  • Brovia Barolo 2013 (6x75cl)

    Wine Enthusiast (94)

Given the poise and complexity, it's hard to believe this is the firm's entry-level Barolo. It opens with alluring aromas of wild berry, forest floor, new leather, menthol and purple flower while the full-bodied palate delivers crushed raspberry, morello cherry, mint and star anise. Firm refined tannins and bright acidity give it a structured finesse as well as balance.

  • Brovia Barolo Rocche di Castiglione 2013 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (97)

A real heat-turner, the 2013 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is powerful and surprisingly dense and rich. Sweet floral notes meld into a core of succulent red-fleshed fruit. This is a surprisingly ample, richly textured Rocche with huge density, creaminess and body, all qualities that are not often seen in Barolos from this site. There is a hint of Rocche sensuality in the glass, but the 2013 is holding quite a bit back in reserve. Sweet red cherry, pomegranate, mint, wild flowers and blood orange give the wine its distinctive signatures. Today, the 2013 impresses for its mid-palate depth, aromatic intensity and racy personality. Quite uncharacteristically, the Rocche is the least expressive of the single vineyard Barolos today.

  • Bruno Paillard Blanc de Blancs Brut Millesime 2013 (3x150cl)
  • Bryant Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (96)

Bright medium ruby. Heady scents of blueberry, blackberry, licorice and graphite minerality are complemented by coffee and briney olive notes. Much less unctuous on the palate than the nose suggests; not austere but juicy, backward and firmly built. The wine's concentrated black fruit flavors are given sex appeal by graphite minerality and an element of sweet oak, with integrated acidity providing terrific definition and energy. This wonderfully suave, fine-grained wine possesses a serious tannic structure for a long and graceful evolution in bottle. I suspect it will be longer-lived than the 2012. Winemaker Marc Gagnon noted that 2013 was an ideal vintage that featured an early set and an early harvest, with no extremes.

The 2013 Barolo Acclivi is another knockout from Burlotto. The Acclivi shows slightly red and purplish hued fruits, with lavender, mint, violet and spice that develop in the glass. The 2013 is naturally very tightly wound, but it offers superb freshness, along with a striking interplay of pliant fruit, lifted, floral-infused aromatics, and an acid/tannin profile that adds brightness throughout. Readers will have to be patient, but there is no rush. This is a fabulous Barolo in the making.

In 2013, the Monvigliero has gotten most of the attention, and for good reason. It is a truly monumental wine. But the Cannubi is not that far behind. • Cappellano Barolo Otin Fiorin Pie Rupestris 2013 (1x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (94+)

Although this wine does not follow the logic of the MGA (or official map of vineyard crus) for Barolo, fruit is sourced exclusively from the Gabutti vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba. The 2013 Barolo Otin Fiorin Piè Rupestris is a magically ethereal, light and delicate expression that delivers a silky embroidery of wild raspberry, rose, dried violet and crushed stone aromas. The wine shows an incredibly fine and nuanced texture that lacks any overt sense of power or muscle but that instead imparts impressive length, depth and general dimension. The wine shows the richness of Serralunga d'Alba but remains light-footed and delicately fleeting all the while.

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is simply stunning. A real head-turner, the 2013 possesses superb density and tons of pure power. The flavors are deep, powerful and explosive. Mocha, new leather, and licorice wrap around a core of dark, sumptuous fruit. This dense, powerful Cabernet Sauvignon will require considerable patience, but it is super-impressive. And then some. Luminous deep red. Captivating aromas of sweet red berries, cinnamon, violet and licorice. Then also very fruity in the mouth; refined, juicy red plum and raspberry flavors linger brightly on the fresh back end. Has a delightful red fruit cocktail quality that makes it practically impossible to put the glass back down. • Cascina Fontana Barolo 2013 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (91)

Mario Fontana's 2013 Barolo is quite a bit more imposing than the Castiglione Falletto bottling. Dark cherry, plum, smoke, licorice, menthol and melted road tar fill out the wine's super-classic, mid-weight frame. The 2013 has more fruit and better balance, along with less austerity, than most other recent vintages have shown. And that, is of course, great news. Powerful, deep and muscular, the 2013 Barolo is a super-classic, old-school Barolo loaded with personality. The 2013 is a blend of fruit from Villero, Mariondino (both in Castiglione Falletto) and Giachini (in La Morra).

  • Castellare I Sodi Di San Niccolo 2013 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

The 2013 I Sodi di S. Niccolò is 85% Sangioveto (a more antique name for Sangiovese) and 15% Malvasia Nera from a single vineyard. This wine opens to a darkly saturated appearance and shows ruby, garnet and purple highlights. The bouquet is powerful but seamless at the same time with smooth transitions between dark cherry, spice, tobacco and moist clay. In the mouth, this wine shows dense extraction, but it never feels too weighed down by that mass. Instead, the freshness of the fruit and the natural acidity give the wine a bright and buoyant personality. Aged in barrique for 30 months, this is a delightful Tuscan red.

Blackberry jam, crème de cassis, plum, licorice and spice meld together in the glass, but it is the wine's textural intensity that elevates it into the realm of the profound. • Catena Zapata Nicasia Malbec 2013 (1x150cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

The 2013 Malbec Catena Zapata Nicasia Vineyard is produced with grapes from the vineyard that names it--a vineyard planted in 1997 in the Altamira zone of Valle de Uco. It's mostly Malbec with some 4% Cabernet Franc, but the two grapes fermented together. It has less Cabernet Franc than other years because 2013 was fresh enough that just that pinch provided enough of the character they are looking for. They call this the most Malbec of our Malbecs and it has the textbook aromas of violets and red berries with perfectly integrated oak. The palate is also elegant and fresh and showcases the telltale round tannins of Malbec. This is truly outstanding. Some 8,000 bottles were filled in December 2015.

  • Castello dei Rampolla d'Alceo 2013 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (100)

Readers should do whatever they can to get their hands on a few bottles of the 2013 d'Alceo. Seamless and voluptuous in the glass, it is an epic wine that embodies all the qualities that make these terraced vineyards in Panzano so special. Blackberry jam, crème de cassis, plum, licorice and spice meld together in the glass, but it is the wine's textural intensity that elevates it into the realm of the profound. The 2013 has been nothing short of moving on the two occasions I tasted it recently.

  • Castello dei Rampolla Sammarco 2013 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (98)

The 2013 Sammarco is a stunning wine. Super-expressive aromatics make a strong opening statement in a wine endowed with myriad dimensions of nuance and complexity. The 2013 is deep and fleshy, with generous fruit, beautifully integrated tannins and exceptional finesse. Readers should not plan on opening a bottle of this any time soon, though, as it seems likely to age at a glacial pace.

  • Catena Zapata Adrianna Mundus Bacillus Terrae Malbec 2013 (3x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (97)

There are three separate bottling from the Adrianna vineyard, one of them the 2013 Adrianna Vineyard Mundus Bacillus Terrae, from the shallow and limestone soils with a south-facing, cold exposure, that was coupled by a cool year. This has higher acidity and citric, effervescent acidity combined with chalky tannins providing length and freshness. This is terrific. 2,000 bottles were filled in December 2015.

  • Catena Zapata Adrianna Vineyard Fortuna Terrae Malbec 2013 (3x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (96)

There are three separate bottling from the Adrianna vineyard, one of them the 2013 Adrianna Vineyard Fortuna Terrae, sourced from the part of the vineyard with slightly deeper soils (we're talking only about 70 centimeters here!) that has limestone underneath, is flatter and provides very aromatic, slightly lighter wines, more feminine if you like. It's very floral, gentle, with fine tannins with a good structure based on a combination with superb acidity. This is also lighter colored, the more Pinot of the three. Some 3,000 bottles were filled in December 2015.

  • Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino 2013 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (95)

They blend two plots from two of their flagship vineyards, Adrianna in Gualtallary and Nicasia in Altamira to create the 2013 Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino. It is a classical Malbec with some creamy, smoky notes, juicy, polished and fresh but with enough power to stand up to food. Some 11,000 were bottles produced.
