Vinous (95-97)
The 2021 Richebourg Grand Cru has a beautifully defined bouquet that is focused and vivacious, very complex, quite floral in style and actually like Romanée-Saint-Vivant. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, crisp and edgy, very saline with a persistent finish. This seems to unfold with each swirl of the glass, yet you can tell there is hidden depth to this Richebourg that time will reveal. This is pure class.Inc. VAT£2,423.05 -
Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (92-95)
(25% vendange entier): Good bright, full red. Complex, inviting nose combines raspberry, rose petal and orange zest. Intensely flavored and sharply delineated, showing excellent lift and verve to its red fruit and soil flavors. An element of medicinal red cherry and emerging minerality suggest that this silky, deep wine will enjoy a graceful evolution in bottle. Finishes with substantial ripe tannins and lovely rising perfume. With time in the glass, this wine demonstrated its firm spine more clearly.Inc. VAT£5,119.24 -
Wine Advocate (97)
I knew that the 2014 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru would be great when I tasted it from barrel last year...but not this great. It has a wonderful, tensile bouquet that just seems to sparkle. The fruit is so crystalline and laden with energy and mineralité that you almost have to sit down! The palate is surfeit with energy, the fruit perhaps a little darker than in barrel with white pepper, spices towards the almost Richebourg-like finish. Tasting them side-by-side, I would err for this over the Richebourg - it is a magnificent wine from Charles van Canneyt.Inc. VAT£2,937.62 -
Decanter (97)
This 1920 parcel is situated in the northern part of the Romanée-St-Vivant grand cru, very close to Domaine de la Romanée-Conti's holdings - and it's often a match for that wine. It's detailed, lacy and refreshing, with adroitly integrated 50% new wood and layers of red cherry, raspberry and red plum fruit. It has focussed acidity and palate-caressing tannins. Effortlessly complex.Inc. VAT£3,039.62 -
Vinous (95+)
Deep ruby-red. Very reticent but pure aromas of black raspberry, minerals and menthol. Lush on entry, then precise and backward in the middle, with an almost medicinal austerity and outstanding concentration. This expands and explodes on the back end, coating the palate with black cherry, bitter chocolate and mineral flavors. A rare case of a 2003 that seems as primary as most '04s are today, and that will require extended bottle aging. One of the early superstars of the vintage.Inc. VAT£9,399.64 -
Burghound (97)
There is the first whiff of secondary character to the gorgeously complex red, black and violet-infused aromas that are trimmed with a dazzling array of spice and sandalwood hints. The round, intense and overtly muscular broad-shouldered flavors possess real power and superb intensity that slowly builds from the mid-palate to the explosively persistent and robust finish. I really like the purity of expression here on the linear and stony backend that has a dusty quality from all of the dry extract that coats the palate and buffers the still notably firm tannic spine. This is a big wine but it remains impeccably well-balanced and it should live for decades, indeed it is still very much in need of more cellar time.Inc. VAT£39,897.67 -
Burghound (96)
A gorgeously spiced and perfumed nose is intensely floral in character while offering up notes of both red and dark currant, sandalwood, exotic Asian-style tea and discreet dried rose petal nuances. The muscular yet refined big-bodied flavors exude ample minerality onto the powerful, focused and once again compact, focused and explosively long finish. This too is indisputably built-to-age and I wouldn't be surprised if it required fully 20 years before it is fully ready. In sum this Richebourg is one of the finest wines of the 2014 vintage.Inc. The 2017 Richebourg Grand Cru has a showstopping, persistent bouquet of intense blackberry, sous-bois and crushed stone. The 2018 Richebourg Grand Cru has a plush nose with layers of red fruit, and a veneer of seriously high-quality oak perfectly in proportion to fruit intensity. Lavish and precocious in keeping with the growing season. The palate is medium-bodied with a core of sweet sappy red fruit, lightly spiced with candied orange peel and marmalade scents, surprisingly peppery and vibrant on its persistent peacock’s tail of a finish. Pretty awesome overall. This Richebourg unquestionably needs time. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.Inc. VAT£1,791.20 -

The 2016 Romanée Saint Vivant Grand Cru has a beautifully defined bouquet. The fruit is darker than its peers: blackberry, boysenberry, hints of blueberry and crushed violet petals. This is quintessential Romanée-Saint-Vivant. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin and perfectly judged acidity. This is endowed with disarming structure and poise, fanning out beautifully towards the finish. A fabulous wine but it deserves a decade in the cellar. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. The magnificent, healthy medium-to-dark ruby-colored 1990 Richebourg has stupendous depth and complexity to its dark fruit-dominated aromas. Soy and hoisin sauces, cherries, and raspberries can be discerned in its deep, medium-to-full-bodied character. Bright ruby-red. Slightly blacker, less exotic nose dominated by dark berries, licorice and minerals. Less lush and more reserved today than the RSV but penetrating, vibrant and gripping. Really folded in on itself and hiding more than it's revealing; less obviously sweet than the RSV. But the long, minerally, very fine finish suggests that this wine will reward a decade or so of bottle aging.Inc. VAT£13,251.20 -

The 2002 Richebourg Grand Cru must surely be Lalou Bize-Leroy's finest wine of the vintage. It has more class than the 2002 Latricières-Chambertin--pure wild strawberry and black truffle on the nose that gathers momentum with each ticking hand of the clock as if to say: You want more? Of course you do. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannin. There is great depth here as one expects from a Richebourg, not a powerful grand cru because this vintage was all about the nuance and delicacy, but it fans out wondrously on the finish with crushed strawberry and hints of cured meats. Very long, very elegant, very Leroy. This is an absolute treat. Tasted January 2016.Inc. VAT£13,464.80 -

Good bright, deep red with ruby highlights. Knockout nose combines cassis, violet, minerals and menthol; this smells important! Sweet and lush in the mouth, conveying a sense of power and force without any rough edges; in fact this is downright spherical. The wine's insidious mineral concentration and rose petal lift give it great elegance in spite of its sheer size. Wonderfully long and sweet on the back end, finishing with explosive flavors of red fruits, flowers and minerals. Wow!Inc. VAT£85,549.24 -

Good deep medium red. Locked up tight on the nose. Tight on entry, then juicy, compressed and extremely young in the middle palate, with a powerful minerality and firm acidity combining to keep the wine's sharply delineated fruit and mineral flavors under wraps. This classic Richebourg is most impressive today on its slowly mounting, very long and gripping back end. The 2012 Richebourg towers on the palate with huge tannins and almost a severe expression of structure.
