The 2017 La Petite Eglise is poweful and rich in the glass. Dark purplish berry fruit, charcoal, licorice, clove and lavender are some of the many nuances that infuse the 2017 with its distinctly somber personality. Unctuous and racy in feel, with superb density, the 2017 is a decidedly extroverted Pomerol. Tasting it from bottle, I have the same impression I did en primeur: it is easily better than many top bottlings.

The 2017 La Prade is rich and powerful, just as it was from barrel. A rush of blackberry jam, gravel, spice, leather and smoke gives the 2017 its somber, virile personality. Potent in both its fruit and tannic structure, the 2017 could use a year or two in bottle to come together, but I imagine it will always remain a bit rustic. There is no shortage of intensity, that much is clear. Yields are down 50% - 7 hectares in production, 4.5 were not frosted, but this is rustic. Tasted three times.

Our exquisite choice of La Raison d'Hetre 2017 emanates from the esteemed vineyards of Bordeaux, France. The skillfully crafted wine is predominantly Merlot accompanied by Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, aged in French oak barrels, subsequently translating to an unmatched depth of flavour; a true testament to the Winemaker's artistry. The producer, Château de Malleret, with decades of viticultural expertise, took advantage of the excellent climatic conditions in 2017 to gift us this remarkable vintage.

La Raison d'Hetre 2017 exudes a rich, velvety palate that is a sensual delight, offering an alluring bouquet of blackberries and truffles. It showcases a pleasing, well-balanced structure with tannins that are both powerful and silky. The finish is long and sophisticated, making this wine a splendid accompaniment to a well-curated cheese board or expertly prepared red meat dishes. Saturated in complexity, with each sip of La Raison d'Hetre 2017, one uncovers layers of taste and aroma inviting prolonged savouring.

The 2017 La Serre is dark, powerful and hearty - all qualities that make it a terrific choice for drinking at the dinner table over the next handful of years. Sweet tobacco, game, licorice, spice and dark-toned fruit add to an impression of virile power. La Serre is a pretty bold, rustic Saint-Émilion, but a little air does wonders to polish some of the rougher edges. Tasted two times.

The 2017 La Tour de Mons is an attractive, perfumed Margaux with lovely red berry fruit and floral aromatics. Pliant and understated, the 2017 will be easy to enjoy upon release. It is perhaps a little light, but quite pretty just the same.

The 2017 La Vieille Cure has a clean and well defined bouquet with blackberry, raspberry and light cedar aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, well integrated oak with a detailed, characterful finish that is very satisfying. This Fronsac has certainly developed nicely since its showing in barrel and comes recommended.

Decanter (93)

This is a lovely St-Estèphe this year, firm and bright with bristling fruit right out of the gate - hugely unusual to see that this year. This is one of my favourites, and is totally charming with its cassis and damson fruit, but it's the juice and friendly tension that sets it apart. Silky and enjoyable. Buy.

Bruno Borie's Merlot-based Saint-Julien Lalande-Borie is plump, juicy and inviting in 2017. Inky dark blue and purplish berry fruit, spice, licorice, menthol and chocolate are all pushed forward in an easygoing, racy Saint-Julien that will drink well right out of the gate. The 2017 spent 12 months in French oak, 40% of which was new. This is very nicely done and delicious.
