Vinous - Antonio Galloni (87-89)The 2013 Petit Cheval is supple and easygoing. A wine with plenty of near and medium-term potential, the 2013 graces the palate with dark red cherry, plum, smoke and spices. Overall, the 2013 is a pretty, nicely textured wine, but there are elements of slight forwardness and evolution in the flavors that suggest the wine is best enjoyed upon release. The blend is 79% Merlot and 21% Cabernet Franc. |

Wine Advocate (90-93)Under the impressive Belgian ownership, this property has been on a hot streak for a number of years. The 2013’s final blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot came from only 35% of the harvest, which took place between September 28 and October 18. The wine exhibits a dark plum/ruby/purple color as well as notes of graphite, licorice, blueberries, black raspberries and a hint of barbecue smoke, and a medium-bodied, rich, concentrated mouthfeel and finish. There is no evidence of rot, astringent tannin or excessive acidity. It has turned out to be one of the more successful wines in this vintage. Enjoy it over the next 12-15 years. |

Crushed flowers, raspberries and sweet aromatic spices add nuance on the finish. It will be interesting to see how the 2013 develops over the coming year. Right now there is a battle between the juiciness of the fruit and the slightly drying tannins. The blend is 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Vinous - Neal Martin (90)The 2013 Pichon-Lalande, according to Nicolas Glumineau, was picked 10 days earlier than he wanted because of the risk of rot, therefore 10 hectares of Merlot was picked in a single day, a Sunday to boot. "It saved us," Glumineau tells me. It has a light, fragrant, slightly briny bouquet. Just a little herbaceousness coming through, simple but pleasurable. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, and it has more depth than the nose implies. Hints of dark chocolate and espresso towards the finish with a touch of spiciness, though undeniably monotone compared to recent vintages under Nicolas Glumineau. This is a perfectly respectable Pauillac if you can abide the bitterness on the aftertaste that ebbs away in the glass. Tasted at the "Difficult Vintage" vertical at the château. |

Wine Advocate (94)The 2013 Smith-Haut-Lafitte Blanc offers a payload of grapefruit, guava and melon aromas that are beautifully integrated with the oak. The palate is fresh and vibrant, very harmonious with a hint of sour lemon that complements that subtle tropical tone. It slips down the throat with ease, completing a gorgeous white Bordeaux. If you are intent on buying just one wine in this off-vintage, this is the one I would load up on. |
