Both more concentrated and more introverted than the preceding Beaux Monts, Dujac's 2017 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts opens in the glass with aromas of sweet red berries, plums, orange rind, smoked duck and peonies. On the palate, it's full-bodied, supple and elegantly muscular, with fine depth at the core, powdery tannins and mouthwatering acids, concluding with a perfumed finish.

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts 1er Cru has an extravagant bouquet with brambly red fruit laced with shucked oyster shell and a touch of seaweed. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, lightly spiced with a subtle ash-like note towards the composed finish. This has great backbone that should guarantee its longevity. The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Aux Malconsorts 1er Cru has a more savory bouquet than the Les Beaux Monts, the whole bunch less integrated by direct comparison and yet it also delivers more terroir expression and mineralité. Touches of cracked black pepper and sage lend complexity to the dark berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, very harmonious with white pepper and clove, a lovely grainy texture and perhaps more refinement compared to the Echézeaux. The kind of Vosne-Romanée that you want to elope with.

The Malconsorts is still in barrel for a later bottling. Bright dense purple, this wine has a huge energy on the nose. Intense blossoming, fabulous in all regards even with a few peaches in the dark red fruit mix. Magical aftertaste. Doing its Malconsorts thing to a high degree. Tasted: December 2021

The 2014 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru les Beaux Monts has a very attractive bouquet, pure and sensual with black cherries, boysenberry and a touch of blueberry. Understated but quite compelling. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, silky in texture, beautifully balanced with very well judged acidity with a touch of salinity towards the finish. This is a very well crafted Beaumonts that deserves several years in bottle.

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru has a perfumed and enticing bouquet with brambly black fruit, black truffle and Earl Grey aromas gently wafting from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins. The whole bunch influence is discrete here but lends an attractive white pepper and clove note towards the finish that fans out wonderful whilst maintaining freshness and tension. Just outflanked by the Aux Malconsorts, nevertheless, this is a brilliant Les Beaux Monts.

Bright, dark red. Distinctly blacker and wilder on the nose than the Echézeaux, with dark berry and floral aromas complicated by notes of sous-bois, coffee, mocha and menthol. Rather tight, even musclebound, today but boasts terrific energy to its blackberry, menthol and violet flavors. (13.3 alcohol; 40% vendange entier; 80% new oak; no frost): Good dark red. A bit redder and more showy in its fruit character and less medicinal on the nose than the Petits Monts. Rounder and sweeter in the mouth, with a palate-saturating flavor of dark cherry confiture. Builds impressively on the ripely tannic back end, with a strong violet note emerging. Very different from the Petits Monts in shape and style: this is rounder while the Petits Monts is more minerally and upright.

Vinous (90-92)

The 2020 Vosne-Romanée Village has a quintessential floral bouquet with pressed violet infusing the red fruit, veins of blood orange emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with palpable energy. Taut and fresh, this is a Vosne-Romanée Village that displays wonderful focus and might be my pick of Rouget’s wines if price is factored in. Recommended.

Wine Advocate (86-88)

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Village bursts with aromas of rich cassis, plums and spices, framed by toasty new oak. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with melting tannins and a supple, easygoing profile. This will drink well young.

Vinous (87-89)

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Village, which includes three climats plus younger vines, each pressed separately and with no whole bunches. It has quite an outgoing bouquet with vanilla-tinged red fruit, fine delineation, hints of orange blossom. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, nice proportion, open-knit with a light breezy finish. Fine.

Vinous (91-94)

(13.3 alcohol; 40% vendange entier; 80% new oak; no frost): Good dark red. A bit redder and more showy in its fruit character and less medicinal on the nose than the Petits Monts. Rounder and sweeter in the mouth, with a palate-saturating flavor of dark cherry confiture. Builds impressively on the ripely tannic back end, with a strong violet note emerging. Very different from the Petits Monts in shape and style: this is rounder while the Petits Monts is more minerally and upright.

In a region with some of the world’s most expensive and sought after Pinot Noir, the appellation of Vosne-Romanee is at the very top of this list, consistently outshining even its most impressive neighbours. Much has been waxed poetic about these wines, which are praised for their intensity, power, finesse, richness, and overall elegance. There are eight Grand Cru vineyards here including Richebourg, Romanee-Saint-Vivant, Echezeaux, Grands Echezeaux, as well as the monopoles La Grande Rue (Domaine Lamarche), La Romanee (Comte Liger-Belair), and Romanee-Conti and La Tache (both monopoles of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti.)
