Wine Advocate (96)
The 2003 Madrona Ranch, which is largely Cabernet Sauvignon, possesses a freshness that almost belies the vintage character. Its dense purple color is just beginning to reveal some garnet. The nose exhibits abundant floral notes intermixed with notions of blueberries, black raspberries and licorice-infused cassis. Graceful, elegant, and close to full maturity, it is drinking beautifully, displaying secondary nuances, a supple, full-bodied texture and a lush, layered mouthfeel. There is not a bit of aggressiveness, and the tannins, wood and alcohol (14.5%) are all beautifully integrated. As one might expect, this is one of the vintage’s superstars. Drink it over the next 10-15 years.Inc. VAT£1,194.02 -

This is super for a second wine. Fantastic aromas of chocolate, berry and coffee. Yet very classy and subtle. Full-bodied, with a reserved rich and caressing texture. Loads of ripe and wonderful fruit in this. Second wine of Château Palmer.Inc. VAT£1,962.07 -
Wine Advocate (99)
Approaching perfection, this wine is inky, bluish/purple-colored to the rim, offering up notes of incense, blueberry and blackberry liqueur, licorice, graphite and spring flowers. A touch of roasted espresso bean is also present. The wine has great concentration, a magnificent, full-bodied mouthfeel, stunning purity, and well-integrated acidity, tannin, alcohol and wood. This beauty seems to be in mid-adolescence with at least 25-30 years of life ahead.Inc. VAT£3,751.24 -

Wine Advocate (98)
I had this wine from my cellar, as well as at a tasting in Zurich in February of 2015. It is one of the handful of 2003s I bought from the Right Bank of Bordeaux in this vintage. Angelus really nailed the vintage, and has produced a fully mature wine that’s truly strutting its stuff. Dense, bluish/purple, it offers gorgeous notes of espresso roast, blackberry and blueberry liqueur, acacia flowers and a touch of chocolate. It is full-bodied, opulent and seems close to full maturity, as it is evolving quickly. The wine is full-bodied, rich and should be drunk over the next decade.Inc. VAT£4,628.40 -
Vinous (95)
The 2000 Chambertin Grand Cru is youthful in appearance with just very slight bricking. The bouquet is well-defined with quite precocious red fruit laced with orange blossom and crushed stone, yet it does not possess the complexity of the preceding vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannins, perfectly judged acidity, velvety, so much so that this is the one vintage that is quite Vosne-like in style. Coheres beautifully on the finish. No, not a top-ranking Chambertin from Rousseau, but so delicious. Tasted at the Rousseau Chambertin vertical at La Vienne.Inc. VAT£64,836.07 -

Rousseau's 2002 Chambertin is in the zone. Succulent, racy and open, the 2002 is ready to deliver pleasure. The purity of the fruit alone is striking. Even so, the 2002 is still very much at the early part of its first plateau of maturity, as the flavors remain very bright and fresh. In this vertical, the 2002 comes across as a wine of immediacy, with a bit less structure and overall energy than the very best vintages. I say that with some hesitation, as the 2002 is exceptional. It is just a little less exceptional than a few of the other wines in this vertical.Inc. VAT£4,258.40 -
Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92-95)
Medium red. Precise, scented nose combines red cherry, minerals, stones, iron and rose petal. Penetrating, minerally and precise, with vibrant flavors of red cherry and raspberry. Conveys a real small-berry depth and intensity of flavor and offers great energy and verve. Not at all a fat style of 2003-or of Chambertin. Especially strong on the back half, finishing with terrific thrust and length.Inc. VAT£77,988.07 -

Deep, saturated red with ruby highlights. Pure, captivating aromas of blackberry, blueberry and spicy oak. Sappy and uncommonly sweet but not at all thick or heavy. Still a bit closed in the mouth but already shows compelling perfume. There's no sign of the 13.7% (natural) alcohol. Distinctly tighter and more powerful than the Clos Saint-Jacques. Finishes with superb lingering perfume. A great showing.Inc. VAT£4,372.40 -

Rousseau's 2000 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is quite successful in this vintage, and it's certainly still full of life, opening in the glass with a pretty bouquet of red cherry, strawberry, subtle mint, mustard seed and potpourri. On the palate, the wine is supple, polished and velvety, with decent concentration and depth, and suggestions of baked fruit on the palate. The Clos de la Roche is never Rousseau's most compelling grand cru, but it would be churlish to deny that this is excellent.Inc. VAT£1,112.40 -
Vinous (89-92)
Good full red. Complex aromas of black raspberry, espresso, mocha and underbrush. Dense, thick and concentrated; a step up in size from the foregoing wines. And yet this big boy shows a lovely restrained sweetness and comes across as round and not especially tannic. Long and lush on the aftertaste.Inc. VAT£1,447.45 -

A last minute addition, Rousseau's 2002 Clos St. Jacques nearly stole the show (actually it did!), proving why it is revered among Burgundy lovers. Arguably one of the youngest and most vibrant wines of the evening, the Clos St. Jacques impressed for its intense fruit and phenomenal balance. It was the perfect ending to a fabulous night of food, wine and conversation.Inc. VAT£8,048.81 -

The 2000 Montefalco 25 Anni simply multiplies all the elements exponentially with room-filling aromas of sweet berry fruit and perfectly integrated oak and a mouth-coating cascade of ripe fruit, powerful, dense, and sensual tannins in a swelling flow of unrelieved pleasure. This terrific winery’s 2003 Vinas de Gain is a 100% old vine Tempranillo from their high altitude vineyard sites in Rioja Alavesa. A superb entry level effort, it reminded me of the famed Pomerol, l’Evangile. Wonderful scents of black raspberries, sweet cherries, smoke, truffles, and earth soar from the glass of this dense ruby/purple-hued 2003. Ripe and elegant, with beautiful purity, superb intensity, and a long, smooth finish, it is a glorious Rioja to enjoy over the next 5-7 years.Inc. VAT£433.27 -

Amazing! The limestone soils of Ausone appear to have been the perfect foil for resisting the extreme heat and drought of June, July and August, 2003. This black/purple-colored effort boasts a glorious nose of violets, truffles, lead pencil shavings, blueberry and blackberry liqueur. Full-bodied with staggering concentration, a voluptuous texture, low acidity and well-integrated, melted tannins, this deep, multidimensional, profound Bordeaux is beginning to drink exceptionally well. It should continue to do so for another two decades or more.Inc. VAT£11,160.07 -
