Red-ruby. Raspberry, dark chocolate and minerals, with a slightly grilled quality; like a more intense, urgent version of the Genaivrieres. Very ripe but closed in the mouth, with a superb sappy sweetness and a hint of marzipan. Offers impressive fat and texture, with harmonious framing acidity. Finishes very long, with firm but suave tannins and lingering notes of spices and minerals.

Vinous - Ian D'Agata (92)

(34% cabernet sauvignon, 33% merlot and 33% cabernet franc; 30.1 g/l dry extract; 13.2% alcohol): Dark red with a garnet rim. Very sexy, inviting aromas of ripe red cherry, rose petal, mint, cinnamon and white pepper; this has to be one of the freshest, least overripe noses of all 2003 Bordeaux. Then remarkably vibrant and pure on the palate, with cabernet franc-dominated flavors of strawberry, violet, and cocoa complicated by a delicate white pepper nuance. The tannins are smooth and the finish long and suave. An alluring, supple wine with impeccable balance--and an unbelievable result in the furnace-like conditions of 2003.

There was one more Burgundy on our agenda, a 2003 Rouget Vosne Romanee Cros Parantoux. Very deep red, by far the darkest in the tasting; showing no amber yet. Bordeaux-like nose combines redcurrant, black raspberry, graphite, mocha, cedar, licorice, mint and bouquet garni; it's hard to recognize Burgundy here (Jérôme Flous noted that we feared that 2018 would be like 2003 but we were saved by having a lot of moisture in the soil). A medicinal, mouthfilling monster with its black fruit and menthol flavors conveying a distinctly southern dried-fruit and Provençal herb character. Today the finish is cut off by palate-shattering tannins. Erwan Faiveley describes this as one of the biggest Burgundies I've ever tasted, noting that its IPT (indice de polyphénols totaux) is 130, which is off the charts. And I recall that when François Faiveley first showed me this wine from barrel in late 2004 (he bottled it early, in December of that year), he predicted that it would need at least 15 years of bottle aging; that has turned out to be an understatement. In fact, I wonder if this bulletproof wine will ever truly be easy to drink. I'm not sure if I would have pegged it blind as Pinot Noir. (This wine weighs in at 14.4% alcohol, while the rest of the vintages in this tasting are typically between 13.2% and 13.7%; 3.57 pH; 3.5 g/l acidity; from a harvest that began on August 25; just 18 hectoliters per hectare produced)

One of the many very successful 100% merlot wines made in Italy today, this wine created an unbelievable stink a few years ago when it won a major award, and then someone pointed out that it couldn't legally have been made in that part of Campania as merlot wasn't an allowed grape variety there. All the controversy has since cleared up, leaving us with a monumental merlot that is held in high esteem everywhere. Almost black in color. Redolent of licorice, coffee liqueur, dark chocolate, overripe plum and red and bing cherry jam. Supple and silky enough to be enjoyable already; shows dark chocolate and roasted coffee bean notes as well as an attractive smokiness. Finishes extremely long, with massive tannins. A bit more finesse would only add to the pleasure of the experience.

The 2003 is a fascinating Serpico. The wine boasts impressive concentration in its dark, rich fruit. This is an incredibly primary Serpico, with little in the way of tertiary development. Ideally, it is best left alone for another few years, but readers fortunate enough to own this are in for a thrilling ride once the wine opens up a bit. Today it remains tightly coiled but full of potential. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023.

Vinous (90)

Wine Advocate (92+)

The 2003 is a fascinating Serpico. The wine boasts impressive concentration in its dark, rich fruit. This is an incredibly primary Serpico, with little in the way of tertiary development. Ideally, it is best left alone for another few years, but readers fortunate enough to own this are in for a thrilling ride once the wine opens up a bit. Today it remains tightly coiled but full of potential. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023.

James Suckling (94)

This is amazing for the vintage. Full and silky, with velvety tannins. Long and rich, with a bright fruit character -- think black figs. The Cabernet Sauvignon gets to 35% of the blend in this vintage. This is delicious now, but it will be much better in five years. Pull the cork in 2015.

Vinous (87)

Good full red-ruby. High-toned aromas of raspberry, leather and spice. Silky and aromatic in the mouth, with bright fruit and subtle hints of leather and minerals. Slightly dry but persistent and aromatic on the end.
