Burghound (95-98)

(from an incredible 6.46 ha parcel, which doesn’t include the .67 ha section planted to chardonnay). As is often the case, this is aromatically similar to the Chambolle 1er but it’s less expressive and perhaps more densely fruited. There is notably better mid-palate concentration to the substantially sized big-bodied flavors that also possess a positively gorgeous mouthfeel while exuding an abundance of mineral character on the hugely long and impeccably well-balanced and youthfully austere finale. This Zen-like effort is superb and a wine that should also age gracefully over the next two decades. (95-98)/2040+

Vinous (95-97)

The 2021 Musigny Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru underwent a picked piecemeal from the 30 different plots to find the best order that actually was linked to vine age. It has a gorgeous bouquet with brambly red fruit, loam, blood oranges and subtle graphite aromas. Superb delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, fresh citrus like acidity, tensile and focused. This is a very classic, mineral-driven Musigny with surfeit of salinity that gets the saliva flowing on the finish. So bright on the finish.

Burghound (95-98)

A very pungent nose displays plenty of wood and menthol influences on the quite firmly reduced aromas. There is superb richness and intensity to the seductively textured mineral-inflected flavors that are at once powerful yet refined before culminating a very backward, concentrated and stunningly long finish that just goes on and on. This is exceptionally promising and should also live for decades. In a word, brilliant.

Vinous (93-96)

(just a single new 150-liter barrel of this wine, vinified with 50% whole clusters): Bright, dark red. Captivating aromas of raspberry, coffee, mocha and pistachio. Plush, dense and deep, conveying more saline minerality and deep soil tones than primary dark fruits in the early going. But this wine boasts compelling sweetness and finishes with dusty, thoroughly ripe tannins and outstanding length. (Incidentally, Faiveley will actually have two different bottlings of Musigny from the 2015 vintage as they purchased a tiny parcel of vines from the Dufouleur family just after the harvest of 2015. The new wine will be bottled in magnums, which Faiveley plans to open in 2025 as part of the family's 200th-anniversary festivities. Beginning with 2016, there will be a single estate Musigny consisting of about 600 bottles.)

(due to the tiny crop in 2016, Faiveley blended its two plots to make three-quarters of a barrel of wine; vinified with 50% whole clusters): Bright, dark red-ruby. Musky, smoky, reduced nose. Then wonderfully silky and rich on the palate, with its flavors of dark chocolate, black tea and cocoa powder conveying a powerful terroir character. Today the wine's fruit is in the deep background, yet this smoky, chocolatey Musigny conveys great breed. Not a wine, but a tasting experience for the connoisseur, says Jérôme Flous. Today I prefer the two Clos de Bèze cuvées and the Clos des Cortons for their pure fruit intensity. (Incidentally the 2015 Musigny Joseph Faiveley, made from Faiveley's recent purchase of a tiny parcel of vines from the Dufouleur family, was bottled in magnums.)

The 2017 Musigny Grand Cru comprises a blend of the original parcel and the new postage-stamp-sized acquisition between de Vogüé and Roumier. Erwan Faiveley said that his father enjoyed tannic wines and that his only exception was Musigny - because it was so small, it was the only wine vinified using gravity. There is quite a hefty reduction on the nose that makes this difficult to read. The palate, though, is pure class, with filigreed tannin, wonderful focus, firm grip and a very mineral-driven finish. Outstanding.

Chocolate, cassis, black plums and pine needles... the list of aromatics goes on and on. This is dense in flavor yet buoyed by crackling acidity. It is complex and long, yet it is approachable as it is cerebral. The tannins stay silky smooth through the dreamy, long finish. This is aged entirely in "Musignettes", or 60-liter mini barrels hand-crafted for Faiveley by Fran ois Fr res. 2023-44

The 2021 Musigny Grand Cru has a quite bewitching nose with pixelated red berry fruit, crushed limestone, freshly picked rose petals and the sense of whole bunches that is not immediately discernible but you can tell its guiding the background. The palate is harmonious and exquisitely balanced, perfect acidity, in some ways classic in style but there is enormous length and grace befitting this vineyard. Outstanding.

Vinous (98)

The 1985 Musigny Grand Cru is a vintage that I have been lucky enough to drink before, and this bottle is almost identical; indeed, it is highly likely that it originated from the same case. Since the wine has been decanted for a few hours, the bouquet is more immediate than the previous bottle, featuring ethereal, airy red fruit, spellbinding delineation and incredible focus, all wrapped up with almost Les Amoureuses–like precocity. The palate is perfectly balanced with ineffably fine tannins. The fruit is not powerful but intense, revealing hints of red cherry and crushed strawberry, every atom suffused by minerals. This bottle actually showed a little more stalky character than the last and is also a tad more ferrous toward the finish. Yet it remains a magnificent wine even if, dare I say, the 1985 Bonnes-Mares might be just as good or better (at least in magnum). Tasted in November 2018 at the Roumier Musigny dinner at Épure in Hong Kong.

Saturated dark red. Knockout nose combines blueberry, blackberry, violet, orange peel, crushed rocks and minerals. Almost painful in its pure sappy density, with palate-staining flavors of wild dark berries, flowers, and pepper. And yet this is easier to taste today than the comparatively compact Bonnes-Mares. The fabulous mounting finish goes on and on. An incredible wine, with great complexity to come. This boasts the density of a diamond.

Full deep red. Raspberry, violet, truffle and dark chocolate on the nose. Sweet and silky but imploded; as juicy and tight as this is, there's also superb sweet fruit and no rough edges showing. Orange peel and flowers give this a compelling sappy quality. Like the Bonnes-Mares, this has a powerful structure to support a long and graceful evolution in bottle.

Good deep, bright red. Pungent aromas of small wild berries, mint, rose petal and orange peel, plus a whiff of jammy blackberry. Marvelously silky and sweet, offering an uncanny combination of sheer concentration and inner-mouth perfume and vinosity. This struck me as almost more powerful than its 2010 sibling, with more of an impression of weight. Finishes with palate-staining persistence, a hint of violet and great snap.

There's only one barrel of this in 2012 (as there was in 2003 and 1998), but someone will be lucky enough to drink it. It's Christophe Roumier's most ambitous, ageworthy wine, with two thirds whole bunch fermentation, quite marked oak and dense, yet silky concentration, with notes of cinnamon and spice combining with the red and black fruits. Very long, very complex, but still a baby.

Just less than 0.1 ha (a quarter of an acre). Ancient vines – 1905 or possibly older because the register of vineyards was rewritten in 1905 and when they didn’t know how old a vineyard was they just wrote 1905. His grandfather started as a share-cropper on this vineyard in 1924 and the vines were already old. 80% whole bunch. Barrel sample from a 2016 barrel that is three-quarters of the usual 228-litre size. Deep smudgy crimson. How can grapes become a wine like this? The aroma is outstanding. Deep not explosive, yet still with a prettiness in its seriousness. There’s red and dark fruit, there’s spice, there’s peony, there’s rocky minerality. Super-smooth tannins. Fine grained and not far off silky already. Pure, lifted and precise. Outstanding elegance and length.

The 2020 Musigny Grand Cru comprises of one new barrel and one use quarter barrel with 100% whole bunch. You cannot tell the whole bunch on the nose which possesses haunting delineation and focus, vivacious red fruit and stunning tension. There is an audacity about the aromatics that only Musigny can provide. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, crystalline like the Amoureuses yet with even greater depth. Readers will know that I don’t just hand out top potential banded scores to this cuvée by rote. Yet unequivocally, this flirts with perfection.

Distinctly darker red-ruby color. Floral, highly perfumed aromas of strawberry, raspberry, spearmint and sappy spices. Big, rich and silky, but very fresh and delineated, with terrific cut. Very subtle, expanding aftertaste, with slow-building, very persistent fruit and completely enrobed tannins. Concentrated, classy and complete; a thoroughly ripe Musigny that has benefitted from the late harvesting.

Bright cherry-red. Tangy, stony aromas of raspberry, coffee and pungent spices, plus a liqueur-like suggestion of confiture. Silky and pure in the mouth, with wonderfully sweet, suave fruit that demonstrates superb freshness for the vintage. Finishes long, generous and vibrant. The fruit began with 14% potential alcohol, and the wine was bottled at 13.5%; in comparison, the '98 Mugnier Musigny was chaptalized from 12.3% to 12.9%. But this is not at all a weighty wine.

A spellbinding bottle of Mugnier’s 1999 Musigny Grand Cru rounds out the evening. So complex and beguiling, the 1999 is at once light on its feet and quite deep, with terrific freshness and breathtaking balance. Aeration brings out further layers of dimension. The 1999 is at times quite cerebral, while in other moments it is more overtly virile. Like all truly great wines, every taste reveal a different facet of its personality. What a thrill it is to drink this with a group of my closest friends.

Full red, but not darker than the Amoureuses. Sappy, deep aromas of raspberry, minerals and flowers. Offers a very ripe flavor of liqueur-like raspberry but is still quite tightly wound and dominated by its structure. More austere, even monolithic today, and showing less detail than the Amoureuses, perhaps because this was the last wine to be racked. Best now on the long, subtle, stony back end.

The 1999 is at times quite cerebral, while in other moments it is more overtly virile. Like all truly great wines, every taste reveal a different facet of its personality. What a thrill it is to drink this with a group of my closest friends.

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-94)

Full red, but not darker than the Amoureuses. Sappy, deep aromas of raspberry, minerals and flowers. Offers a very ripe flavor of liqueur-like raspberry but is still quite tightly wound and dominated by its structure. More austere, even monolithic today, and showing less detail than the Amoureuses, perhaps because this was the last wine to be racked. Best now on the long, subtle, stony back end.

Towards the north of the Cote de Nuits, the chalky soils found in Chambolle Musigny can be credited for the signature elegance of these renowned wines. Although they might be lighter in colour and tannins, red wine from Chambolle does not lack for the purity and intensity of its fruit. The pinnacle of all of these qualities can be certainly be found in the two Grand Cru vineyards located in Chambolle, Musigny and Bonnes Mares.
