Vinous (93)

The 1996 Musigny Grand Cru has an enticing, well-defined bouquet of dark berries, iris flower, dried blood and pine needle scents, opening nicely with aeration. Medium-bodied and, like many 1996s, quite backward and burly in style; a masculine Musigny with traces of freshly rolled tobacco on the finish. Moderate length. This has clearly got legs, though where is it going to go? Tasted at the Drouhin Musigny vertical in London.

(Don't Miss!) An exotic and spicy nose features raspberry, red current, anise and clove notes that give way to sweet, classy and notably finely detailed flavors that are also relatively forward early but tighten up considerably on the backend. In most vintages, this is the undisputed class of the cellar and while it may ultimately be so once again, in 2004 it has competition. Still, lovely stuff by any standard.

Palish medium red. Good lift to the aromas of red fruits, smoke, cinnamon and fresh herbs. A medium-bodied wine with good smoky intensity to its flavors of redcurrant, iron and spices. There's a coolness to this wine but also an enticing lingering perfume, and the tannins are fine-grained.

This has some subtle power, but in appearance it's all silk and finesse. Cherry, strawberry, currant and mineral aromas and flavors advance stealthily, as this builds in intensity to a long, lingering conclusion. The finish is its best feature. Best from 2016 through 2035. 28 cases imported. -BS

Vinous (92-95)

Good deep red. Captivating aromas of blueberry, violet, coffee bean, white pepper and crushed stone. Juicy on entry, then tight and imploded in the middle, with an energetic core of fruit currently dominated by the wine's structure. Most impressive today on the rising, expanding back end, which saturates the mouth with dusty minerality. This will need eight to ten years of cellaring.

Burghound (97)

Don't miss! This is the first wine in the Drouhin range that I would describe as generously wooded though the oak toast isn't so strong as to completely relegate the wonderfully spicy dark berry fruit, violet, anise, orange pekoe tea and cigar box aromas to the background. The almost painfully intense large-scaled flavors display obvious power and minerality that carries over to the superbly complex, persistent and well-balanced finale. This is a definite 'wow' wine though one that is very much built-to-age.

The 2017 Musigny Grand Cru unfurls in the glass with captivating aromas of dried flowers, rose petal, violets and raspberries that mingle with deeper bass notes of espresso roast and raw cocoa. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, satiny and extremely elegant, with terrific depth, concentration and amplitude, framed by rich but powdery tannins and concluding with a beautifully fragrant finish. Unsurprisingly, this is likely the red wine of the vintage chez Drouhin.

(5-Star Wine) The star wine of the event. Glowing purple in colour, the 2018 Drouhin Musigny is magical in all its dimensions, without any suggestion of being a blockbuster. The fruit is superbly sensual while maintaining its gracefulness, and the tannins are exceptionally fine grained. The acidity is also beautifully integrated and the persistence stands out. What more to say?

The 2020 Musigny Grand Cru is intense and focused on the nose with red berry fruit, undergrowth, plenty of wilted violets coming through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins that frame very pure, red berry fruit, a touch of sappiness as it fans out and deepens on the finish. There is something majestic about this Musigny, and the finish is extraordinarily long.

Deep red-ruby. Knockout superripe nose combines cherry, minerals, flowers, mint and underbrush. A dazzlingly complex and pure nose reveals an incredible breadth of spice-box and dark fruit aromas that are displaying only a whisper of secondary development along with just enough wood to comment on. The ripe and seductive yet incredibly intense medium-bodied flavors display marvelous depth and perfect balance on the sappy, sweet, powerful and hugely long finish that is beautifully detailed and focused. This beauty is a model of grace and understatement and while it could be drunk now with pleasure I would advise waiting as it seems quite clear that there is still plenty of unrealized development potential. In sum, this is stunningly good.

The 2017 Musigny Grand Cru, which contains just under 50% stems, demands more coaxing than the Les Amoureuses, eventually revealing cranberry and hints of hoisin, sous-bois, tobacco and crushed stone aromas, all very complex. This Musigny displays wonderful density and power, yet retains the precision of a noble Burgundy on the long finish. Outstanding.

Lively and full of tension, displaying just a touch of piquancy toward the spicy finish and a very long tail. 1 x 350 litre barrel is the whole crop! No great depth to the colour, nor do I pick up much on the nose. The more sumptuous style of Musigny shows on the palate but in a muted register. Just a fraction peppery behind but the weight of slightly riper fruit returns behind that. Persistent, sensual, well made, just not on a fortissimo scale this year. Drink from 2028-2035+. Towards the north of the Cote de Nuits, the chalky soils found in Chambolle Musigny can be credited for the signature elegance of these renowned wines. Although they might be lighter in colour and tannins, red wine from Chambolle does not lack for the purity and intensity of its fruit. The pinnacle of all of these qualities can be certainly be found in the two Grand Cru vineyards located in Chambolle, Musigny and Bonnes Mares.
