Pomerol

Among the high-achieving communes of Bordeaux, Pomerol is surely the most anarchistic. No classification system save reputation alone serves to differentiate one winery from another and as one grape variety - Merlot - constitutes about 90% of the wine made, there is precious little to establish a quantifiable difference. That said there is no shortage of spectacular wine in this small region, with Petrus and Le Pin leading the way alongside countless others.

Bonalgue 2014 (12x75cl)

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (93)

The 2014 Bonalgue is ripe, racy and voluptuous, all of which make it pretty hard to resist. Dark red cherry, espresso, grilled herbs, French oak and menthol caress the palate. All the elements have come together beautifully in this overt, flamboyant yet midweight Pomerol. Silky tannins add to the wine’s early and medium-term appeal. Another year or two in bottle should help the oak integrate a bit further, but this will always be in a forward, giving style. Tasted two times.

Certan de May de Certan 2016 (3x75cl)

Vinous - Antonio Galloni (95)

The 2016 Certan de May is a powerful, dense wine, just as it was en primeur. A blast of grilled herbs, leather, smoke, tobacco, licorice and dark-fleshed fruits makes a strong opening statement. Potent and strap in feel, Certan de May shows the more virile side of Pomerol. The profile is decidedly sepia-toned. Readers should plan on being patient with the 2016. It is a jewel of a wine that just needs bottle age to be at its best.

Clinet 1996 (12x75cl)

Wine Advocate (88)

The 1996 Clinet, a blend of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, was bottled a few days after Ronan Laborde's father took over the château in March 1999, spending 21 months in new oak barrels and five months in stainless steel. There was some funkiness at first, but it seems to gain a degree of clarity: scents of smudged red fruit, undergrowth, fennel and thyme, fully mature yet somehow speaking more of the winery than the terroir. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a pleasant salinity on the entry, quite structured and not the usual voluptuous Clinet, as you would expect from this vintage. It is linear and perhaps a little broody, a slightly candied finish but rustic compared to other vintages, something that Robert Parker actually suggested might happen in one of his earlier notes. Comparing the two, I actually prefer the 1986 Clinet to the 1996. Tasted September 2016.

Certan de May de Certan 2019 (6x75cl)

Decanter (94)

Ripe nose with some black truffle, dark chocolate and blackcurrant. On the palate this is juicy and succulent, a lighter fresher wine than the two before, cooling mint, minerality, bright strawberry and raspberry leaf. lifted still with concentration and pomerol power but also glossy with some confidence shining through. Nicely integrated tannins and long length.

Clinet 1998 (12x75cl)

Wine Spectator (93)

Big and powerful, with lots of olive, brown sugar and jam. Soft and full, with round tannins. A voluptuous and wild wine. Juicy and exotic. Why wait on this full-throttle red? 100 percent Merlot.¿'88/'98 Bordeaux blind retrospective (2008). Drink now. -JS

Saturated medium ruby. Aromas of blackberry, baking spices, charred meat and spicy oak. Dense, sweet and spicy, with lovely concentrated fresh fruit and a seamless texture. Nicely bright and delineated.
