The ensuing 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Charmes de Mazières is outstanding, unfurling in the glass with a deep but reserved bouquet of wild berries, rose petal, cinnamon, incense and orange rind. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied and deeper, more concentrated and more layered than the regular Vosne, framed by fine chewy tannins that will need some time. It has an earthy, loamy nose, almost peat-like, very well defined, with ample black fruit. The palate has sinew on the entry and great depth and assertiveness. Very complex and intellectual with that limestone terroir defining the very persistent finish. This is a wonderful Malconsorts for those who worship "proper" Burgundy. |

It takes a little time to cohere in the glass. After a couple of minutes, it offers lovely red and black fruit intermingling with black truffle and damp earthy/woodland aromas, delicate and refined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, precise and focused. Not a Aux Brûlées of substance and density, but rather one of precision and focus. Excellent. |
