Wine Advocate (96)

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Richebourg 2011 has a more extravagant, bold, multilayered bouquet with blackberry, wild strawberry, hints of undergrowth and light marine influences coming in to play: very complex. The palate still has some unresolved oak on the entry, but there is great tension and vibrancy here, the tannins fine and lending this great tension. I would not broach a bottle now because there is so much to give in the future. Just like in the blind Amoureuses tasting in Holland, here Bichot proves itself as one of the top-flight producers. Bravo!

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-94)

Good medium red. More serious, tangy aromas of raspberry, minerals and smoke. Wonderful sweetness on the palate; really stuffed with fruit and yet less forthcoming today-perhaps more dominated by its structure- than the Clos Vougeot. Finishes long and firm, with a suggestion of medicinal cherry.

Deep red. Sappy aromas of black cherry, clove and chocolate. Rich, full and deep; wonderfully sweet and silky, if not quite as primary as the Clos Vougeot. Spectacular middle-palate fruit and layered texture. Finishes with very refined, sweet tannins and great palate-staining persistence.

Vinous (94+)

Medium red, a bit less saturated than the Clos Vougeot. Deeper aromas of black raspberry, blueberry, flinty smoky minerality and pepper, along with a whiff of gamey reduction. Bigger, broader and sweeter than the Clos Vougeot, and amazingly supple and plump for a grand cru from this vintage, without any loss of shape. The back end is like a booster rocket of fruits and flowers, which cover the wine's acidity and noble tannins today. I'd love to taste this next to the Clos Vougeot in ten years' time.

The 2017 Richebourg Grand Cru reveals a lovely bouquet of Asian spices, plums, raspberries and rose petal, with only subtle hints of the savory nuances of soil and espresso to come with bottle age. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with satiny tannins and a broad, open-knit profile. This is a precocious, dramatic Richebourg in the making, and while it will never rival the depth and concentration Gros achieved in 2016 and 2015, it will certainly turn heads in its youth.

Wine Advocate (97)

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Richebourg Grand Cru from A.F. Gros has a very fine bouquet, very expressive with vibrant, shimmering red berry fruit, cherry liqueur, boysenberries and marmalade. This is both complex and involving. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, beautifully poised and supple, elegant and utterly harmonious on the finish. The terroir and winemaking here exude Grand Cru quality. It's probably the best wine I have ever tasted from the estate and in a different league to some older vintages that I tasted from the domaine just a few days later.

The 2013 Richebourg Grand Cru is a wonderful wine. Here it has a superb, quite aristocratic bouquet with wild strawberry, crushed stone, clove and just a subtle marine tincture. It just seems to grow in stature. The palate is extremely well balanced with firm backbone, great density with a muscular, quite grippy finish. It just gives you everything you want from a Richebourg. Tasted at Goedhuis & Co.'s annual Burgundy tasting in London.

The 2017 Richebourg Grand Cru has a supremely well-defined bouquet of vibrant red cherries, crushed strawberry, orange zest and crushed stone, developing more floral scents with time and conveying wonderful breeding and real panache. The extremely well balanced palate reveals layers of red berry fruit, lightly spiced, with just a subtle tang of marmalade toward the finish. Impressive in terms of weight and body, this deserves several years in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

The 2021 Richebourg Grand Cru is aged with 50% whole bunches in 80% new oak. There is a touch of reduction on the nose, though despite that this seems impressively defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied, more expressive with fine-boned tannins, taut and fresh, quite intense (as you would expect from a Richebourg). I appreciate the manner in which it builds and exerts insistent grip and structure on the finish. Serious.

There is an all-but-invisible touch of brett present on the otherwise pretty and beautifully layered nose that features notes of various dark berries, violets and a wide range of spice elements. The gorgeously refined middle weight flavors possess a suave and silky mouth feel before culminating in a strikingly complex finish that seems to dance across the palate while delivering flat out huge length. This is still moderately firm yet with air it could easily be enjoyed now. Note that my score offers the benefit of the doubt regarding the brett as I have no other recent notes and thus I can't say whether this bottle was entirely representative.

Good bright, dark red. Dark berries, violet and a whiff of fresh peppercorn on the nose, complicated by mineral and oak notes. Sweet, creamy fruit is given definition by firm acidity. The 2008 La Tache amply illustrates why this monopole is the darling among most of those lucky enough to regularly taste or collect the wines of the Domaine de La Romanee-Conti. Hints of mocha, vanilla, maraschino, and almond paste lend a confectionary note to generously rich cassis and raspberry, while Latakia tobacco, peat, clove, black pepper, star anise, and cumin contribute commune-typical Vosne-Romanee personality in spades. The high-toned, sweet themes continue inner mouth, with intimation of heliotrope, rowan, and lily perfume, while the wine’s smoky, spicy elements seem to descend into a low-register undertone of roasted red meats and forest floor. As this opens to the air, a subtly sweet-saline suggestion of lobster shell reduction adds richness and succulence. Strikingly creamy in feel, this La Tache nevertheless possessed a fresh berry edge that helps convey vibrancy to a finish that practically glows in your mouth, offering another of those Burgundian paradoxes of light and dark. Here, de Villaine’s case for long-term potential is easily made, and I expect this will richly reward at least 15-20 years of attention.

In a region with some of the world’s most expensive and sought after Pinot Noir, the appellation of Vosne-Romanee is at the very top of this list, consistently outshining even its most impressive neighbours. Much has been waxed poetic about these wines, which are praised for their intensity, power, finesse, richness, and overall elegance. There are eight Grand Cru vineyards here including Richebourg, Romanee-Saint-Vivant, Echezeaux, Grands Echezeaux, as well as the monopoles La Grande Rue (Domaine Lamarche), La Romanee (Comte Liger-Belair), and Romanee-Conti and La Tache (both monopoles of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti.)
