  • Comte Georges de Vogue Musigny Grand Cru VV 2003 (3x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (98)

Unquestionably one of the glories of the vintage, the 2003 Musigny Vieilles Vignes brings forth a highly boisterous nose of spices, violets, roses, plums, blueberries, and black cherries. Deep, powerful, graceful, concentrated, and sensually textured, it slathers the mouth with plums, blueberries, and cherries. Notes of mocha are intermingled with licorice in its exquisitely long finish. This noble wine is crammed with tannin, yet it is sweet and ripe. Projected maturity: 2010-2025+.

  • Comte Georges de Vogue Musigny Grand Cru VV 2010 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (97+)

(bottled in March of 2012; this and the Bonnes-Mares were aged in 35% new oak): Deep, bright red-ruby. Brilliantly pure aromas of black raspberry, cherry and crushed limestone. Sharply chiseled, sappy and weightless in the mouth, with uncanny limestone cut to the flavors of raspberry, flowers and wild herbs. Spreads out insidiously to saturate and perfume the palate. Judging from this wine's tactile, bracing finish, endless perfume and firm tannic spine, it should gain in nuance for two or three decades in a cool cellar.

  • Comte Georges de Vogue Musigny Grand Cru VV 2014 (3x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

The 2014 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru has a very intense, cold stone and blackberry scented bouquet, moving towards subtle marine like aromas (oyster shells, Crustacea) with time. There is just wonderful precision here. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip in the mouth, firm backbone, a slightly more masculine Musigny with just a hint of savoriness towards the long finish. This is showing great personality even at this early juncture, although of course, it will not even consider reaching its drinking plateau without 8-10 years in bottle. I suspect this Musigny will only gradually open. Tasted November 2016.

Their biggest holding. Oldest vines planted in 1953 and still in good shape. And all more than 25 years old. Deep crimson. The sort of freshness that I associate with stems even though this is fully destemmed. Cedary, cool, dark fruit, intense and just a touch dusty/stony/mineral. Perfectly matched on the palate with that rocky dark-fruit purity, dry yet succulent, and fragrant. Deep and contemplative and so much more to come. Refined texture.

    Vinous (97-99)

The 2018 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru is even darker than the Bonnes-Mares. It has a spectacular bouquet of intense black fruit, blueberries and shucked oyster shells, the mineralité heightened over the Bonnes-Mares and lending a great deal of precision. The palate is medium-bodied with blueberry, boysenberry and black currant fruit, extraordinary tension, razor-sharp acidity and a dash of white pepper on the crystalline finish. One of the finest Musignys I have tasted from barrel at de Vogüé.

    Burghound (95-98)

(from an incredible 6.46 ha parcel, which doesn’t include the .67 ha section planted to chardonnay). This too is quite aromatically restrained though aggressive swirling does eventually coax the pure and elegant aromas to emerge and when they do, they are almost a hypothetical blend of the Amoureuses and the Bonnes Mares. The concentrated, powerful and decidedly muscular flavors retain plenty of refinement and minerality that conclude in a wonderfully complex and superbly long finale. The mid-palate texture is akin to rolling rocks around in the mouth and the finish just goes on and on. This too is brilliant, and the word Zen definitely comes to mind. (95-98)/2041+

(from an incredible 6.46 ha parcel, which doesn’t include the .67 ha section planted to chardonnay). As is often the case, this is aromatically similar to the Chambolle 1er but it’s less expressive and perhaps more densely fruited. There is notably better mid-palate concentration to the substantially sized big-bodied flavors that also possess a positively gorgeous mouthfeel while exuding an abundance of mineral character on the hugely long and impeccably well-balanced and youthfully austere finale. This Zen-like effort is superb and a wine that should also age gracefully over the next two decades. (95-98)/2040+

The 2021 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru underwent a picked piecemeal from the 30 different plots to find the best order that actually was linked to vine age. It has a gorgeous bouquet with brambly red fruit, loam, blood oranges and subtle graphite aromas. Superb delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, fresh citrus like acidity, tensile and focused. This is a very classic, mineral-driven Musigny with surfeit of salinity that gets the saliva flowing on the finish. So bright on the finish.

Echézeaux often yields relatively accessible Burgundies, but not here. Liger-Belair's 2013 is a big, big wine that is also going to require considerable cellaring. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple opening, plenty of fresh red berry fruit laced with blood orange and a very lively, vivacious finish that belies the three times this vineyard was hailed upon. Superb.

  • Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Aux Reignots 2018 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (95)

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots 1er Cru has another rather reduced bouquet, but there is plenty of red fruit here, touches of blood orange and hints of violet and after 20 minutes there is a palpable sense of exuberance. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, quite fleshy with fine grip and backbone. Fresh and delineated on the finish, this is a lovely Vosne-Romanée that should age well in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

  • Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanee Clos du Chateau 2018 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (90-92)

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Clos du Château feels a little smudged by comparison to the La Colombière, offering scents of dark berry fruit plus wilted iris flowers and incense. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, plenty of rich blueberry and black fruit and fine salinity toward the finish. This exhibits excellent length but it will require 2–4 years in bottle.

  • Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanee La Colombiere 2018 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (89-91)

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée La Colombière shakes off a little reduction to reveal slightly earthy red berry fruit laced with clove and bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with chalky tannins and a fine line of acidity. Quite saline in the mouth, with a taut, linear finish. Good potential for one of the domaine's entry-level cuvées.

  • Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Charmes 2011 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (93+)

(bottled the day before my visit; aged in 40% new oak): Complex, vibrant aromas of peach, orange zest and lemon accented by white pepper. Rich, ripe, tactile and sweet, with the intense citrus and stone fruit flavors accented by peppery spices and complicated by vanilla and leesy nuances. A very good showing today, but this is still a baby.

  • Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Goutte d'Or 2017 (3x75cl)

    Burghound (91-94)

Sweet Spot Outstanding. Hints of spice and petrol add breadth to the ripe and mildly exotic aromas of white peach, mandarin orange and discreet wood influence. The bigger and richer medium weight plus flavors possess excellent mid-palate density while displaying excellent depth and drive on the focused and powerful finish. Impressive.

The 2020 Meursault Goutte d'Or 1er Cru has a lovely bouquet with fine delineation, orange pith and apricot, hazelnut with a touch of flint. • Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Perrieres 2007 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (94-95)

(a tank sample, fined ten days ago) Knockout nose combines musky citrus peel, white flowers and grilled nuts. Offers bracing lemon, lime and stone flavors of outstanding purity, with strong minerality giving the wine uncanny energy and cut. The sugar/acid balance here is exhilarating, and the wine's resounding finish offers an almost magically light touch. This should age very slowly.

  • Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Perrieres 2020 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2020 Meursault Les Perrières 1er Cru has quite a rich bouquet with tropical tones, maybe to the detriment of the mineralité that is slightly masked at the moment. The palate is very well balanced with a fine line of acidity, quite saline, lightly spiced with a vibrant finish that finally delivers the spiciness. Maybe pipped by the Les Charmes this year, this is a classy but not peak Perrières. Bottled under Diam 30. Closure: Diam 30

The 2020 Meursault Clos-de-la-Barre has a clean, quite precise bouquet that is a step up from the Village, traces of grilled almond and hazelnut. The palate is underpinned by a fine line of acidity, more mineralité and tension with a saline, slightly Puligny-like finish. One of those less-is-more Meursaults. Bottled under Diam 30. • Confuron-Cotetidot Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2009 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (89-92)

(14.4% alcohol, with a pH of 3.9) Ruby-red. Very southern aromas of chocolate liqueur and garrigue: this could be Chateauneuf. Lush, sweet and hugely rich, with powerful, roasted dark fruit and smoke flavors. Finishes with substantial but very ripe tannins. A rather extreme and outsized wine: I never would have picked it as Gevrey-Chambertin, much less Charmes.

  • Coquard Loison-Fleurot Clos-Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2020 (3x75cl)

    Burghound (93-96)

Very ripe yet fresh aromas are comprised by notes of cassis black cherry liqueur and a lovely range of spice elements. There is excellent richness to the opulent and seductively textured medium-bodied flavors that possess a caressing mouthfeel thanks to the abundance of dry extract that buffers the very firm but well-integrated tannins on the hugely long finish. This is finer than the Clos de la Roche but not as complex though that of course is likely to change with time in bottle.
