Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Richebourg 2011 has a more extravagant, bold, multilayered bouquet with blackberry, wild strawberry, hints of undergrowth and light marine influences coming in to play: very complex. The palate still has some unresolved oak on the entry, but there is great tension and vibrancy here, the tannins fine and lending this great tension. I would not broach a bottle now because there is so much to give in the future. Just like in the blind Amoureuses tasting in Holland, here Bichot proves itself as one of the top-flight producers. Good medium red. More serious, tangy aromas of raspberry, minerals and smoke. Wonderful sweetness on the palate; really stuffed with fruit and yet less forthcoming today-perhaps more dominated by its structure- than the Clos Vougeot. Finishes long and firm, with a suggestion of medicinal cherry.Inc. VAT£3,531.60 -

Deep red. Sappy aromas of black cherry, clove and chocolate. Rich, full and deep; wonderfully sweet and silky, if not quite as primary as the Clos Vougeot. Spectacular middle-palate fruit and layered texture. Finishes with very refined, sweet tannins and great palate-staining persistence.Inc. VAT£1,043.05 -

Medium red, a bit less saturated than the Clos Vougeot. Deeper aromas of black raspberry, blueberry, flinty smoky minerality and pepper, along with a whiff of gamey reduction. Bigger, broader and sweeter than the Clos Vougeot, and amazingly supple and plump for a grand cru from this vintage, without any loss of shape. The back end is like a booster rocket of fruits and flowers, which cover the wine's acidity and noble tannins today. I'd love to taste this next to the Clos Vougeot in ten years' time.Inc. The 2017 Richebourg Grand Cru reveals a lovely bouquet of Asian spices, plums, raspberries and rose petal, with only subtle hints of the savory nuances of soil and espresso to come with bottle age. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with satiny tannins and a broad, open-knit profile. This is a precocious, dramatic Richebourg in the making, and while it will never rival the depth and concentration Gros achieved in 2016 and 2015, it will certainly turn heads in its youth.Inc. The 2018 Richebourg Grand Cru has a gorgeous bouquet of ebullient blackberry, raspberry and cranberry fruit entwined with crushed stone and wild hedgerow aromas. Blackberries and black currants mesh with violets and sweet herbs on the nose. The palate turns a bit darker with fresh mushrooms and damp earth. There's even an exotic whiff of incense. There is terrific sap and energy here with lean, svelte tannins and racy acidity aplenty for longevity. This comes from 60- to 70-year-old vines in Les V roilles, positioned between DRC and Leroy. 2024-38Inc. VAT£2,961.62 -

The 2021 Richebourg Grand Cru has a beautifully-defined bouquet, dark berries with lots of undergrowth, light shaved black truffle aromas. The mineralité shines through here. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, crisp and quite linear for a Richebourg. Though not persistent as recent vintages, it maintains superb focus with a residual white pepper tinged aftertaste. Excellent.Inc. VAT£6,285.89 -

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Richebourg Grand Cru from A.F. Gros has a very fine bouquet, very expressive with vibrant, shimmering red berry fruit, cherry liqueur, boysenberries and marmalade. This is both complex and involving. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, beautifully poised and supple, elegant and utterly harmonious on the finish. The terroir and winemaking here exude Grand Cru quality. It's probably the best wine I have ever tasted from the estate and in a different league to some older vintages that I tasted from the domaine just a few days later.Inc. VAT£6,187.24 -

The 2013 Richebourg Grand Cru is a wonderful wine. Here it has a superb, quite aristocratic bouquet with wild strawberry, crushed stone, clove and just a subtle marine tincture. It just gives you everything you want from a Richebourg. Tasted at Goedhuis & Co.'s annual Burgundy tasting in London.Inc. VAT£2,557.22 -

The 2014 Richebourg Grand Cru clearly has the best bouquet amongst the A.F. Gros range: wonderful, minerally red berry fruit, dried flowers and just a hint of warm gravel in the background. It gains intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, ripe tannin. The acidity is very well judged and there is a creamy texture lending harmony to this Richebourg. I do think it is the most complex Richebourg I have tasted from the domaine in recent years, but it is one of the most sensual. Give it 8-10 years in bottle so that it can show what it can do.Inc. The 2017 Richebourg Grand Cru has a supremely well-defined bouquet of vibrant red cherries, crushed strawberry, orange zest and crushed stone, developing more floral scents with time and conveying wonderful breeding and real panache. The 2021 Richebourg Grand Cru is aged with 50% whole bunches in 80% new oak. There is a touch of reduction on the nose, though despite that this seems impressively defined and focused. There is an all-but-invisible touch of brett present on the otherwise pretty and beautifully layered nose that features notes of various dark berries, violets and a wide range of spice elements. The gorgeously refined middle weight flavors possess a suave and silky mouth feel before culminating in a strikingly complex finish that seems to dance across the palate while delivering flat out huge length. This is still moderately firm yet with air it could easily be enjoyed now.
