Wine Advocate (95)
This estate, which has continued to impress me in recent years, hit a home run in 2000. Showing slightly better than I rated it previously, this wine is deep bluish/purple with some lightening at the edge, and its floral nose displays notes of melted licorice, crushed rock, blueberries and black raspberries. A wine of extraordinary balance, equilibrium, and purity, with supple tannins, this medium to full-bodied, concentrated effort is already compelling and has hit its window of full maturity, where it should stay for another 15-20 years.Inc. Vinous (91)
(the aging begins in barriques and finishes in Slavonian ovals) Medium red. Captivating, highly perfumed aromas of cherry, raspberry and rose petal. Silky, stylish and sweet, with the wine's pliant fleshiness nicely framed by perfectly integrated acidity. Offers a lovely floral perfume throughout. Finishes juicy and very long, with fine tannins. Clearly the best of the 2000 trio.Inc. VAT£1,495.00 -

Vinous (91+)
Very dark red. Brooding, slightly reduced aromas of black raspberry, menthol, mint, licorice and leather, plus a distinct impression of liqueur-like dried fruits. Thick, tactile and dry; this very powerful Volnay shows as much soil as fruit today. Strong tannins saturate the sides of the mouth and tongue, mostly neutralizing the wine's sweetness. A large-scaled and extreme style but boasts good freshness. This big boy still needs more time in bottle to soften. I suspect that it will go on for another couple of decades. In response to the extreme heat that summer and the very early harvest at the end of August, Renaud de Villette carried out a shorter-then-normal cuvaison, followed by a relatively short élevage with less new oak than usual. (this cuvee had been racked a week prior to my visit) Deep ruby-red. Complex aromas of blackberry, minerals, cracked pepper, roasted herbs, spices, tar and bitter chocolate. Superripe yet cool, with exotic berry and menthol flavors that are currently a bit disassociated. Comes across as quite structured, but I suspect it has been hardened by the recent sulfuring. But this boasts very good flavor intensity, firm tannins and excellent length.Inc. VAT£2,253.89 -

A prodigious beast of a wine that's now starting to shed just a touch of its considerable baby fat, the 2003 Château Montrose is based on 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot. It shows the richness of the vintage with its ripe, opulent core of fruit, yet it freshens up noticeably with time in the glass, offering currants, mulberries, smoked tobacco, minty herbs, and licorice. Full-bodied, deep, and powerful on the palate, it still has classic Bordeaux focus and structure. It's drinking brilliantly today with a decant and has another 20-30 years of prime drinking.Inc. Deep garnet colored with a touch of brick, the 2000 Mouton Rothschild (composed of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon and 14% Merlot) boldly bursts from the glass with tantalizing Black Forest cake, dried mulberries, kirsch and blackcurrant pastilles notes plus wafts of iodine, incense, potpourri and cinnamon stick with a hint of cigar boxes. Medium to full-bodied, the palate packs in the muscular fruit, framed by firm, ripe, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with phenomenal length. This is an incredibly complex and multifaceted wine, and it's drinking deliciously now. This said, I can’t help but feel that it is holding something back, that it still has another layer of opulence and seduction to reveal in its tight-knit fruit and solid structure. I personally can’t wait to see how this beauty will continue to unfold over the years to come.Inc. VAT£24,152.47 -
