A floral component also emerges as the wine sits in the glass. Extremely dense, full-bodied, and built for another twenty years of cellaring, I thought it would be close to full maturity, but it appears to need another 4-5 years of bottle age. Pressing every advantage afforded by the conditions of 2000, Léoville Barton produced an exceptionally long-lived and aristocratic wine, only just beginning to approach its recommended drinking window – this is classical Bordeaux after all! “This is a behemoth” in the words of Parker, who found that even in 2010 with a decade of age the St-Julien was a “broodingly backward” wine which “makes a mockery of many modern-day consumers wanting a wine for immediate gratification”. A further decade on and this Léoville Barton is finally beginning to unfurl its immense majesty to reveal its classic notes of cassis, cedarwood and dark fruits with impeccably constructed tannins. Parker ends his note, accompanied by a score of 95+ points, with the advice that “those who bought it should continue to exercise patience and be proud to own a wonderful classic with five decades of longevity ahead of it”.

Pressing every advantage afforded by the conditions of 2000, Léoville Barton produced an exceptionally long-lived and aristocratic wine, only just beginning to approach its recommended drinking window – this is classical Bordeaux after all! “This is a behemoth” in the words of Parker, who found that even in 2010 with a decade of age the St-Julien was a “broodingly backward” wine which “makes a mockery of many modern-day consumers wanting a wine for immediate gratification”. A further decade on and this Léoville Barton is finally beginning to unfurl its immense majesty to reveal its classic notes of cassis, cedarwood and dark fruits with impeccably constructed tannins. Parker ends his note, accompanied by a score of 95+ points, with the advice that “those who bought it should continue to exercise patience and be proud to own a wonderful classic with five decades of longevity ahead of it”.

Jancis Robinson (18)Dark and shaded ruby. Much more complex nose than any wine so far. But quite developed..? I love the minerality and lusciousness-yet-dryness on the finish. Very solid performance and a lovely wine for an extended period, I would say. Very grown up indeed. |

Showing slightly better than I rated it previously, this wine is deep bluish/purple with some lightening at the edge, and its floral nose displays notes of melted licorice, crushed rock, blueberries and black raspberries. A wine of extraordinary balance, equilibrium, and purity, with supple tannins, this medium to full-bodied, concentrated effort is already compelling and has hit its window of full maturity, where it should stay for another 15-20 years. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92-94)Saturated dark ruby. Superripe, compellingly sweet aromas of blackberry and melting chocolate, with very subtle oakiness. Lush, chewy and rich, with the powerful berry, cherry, mineral and chocolate flavors nicely framed by harmonious acidity. Seems somehow finer than past vintages of this wine, with a particularly aromatic aftertaste. The ripe tannins coat the entire palate. |
