a smooth and lightly honeyed texture, vanilla and white chocolate notes from the new oak, perhaps a little too generous for a wine of this standing yet undeniably quite delicious. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Nuits Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Pruliers has a refined bouquet with undergrowth-infused red berry fruit, a little rustic but charming and expressive. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp red cherry and strawberry fruit, fine tannin and prudent use of oak. There is focus and precision here, decent length and class. The greatest wines Chave has produced since 2003 are the two cuvees of 2009 Hermitage. The 2009 Hermitage exhibits a black/purple color along with a sumptuous nose of roasted meats, ground pepper, black currants, blackberry jam, and subtle smoke and licorice. The extraordinary bouquet is followed by a wine of extravagant intensity as well as tremendous focus and precision. While not as powerful as the blockbuster 2003, the amazing 2009 may turn out to be a modern day version of their magnificent 1990 (which is drinking incredibly well at present). A blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc aged in 100% new oak, with 15% natural alcohol, it exhibits a sumptuous bouquet of caramels, black raspberry liqueur, blackberries, violets, graphite and truffles. Thick, viscous flavors are reminiscent of such super-ripe vintages as 1982, 1959, 1949 and 1947. The 2013 Lafleur was one of my favorite wines from barrel because, as Baptiste Guinaudeau remarked when I visited the property, he did not try to make a Pomerol beyond what it could be. The nose might not possess the complexity of the best vintages of Lafleur, but it is clearly delineated and fresh, with blackberry and raspberry fruit, a subtle granitic scent tucked underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannin, as is often the case for Lafleur, with crunchy red berry fruit and a stony, almost reserved but fresh finish that lingers nicely in the mouth. The bouquet is loose, light and buoyant, with a smooth and natural progression of building aromas. The mouthfeel, however, is direct, important and determined. It's that playful juxtaposition between the wine's soft side and its stern side that makes this such an interesting and sensational wine to drink. The harvest date returned once more to that of tradition, commencing on 23 September – whereas these days it usually begins around 3 September. This could therefore be considered a fresh if not cool vintage, yet the long growing season helped the extraction of velvety tannins, concentrated on the mid-palate. This compellingly beautiful wine opens with aromas that include a piercing, lemony fruit, salty minerality, chalk, smoke and spice. On the palate, there is a beautiful tension, but also enough substance to give the wine breadth and a lovely, impressive length. It is structured and very crisp, yet still approachable and easy to drink. It was produced from a blend of the lieux-dits Le Cotet and Les Paluets, exclusively fermented in tank. (this was racked off its lees the day before my visit and was slated to be bottled before the 2011 harvest): Slightly cloudy yellow. Aromas of peach, apple, spices and crushed stone, with a hint of noble reduction. At once chewy and smooth, with a distinctly taut quality to its flavors of apricot, minerals, anise and flint. Finishes saline and powerful, with a flavor of custard pie as well as a note of grapefruit pith that tickles the taste buds. Lots of aging potential here.In Bond£2,100.00 -

Good medium red. Slightly reduced, reserved aromas of kirsch, minerals and clove. Quite taut in the mouth, and showing much more energy in bottle than it displayed from barrel in November of 2010. The medicinal redcurrant and red cherry fruit flavors are complemented by saline and pronounced spice qualities. Ultimately silky and classy wine, with a long, clinging finish that shows continuing spice character. This needs a good eight to ten years of bottle aging.In Bond£3,410.00 -

The 2013 Chevalier-Montrachet Clos de Chevalier Grand Cru has a slightly muffled bouquet compared to its peers, needing to muster more precision and mineral expression. The palate is fresh on the entry with a smooth and lightly honeyed texture, vanilla and white chocolate notes from the new oak, perhaps a little too generous for a wine of this standing yet undeniably quite delicious. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp red cherry and strawberry fruit, fine tannin and prudent use of oak. There is focus and precision here, decent length and class. The 2013 Lafleur was one of my favorite wines from barrel because, as Baptiste Guinaudeau remarked when I visited the property, he did not try to make a Pomerol beyond what it could be. The nose might not possess the complexity of the best vintages of Lafleur, but it is clearly delineated and fresh, with blackberry and raspberry fruit, a subtle granitic scent tucked underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannin, as is often the case for Lafleur, with crunchy red berry fruit and a stony, almost reserved but fresh finish that lingers nicely in the mouth.
