Vinous (88)

The 2015 Vosne-Romanée Charmes des Mazières 1er Cru is showing some VA on the nose that is masking the terroir expression. The palate is sweet and candied with rather aggressive tannin, possibly overdone in the winery, although I can abide the grainy, quite masculine finish. But will that dry out with age? Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Wine Advocate (91-93)

Guyon walks the old-vine parcels that produce this cuvée a day or two before harvest, selecting grapes by taste and marking which vines to pick and which to relegate to the regular Vosne-Romanée. The ensuing 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Charmes de Mazières is outstanding, unfurling in the glass with a deep but reserved bouquet of wild berries, rose petal, cinnamon, incense and orange rind. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied and deeper, more concentrated and more layered than the regular Vosne, framed by fine chewy tannins that will need some time. It's a wine that transcends the vintage.

100% decorticated. Brilliant dense purple in colour, breathtaking on first sniff ! This is ethereal and powerful too. All in red fruit and pure roses. The lightest white pepper. Sensual ripe red raspberry. Incredible intensity, and the fruit waves itself on to the end of the palate. Some tannins, intense white pepper, joyous red fruit notes. This needs lots more time before thinking of bottling. Tasted: November 2021

Not deeper in colour, perhaps just a touch brighter even than the village Vosne. An even finer detail, with more precision, still just a note too much of new oak. Broader shoulders, more structure behind, which tames the fruit and stops it getting soupy. An exceptional intensity of liquid raspberry with great persistence. Drink from 2027-2033.

The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru has a slightly meaty/feral bouquet, just a hint of gaminess that might become more conspicuous with bottle age. Otherwise I find this well defined and with flattering red cherry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. There is a fine bead of acidity here, a pleasant fleshy mouthfeel towards the finish and a residual salinity that beckons you back for the next sip. This represents another impressive wine from Charles Van Canneyt. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

The 2013 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru les Malconsorts was the latest to finish its malolactic in mid-September. The nose has plenty of energy: red berry fruit, orange sorbet, wet limestone and fresh prune scents. The palate is primal with a dense body of red fruit. The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts has a disarmingly beautiful nose with blackcurrant, briary and cold stone scents that offer great typicité. The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru has a southern orientation, but Mathilde Grivot was surprised that it only reached 13.0° alcohol; this was due, she believes, to the rain before the harvest. It takes a little time to cohere in the glass. After a couple of minutes, it offers lovely red and black fruit intermingling with black truffle and damp earthy/woodland aromas, delicate and refined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, precise and focused. Not a Aux Brûlées of substance and density, but rather one of precision and focus. Excellent.

An even spicier and slightly riper nose offers up aromas of plum liqueur, red cherry and a pretty array of floral scents and in particular violet and lavender. The super-sleek, refined and equally energetic middle weight flavors possess a gorgeous texture that carries over to the moderately structured, youthfully austere and beautifully persistent finale. The supporting tannins are more sophisticated if less dense and while this too is going to require extended cellaring, this lovely effort should be reasonably approachable after 8ish or so years. Vinous (94-96)

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet, for this writer, demonstrating a little more precision and mineralité compared to the Les Beaumonts. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, more saline than the Les Beaumonts with a very persistent finish. Superb.

Vinous (88-90)

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Village has quite a high-toned bouquet, though it maintains control, with macerated black cherries, bilberry and violet scents. The palate is medium-bodied, quite firm in the mouth, a pleasant saline touch but it feels just a little hemmed in on the finish. That should loosen-up once its has completed its élevage.

Vinous (91-93)

The 2011 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brulées is distinguished by its gorgeous inner intensity and a solid core of expressive red fruit. Firm, powerful, yet also impeccable refined, the Brulées needs a few years to open up. The balance of fruit and tannin is impeccable. At times, the Brulées is at times a bit wild in its aromas and flavors, but texturally it is more polished. There is no shortage of personality here.

Vinous (93-95)

Excellent.

Burghound (92-94)

An even spicier and slightly riper nose offers up aromas of plum liqueur, red cherry and a pretty array of floral scents and in particular violet and lavender. The super-sleek, refined and equally energetic middle weight flavors possess a gorgeous texture that carries over to the moderately structured, youthfully austere and beautifully persistent finale. The supporting tannins are more sophisticated if less dense and while this too is going to require extended cellaring, this lovely effort should be reasonably approachable after 8ish or so years. Vinous (93-95)

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru has an exquisitely-delineated bouquet with black plum and raspberry fruit that unfold with each swirl of the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly flinty opening, compact, quite peppery with a deepening and rather grippy finish. There is something sultry about this Aux Brûlées, a Premier Cru that will repay 4-5 years in the cellar.

Wine Advocate (94+)

The 2009 Vosne-Romanee Les Beaux Monts is fabulous. Waves of fruit jump from the glass. The Beaux-Monts impresses for its textural depth and richness. There is an intense minerality to the fruit that gives the wine much of its power. The Beaux-Monts is firing on all cylinders today. A crescendo of fruit saturates the palate on the finish. This is another headspinning 2009 from Grivot. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029.
