(LLSNFF): Vibrant yellow-gold. Smoke- and mineral-accented pear and Meyer lemon on the deeply scented nose, with notes of ginger, vanilla bean and white flowers adding complexity and lift. Sappy, deeply pitched orchard and pit fruit flavors are braced by juicy acidity, picking up sweet butter and anise nuances with air. Chewy and mineral-driven, with superb clarity and slow-building spiciness. An exotic touch of iodine emerges on the finish, which shows outstanding focus and toasty persistence. The combination of power and energy here is really impressive.

Wine Advocate (95)

Disgorged four years ago, with four grams per liter dosage, after a decade sur lattes and six years sur pointes, the 2000 Cristal Vinothèque bursts with notes of golden orchard fruit, mandarin, white flowers and iodine. Full-bodied, ample and powerful, with a deep and layered core, lively acids and a beautifully pearly mousse, it's a long, sapid Champagne that's showing very well today. As Lecaillon observes, the Vinothèque is the house's riposte to "everyone who says Cristal is released too young—with the Vinothèque releases, we've exaggerated the aging process to make Cristal more powerful and more dramatic." And this release is certainly a formidable effort in a vintage impacted by hail in the Montagne de Reims.

Vinous (97)

Here is another Nikolaihof offering that I was given a rare opportunity to taste prior to bottling. But perhaps the Saahs family will rethink their generosity with sneak previews, given that I now feel compelled to publish a substantially updated tasting note to reflect the significantly more impressive showing delivered by this wine a year after its late summer 2016 bottling. As before, the nose is head-turningly complex, offering black tea and Latakia tobacco smokiness, coriander-seed pungency, high-toned pistachio extract, intimations of red currant, lime and white peach and a remarkable array of mineral and animal intimations: sea breeze, sweat, wet stone, oyster liquor and mussel stock. What I earlier described as a “silken and expansive yet buoyant palate” has taken on an almost custardy richness. Yet the accompanying juicy brightness of fruit – now including a tang of fresh ripe tomato – has by no means diminished in animation, intensity or sheer refreshment. The vibrant finish tugs at one’s salivary glands with suggestions of urchin roe and shellfish stock while delivering a kaleidoscope of herbal, mineral and fruity diversity.

Hailing from Hungary, the Oremus Aszu Tokaji 5 Puttonyos 2000 is an exceptional display of a meticulous winemaking craft. This esteemed wine is from the renowned Oremus vineyard, precipitously positioned in the heart of the Tokaj region. The 2000 vintage is crafted from Furmint and Harslevelu grape varietals, which following a late harvest, undergo botrytis cinerea or 'noble rot' to concentrate their flavours. A unique process known as 'Puttonyos' assesses sugar content, with this bottle achieving a 5 out of 6, underpinning its lush sweetness.

This wine is a glowing amber hue, featuring divine notes of honey, apricot, and spices. An extended maturation in Hungarian oak barrels imparts a rich complexity. The Oremus Aszu Tokaji 5 Puttonyos 2000 is a testament to Tokaji's historic wine heritage and a proof of Oremus' commitment to producing wines of the highest calibre. Savour this magnificently aged sweet wine, a genuine taste of Hungary's winegrowing prowess.

Exotic liqueur-like nose; in a slightly oxidative phase today. Dense and plump, with a captivating honeysuckle flavor. Shows good depth and power, not to mention length, but finishes with a trace of alcoholic bitterness. Still, Noel and I agreed that this, like the Ruchottes, is more typical for its site than most of his other 2003s. (Ramonet's Bienvenue-Batard-Montrachet showed a more exaggerated nut skin character and was impossible to assess with confidence, while the impressively fat Le Montrachet was rather heavy as well as a bit tired. I will report on these wines next year after they're in bottle. ).

Wonderfully pure, high-pitched nose melds quinine, pineapple, crushed stone, orange zest, violet and lavender; smells like a current release. Densely packed and very rich, with seamless flavors of crushed wet stone, lichee and grapefruit complicated by notes of baked bread and honey. This is very much like licking a rock, and yet there are complicating hints of tropical fruits here too. Wonderfully classy, pure wine with a tactile, classy, very subtle and long finish. Still a baby, and compellingly vibrant for a wine from the 2000 vintage. The driest wine in this vertical tasting, at just 1.3 grams per liter of residual sugar.

Emanating from the esteemed vineyards of Germany’s Moselle region, the Von Schubert Maximin Grunhauser Herrenberg Riesling Auslese 2003 offers a pure and enchanting experience. The product of VDP-classified estate, Weingut Von Schubert, which has been producing fine wine since the 9th century, this wine speaks volume about its rich heritage.

The 2003 vintage is an exceptional reflection of the distinctive blue Devonian slate soil of the Herrenberg Großes Gewächs site. The wine itself was created with a careful hand, privileging selective hand harvesting to ensure the highest berries quality. Displaying a uniquely ethereal character, this Riesling Auslese resonates with luscious sweetness counterbalanced by characteristic Mosel acidity. Crystal-clear flavours of succulent tropical fruit are underpinned by notes of minerality, reflecting the rich terroir from which it hails.

From its beautiful golden hue to the intricate taste profile, the Von Schubert Maximin Grunhauser Herrenberg Riesling Auslese 2003 proves a prestigious addition to any discerning connoisseur's collection.
