Bordeaux 2021 En Primeur - a "New Classicism"?

After a trio of excellent warm, dry vintages in Bordeaux, where most producers and appellations did very well across the board, 2021 was less straightforward for the vignerons of the world’s most famous wine region. Pressures from frost and mildew were the complications that tested some Chateaux’s resolve but nevertheless, the 2021 growing season has created what Decanter’s Georgie Hindle believes to be ‘one of the most interesting and talked about vintages of recent times.’

Generalising is a difficult thing to do in 2021 Bordeaux but if we were forced, we’d say that the vintage has yielded elegant & classically proportioned wines. Many have moderate alcohol levels, think 12-13.5 % rather than the loft heights of 14.5-15%, whilst they also have more supple, charming profiles more in line with the great Bordeaux wines of the 80s and 90s than the recent blockbuster vintages of 2018, 2019 and 2020. It is in vintages like 2021 where we really appreciate the pedigree and winemaking knowledge of the very best properties within this majestic region– with all the modern science, technology and investment now behind these great estates, it is hard for them to make anything other than beautiful wine.

Don't miss the whites of 2021 as they have been universally praised and were a joy to taste. The cool conditions of 2021 have certainly created the ‘finest set of dry whites since 2017’ that ‘exhibit considerable potential’ (WA).

Antonio Galloni - Vinous (93-96)

The 2021 Brane-Cantenac notably marries fruit intensity with energy and structure. There is an exotic richness to the 2021 that is impossible to miss. Kirsch, red plum, blood orange, cinnamon, new leather and spice all meld together. The 2021 is bold, sumptuous and alluring. There is certainly a lot to look forward to. The oak needs to fully integrate, but that is what élevage is for. Brane-Cantenac was impressive on both occasions I tasted it.

The Drinks Business (93-95)

Cantenac Brown (Margaux; 73% Cabernet Sauvignon; 27% Merlot; aging in oak barrels, 60% of which are new; tasted at the UGCB press tasting). Very classy and elegant on the nose, with a seductive gentle suggestion of oak influence – vanilla and sweet spice, but all very restrained. Graphite, walnut skin and a delightful hint of the cedar to come. Deep rich berry fruit, with pleasing floral elements (more than I recall in recent vintages) – lily and peony. Pure, precise, fresh and focussed with good if not massive concentration and lovely balance and harmony. Excellent wine-making is on display here with a series of pitch perfect choices that reinforce the identity and terroir typicity of this exciting wine.

Dauzac (Margaux; 70% Cabernet Sauvignon; 30% Merlot; 13% alcohol; a final yield of 44 hl/ha; aged predominantly in oak barrels, 65% of which are new, with a small proportion in amphora; tasted at the property and the UGCB press tasting). Complex and enticing on the nose, with plenty of Margaux florality – wisteria, violets and lavender – combined with a distinct saline-ferrous minerality and a rich, deep, dark berry and stone fruit. The palate is limpid and lithe with delicate layering that is not obscured thanks to the judicious restraint in the extraction. There is an impressive natural ripe sweetness to the fruit and a gentle smokiness too. Nicely composed and very promising.

The 2021 Ferrière is marked by a historically high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. That yields a Ferrière with notable strictness and energy. Red/purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal, mint and sweet spice all take shape in the glass. Pretty floral top notes reappear on the finish, adding lift. I especially admire the vibrancy here.

The 2021 Giscours is fabulous. In fact, the 2021 is one of the best Giscours in recent memory. Silky and impeccable in its balance, the 2012 possesses magnificent elegance that brings out its pedigreed personality. Rose petal, lavender, spice, gravel and black cherry all come together, framed by silky tannins that wrap it all up. The 2021 is less aromatic than most recent vintages, but the depth here is considerable, as is the potential. Taste two times.

Kirwan (Margaux; 73% Cabernet Sauvignon; 13% Merlot; 8% Cabernet Franc; 6% Petit Verdot; 13% alcohol; tasted at the UGCB press tasting; Eric Boissenot is the consultant here). Beautiful in the glass, with a very radiant lilac rim. This is pure and lifted and very true to its recent style. It is ultra-fresh but there is no harsh edge to the acidity. Instead, there is great lift and precision to the bright, crunchy cassis, redcurrant and briary bramble fruit. Another Margaux wine in this vintage that is pure and compact, the fruit clinging tightly to the spine. Some will no doubt find this a little slender but I rather like that (and I suspect it’ll put on further flesh during élevage). Laser-sharp in its precision, this is impressively pure and linear. It is so very different to how it used to be, with no hint of the oak. I am a fan.

Labegorce 2021 (6x75cl)

Jeb Dunnuck (92-94)

Château Labegorce has been managed brilliantly by Marjolaine de Coninck since 2009, and she's produced a brilliant-looking 2021. Lots of black raspberry fruits as well as spicy oak, flowers, and dried herbs emerge on the nose, and it's medium-bodied, with terrific overall balance, an up-front, charming mouthfeel, and a great finish. It's beautifully done, and I suspect it's going to drink nicely right out of the gate. The blend is 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, brought up 35% new French oak. The talented Claude Gros also lends his advice here as well.

Lascombes 2021 (6x75cl)

Lascombes (Margaux; 50% Merlot; 45% Cabernet Sauvignon; 5% Petit Verdot; a final yield of 41 hl/ha; 13.5% alcohol; aging for around 18 months in oak, 60% of which is new; tasted at the UGCB press tasting). Ah, yes, Lascombes – it is immediately very familiar. One tunes in first to that signature wisteria and mimosa floral element, dried rose petals and parfumier’s violets too. Then we have the complex and, again, rather distinct fruit profile – black and sour cherries, brambles and mulberries, with a hint of grated dark chocolate (here more a spice that a source of sweetness) and liquorice root (similarly). This is cool and soft on the entry, with very refined tannins, the new wine-making facility seemingly taking this to a new level in terms of finesse. Lovely black cracked peppercorns and Asiatic spices bring further interest and detail. Overall, this is very balanced, harmonious and refined. The oak is less prevalent and the chewy grape-skin finish is long and gracious.

Savory black and salted-olive character with oyster shells and black licorice. Fine, almost powdery yet firm tannins. Medium body. Excellent density and structure for the vintage. Second wine of Palmer. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 32% merlot and 8% petit verdot. From biodynamically grown grapes.

Mid crimson. Rather alluring ripe nose. Very soft and round. Not a long-distance runner but a true Margaux-style wine for early drinking. There’s even a hint of an ethereal quality about this.
