  • Joseph Drouhin Musigny Grand Cru 1985 (1x75cl)

    Vintage Tastings (95)

The 1985 Drouhin Musigny was again a better bottle than the last time I had this wine just three months ago. What's up with Drouhin showing better in Hong Kong? Maybe it likes the humidity here. It was the most open of this flight, in '85 fashion, sweet and gamy and full of Pinot fruit. Caramel kisses and damp earth rounded out its nutty nose. Paul agreed this was a better bottle than the one he had recently as well; in fact, I think it was the same bottle we shared in New York, or same batch. This bottle was in a perfect spot and still ascending.

  • Joseph Drouhin Musigny Grand Cru 1989 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

The 1989 Musigny Grand Cru is comparatively deep in color with thin bricking on the rim. This has a beguiling nose of darker fruit mixed with autumn leaves, black truffle and morels, becoming more and more floral with time. The medium-bodied palate delivers supple tannins; hints of Lapsang Souchong infuse the red and black fruit, cloves and spice toward the finish. Maybe a little foursquare, yet given my indifference to this Burgundy vintage, it shows extremely well. Tasted at the Drouhin Musigny vertical in London.

    Vinous (93)

The 1996 Musigny Grand Cru has an enticing, well-defined bouquet of dark berries, iris flower, dried blood and pine needle scents, opening nicely with aeration. Medium-bodied and, like many 1996s, quite backward and burly in style; a masculine Musigny with traces of freshly rolled tobacco on the finish. Moderate length. This has clearly got legs, though where is it going to go? Tasted at the Drouhin Musigny vertical in London.

(Don't Miss!) An exotic and spicy nose features raspberry, red current, anise and clove notes that give way to sweet, classy and notably finely detailed flavors that are also relatively forward early but tighten up considerably on the backend. In most vintages, this is the undisputed class of the cellar and while it may ultimately be so once again, in 2004 it has competition. Still, lovely stuff by any standard.

Good deep red. Captivating aromas of blueberry, violet, coffee bean, white pepper and crushed stone. Juicy on entry, then tight and imploded in the middle, with an energetic core of fruit currently dominated by the wine's structure. Most impressive today on the rising, expanding back end, which saturates the mouth with dusty minerality. This will need eight to ten years of cellaring.

The 2017 Musigny Grand Cru unfurls in the glass with captivating aromas of dried flowers, rose petal, violets and raspberries that mingle with deeper bass notes of espresso roast and raw cocoa. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, satiny and extremely elegant, with terrific depth, concentration and amplitude, framed by rich but powdery tannins and concluding with a beautifully fragrant finish. Unsurprisingly, this is likely the red wine of the vintage chez Drouhin.

  • Louis Jadot Musigny Grand Cru 2002 (1x300cl)

A dazzlingly complex and pure nose reveals an incredible breadth of spice-box and dark fruit aromas that are displaying only a whisper of secondary development along with just enough wood to comment on. The ripe and seductive yet incredibly intense medium-bodied flavors display marvelous depth and perfect balance on the sappy, sweet, powerful and hugely long finish that is beautifully detailed and focused. This beauty is a model of grace and understatement and while it could be drunk now with pleasure I would advise waiting as it seems quite clear that there is still plenty of unrealized development potential. (tasted from barrel; 100% vendange entier; from 50-year-old vines): Deep red with ruby tones. Knockout nose offers kaleidoscopic scents of raspberry, blood orange, crushed rock and pepper complicated by torrefaction notes of cocoa and mocha and lifted by lilac and rose petal. Incredibly silky on entry, then expands and builds in the middle palate, with an element of noble vegetility adding another dimension to the flavors of fruits, flowers and stone. Superb acidity here, which Pierre Vincent says is due to the concentration of all of the wine's elements. Finishes with outstanding peppery energy and lift: one of the longest wines of my November tour and nearly impossible to spit. There are two barrels of the 2016 Musigny Grand Cru, one new and one used, 100% whole bunch. There is much more gusto on the nose compared to the Bonnes-Mares, with upfront, expressive red cherry, wild strawberry and cold stone aromas, later complemented by wilted rose petals and bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied, but there is much more body and presence here compared to the Bonnes-Mares: fine tannin, just the right amount of salinité with a complex and sustained finish. Produced by Pascal Marchand and Moray Tawse — Burgundy's passionate custodians of old vineyards using biodynamic principles. This grand cru offering continues their commitment to expressing the terroir in an unmatched poise.

These Pinot Noir grapes are meticulously hand-picked from limestone-rich soils following gentle pressing to protect the delicate flavours. Fermented in oak casks, the wine is then matured for up to 24 months to develop complex layers of aromas.

On the palate, Marchand & Tawse Musigny 2021 is gracefully persistent, presenting red fruit notes mingled with an enchanting mineral footprint. Silky tannins ensure an elegant finish; this is a versatile wine that only becomes more impressive with age. Allow this bottle to be the pièce de résistance of your wine collection, reflective of the distinguished tradition of Burgundy.

The 2009 Musigny is every bit as fabulous from bottle as it was from barrel. A knock-out bouquet leads to super-ripe, floral infused red berries. The 2009 boasts extraordinary perfume, silky tannins and phenomenal balance. I especially like the understated intensity. This is a breathtaking effort from Pierre Vincent and La Vougeraie. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2039.

  • Vougeraie Musigny Grand Cru 2012 (2x75cl)

There are only three barrels of this in 2012 (at the best of times, it's a hand-made, small quantity wine), but what a sublime Musigny it is. Floral and scented with velvety tannins, effortless concentration, some spicy whole bunch notes, subtle oak and a sappy, sikly mid-palate. So good, you could drink it now. But wait!

  • Vougeraie Musigny Grand Cru 2013 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (93-96)

There are just three barrels of this elixir: one new, one one year old and one two years old. Built for a long life in bottle.

  • Vougeraie Musigny Grand Cru 2014 (1x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (95-97)

The 2014 Musigny Grand Cru includes 100% whole cluster fruit and comprises of three barrels, one of them new and the others one- and two-years-old. It has a really lovely, sensual bouquet that is already very elegant and finessed with flint-tinged red cherry and wild strawberry fruit. It is just very very precise. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins with bitter cherry and a touch of spice, embroidered with life-affirming mineralité and a sense of precision on the finish that instantaneously informs you that you are in propitious terroir-tory. What a great Musigny from winemaker Pierre Vincent.

  • Vougeraie Musigny Grand Cru 2015 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (97)

The 2015 Musigny Grand Les Cru has gorgeous red berry fruit on a complex, engaging nose laced with sous-bois/tertiary scents and just a hint of burnt toast or charcoal with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sublime tannic structure, completely harmonious and symmetrical, fanning out almost nonchalantly toward the finish with wondrous red berry fruit and minerals. Stunning. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

  • Vougeraie Musigny Grand Cru 2016 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (95-97)

There are two barrels of the 2016 Musigny Grand Cru, one new and one used, 100% whole bunch. There is much more gusto on the nose compared to the Bonnes-Mares, with upfront, expressive red cherry, wild strawberry and cold stone aromas, later complemented by wilted rose petals and bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied, but there is much more body and presence here compared to the Bonnes-Mares: fine tannin, just the right amount of salinité with a complex and sustained finish. There is a nobility about this Musigny, and that is what we expect to find in a bottle. Superb.

  • Vougeraie Musigny Grand Cru 2017 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (95)

The 2017 Musigny Grand Cru presents a profound nose of brilliant delineation and focus, delivering pure brambly red fruit and simmering underlying mineralité ; wilted rose petal scents surface after 10 minutes in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, very harmonious and silky-smooth. This is not the most powerful or persistent Musigny you will ever taste, but it is undeniably pretty. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

  • Vougeraie Musigny Grand Cru 2018 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (96)

The 2018 Musigny Grand Cru has a complex nose with evidence of some stem addition here lending an underlying peppery character. You could argue that at this stage it rather obscures the terroir expression, though the whole bunch seems commensurate with the fruit. The palate is crisp and precise, the stems lend a discrete peppery character. Not a powerful Musigny, yet perhaps the most elegant with a sensual kirsch-, liquorice-tinged finish. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

Towards the north of the Cote de Nuits, the chalky soils found in Chambolle Musigny can be credited for the signature elegance of these renowned wines. Although they might be lighter in colour and tannins, red wine from Chambolle does not lack for the purity and intensity of its fruit. The pinnacle of all of these qualities can be certainly be found in the two Grand Cru vineyards located in Chambolle, Musigny and Bonnes Mares.
