  • Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Cros Parantoux 2003 (6x75cl)

    Vintage Tastings (93)

There was one more Burgundy on our agenda, a 2003 Rouget Vosne Romanee Cros Parantoux. The Rouget had a deep, saucy, concentrated nose, again this grilled endive thing around a core of plum, cassis, soda and liqueur. It was a thick wine, and the second tasty 2003 Burg that I had had on this trip. It was really good, hedonistic and rich, long and concentrated, sweet and hearty, if anything a touch too sweet, but hey, that's 2003 (93).

  • Faiveley Clos-de-Vougeot Grand Cru 2000 (12x75cl)

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (88-90)

Good full deep red. Smoky aromas of cherry, currant and iron, lifted by floral and mineral elements. Densely packed but closed, and distinctly dry after the Mazis and Latricieres. Cool flavors of dark berries, minerals and mint. Strong tannins coat the teeth and currently shorten the wine fruit. This was rather heavily extracted: like the Nuits Lavieres, it got a bit more pigeage

  • Faiveley Corton Clos des Cortons Faiveley Grand Cru 2003 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (91+)

Very deep red, by far the darkest in the tasting; showing no amber yet. Bordeaux-like nose combines redcurrant, black raspberry, graphite, mocha, cedar, licorice, mint and bouquet garni; it's hard to recognize Burgundy here (Jérôme Flous noted that we feared that 2018 would be like 2003 but we were saved by having a lot of moisture in the soil). A medicinal, mouthfilling monster with its black fruit and menthol flavors conveying a distinctly southern dried-fruit and Provençal herb character. Today the finish is cut off by palate-shattering tannins. Erwan Faiveley describes this as one of the biggest Burgundies I've ever tasted, noting that its IPT (indice de polyphénols totaux) is 130, which is off the charts. And I recall that when François Faiveley first showed me this wine from barrel in late 2004 (he bottled it early, in December of that year), he predicted that it would need at least 15 years of bottle aging; that has turned out to be an understatement. In fact, I wonder if this bulletproof wine will ever truly be easy to drink. I'm not sure if I would have pegged it blind as Pinot Noir. (This wine weighs in at 14.4% alcohol, while the rest of the vintages in this tasting are typically between 13.2% and 13.7%; 3.57 pH; 3.5 g/l acidity; from a harvest that began on August 25; just 18 hectoliters per hectare produced)

Saturated red-ruby. Aromas of cassis, black cherry, mineral and flowers. Quite primary and a bit youthfully tough and angular, with little early sweetness. A distinctly muscular wine, best today on the long finish, where the black fruit flavors outlast the serious tannins. I may be underestimating this.

  • Grand-Puy-Lacoste 2000 (12x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (95)

The 2000 Château Grand Puy Lacoste is an exceptional wine from Xavier Borie. It has a brilliant nose of blackberry, crushed stone, graphite and cedar. Putting it to one side for ten to 15 minutes reveals subtle mint-like aromas that whisk you straight to Pauillac. The palate is smooth and silky, cloaking the tannic frame of this GPL so that you barely notice it. But that will stand it in good stead for the long-term, the cornerstone of all great wines from this estate. Then there is that hint of spice on the aftertaste—the show ain't over yet. Served alongside a magnum of Pichon Baron 2000, I would say that at the moment, it does not quite possess the same level of precision. However, it remains a magnificent Pauillac to cherish long-term. Tasted January 2016.

  • Guigal Cote-Rotie La Mouline 2003 (6x75cl)

A desert island wine (as is just about any top vintage of the cuvee) and a gorgeous showing, the 2003 Cote Rotie la Mouline is drinking beautifully, yet is still young, loaded with fruit, and possesses over-the-top richness. Giving up notions of plum, liquid flowers, potpourri and smoked meats, this puppy is full-bodied, massive and layered on the palate, with a stacked mid-palate, thrilling amounts of texture, and a blockbuster-styled finish. • Haut-Brion 2000 (12x75cl)

    Decanter (100)

Is this as good as the 1989? Certainly it is lush and powerful, lingering and expanding in the mouth with sweet tobacco and cigar box notes, along with still young blackcurrant and blackberry fruits, all given lift by the trademark Haut-Brion aromatics. It beds in and shakes off early reticence after a good hour in the glass, suggesting that this is only just leaving its primary phase and has many decades left ahead of it. A great wine that highlights the success of Haut-Brion under the partnership of estate director Jean-Bernard Delmas, father of current director Jean-Philippe Delmas, and owner Joan Dillon the Duchess of Mouchy (president of the company until 2008 before handing over to her son Prince Robert of Luxembourg). A supremely confident wine that is hard to fault in its depth of expression.

    Wine Advocate (100)

A desert island wine (as is just about any top vintage of the cuvee) and a gorgeous showing, the 2003 Cote Rotie la Mouline is drinking beautifully, yet is still young, loaded with fruit, and possesses over-the-top richness. Giving up notions of plum, liquid flowers, potpourri and smoked meats, this puppy is full-bodied, massive and layered on the palate, with a stacked mid-palate, thrilling amounts of texture, and a blockbuster-styled finish. There’s nothing classic about it, but it’s still as good as it gets.

  • Guigal Cote-Rotie La Turque 2003 (12x75cl)

I’ve always loved the 2003s from the Guigal family and the 2003 Cote Rotie la Turque has yet to ever disappoint. An incredible perfume of smoked herbs, charred meats, violets, licorice and blackcurrants gives way to a huge, unctuous, powerful Cote Rotie that has masses of ripe, sweet tannin, full-bodied richness and a finish that just won’t quit. Enjoy this heavenly elixir over the coming 2-3 decades.

  • Haegelen Jayer Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2000 (6x75cl)

Experience the richness of the Haegelen Jayer Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2000. Crafted in the revered vineyards of the Clos de Vougeot appellation in Burgundy, this full-bodied red wine exemplifies the artistry of esteemed winemaker Haegelen Jayer. Each year, Haegelen Jayer meticulously selects the highest quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes from their mature, low-yielding vines. The signature approach involves traditional vinification methods, heightening the wine's natural complexities. In the case of the 2000 vintage, slow fermentation and extended maturation in French oak barrels delivered a balanced and deeply nuanced bouquet. On the palate, this Grand Cru blends seductive red fruit and floral notes with hints of toasted spice and underbrush. This wine, mahogany-hued and lingering, exhibits the hallmarks of ageing potential, promising to develop even more profound layers of flavour. Savour the Haegelen Jayer Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2000 - a true testimony of French winemaking prowess.

  • Haut-Bailly 2000 (1x600cl)

    Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91)

(roughly a 50/50 blend of merlot and cabernet sauvignon) Good bright ruby-red. Deep, smoky aromas of plum syrup, raspberry, tobacco, iron and roasted nuts. Lush, silky and sweet, with insidious vinosity keeping the lush plum and tobacco flavors fresh and delineated. The suave merlot tannins spread out to cover the entire palate. Much more a merlot-dominated wine than the 2001, which is 65% cabernet sauvignon.
