Wine Advocate (91+)The superb 2016 Vosne-Romanée Village unfurls in the glass with a lovely bouquet of raspberries, cherries, dark chocolate, grilled game and spicy new wood. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a tight-knit core, fine-grained but firm structuring tannins and juicy balancing acids. This has closed down since the days of its comparatively expressive showing from barrel, and it's now clear that this is a vintage that will demand some time. |

Wine Advocate (93)The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts is showing well from bottle, unwinding in the glass to offer up a youthfully reserved bouquet of blackberries, cherries, plums, grilled game bird, rich soil and smoky new oak. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, rich and voluptuous, with a succulent core of fruit, vibrant fruit flavors and a fine-grained framing of structuring tannins. It's appreciably more reserved than earlier renditions of this cuvée, perhaps because Maxime Cheurlin now has an air-conditioned cellar and is maturing his wine for two winters in barrel. It will be interesting to follow its evolution over the coming decade. |

Vinous (95)The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru has a slightly meaty/feral bouquet, just a hint of gaminess that might become more conspicuous with bottle age. Otherwise I find this well defined and with flattering red cherry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin. There is a fine bead of acidity here, a pleasant fleshy mouthfeel towards the finish and a residual salinity that beckons you back for the next sip. This represents another impressive wine from Charles Van Canneyt. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. |

Wine Advocate (94-96)The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts has a disarmingly beautiful nose with blackcurrant, briary and cold stone scents that offer great typicité. Likewise, the palate has a structure typical of this premier cru, denser and more mineral-driven than the Suchots, perhaps at the same time more aloof. But that is what you want from a Malconsorts and there is great precision on the long and tender finish. There is great potential here. |

Vinous (88-91)(made from 12 parcels encompassing 7 different terroirs, according to Grivot): Bright, dark red. Aromas of black cherry and cocoa powder. Juicy and energetic, showing lovely inner-mouth lift and refinement to its flavors of black fruits, licorice, violet and cocoa powder. Quite tightly wound on the sappy back end, spreading out subtly and leaving behind vibrant note of spices and black pepper. |

Vinous (96)The 2016 Romanée Saint Vivant Grand Cru has a beautifully defined bouquet. The fruit is darker than its peers: blackberry, boysenberry, hints of blueberry and crushed violet petals. This is quintessential Romanée-Saint-Vivant. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin and perfectly judged acidity. This is endowed with disarming structure and poise, fanning out beautifully towards the finish. A fabulous wine but it deserves a decade in the cellar. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. Burghound (93)A ripe if highly restrained mix of red and blue fruit is liberally sprinkled with spice and floral notes. There is good volume and solid mid-palate density to the seductively delicious big-bodied flavors that are shaped by a phenolically mature tannic spine, all wrapped in a mildly rustic but highly persistent mineral-inflected finish. Note well that this muscular and robust effort is definitely going to need at least 7 to 8 years of keeping and require 15+, perhaps even slightly more. |

Vinous (95-97)Bright, dark red-ruby. Heady aromas of black fruits, tart cherry stomp, licorice and violet. Wonderfully plush and fine-grained but medicinal and backward, with its flavors of black fruits, flowers and spices accented by pungent minerality. Very densely packed but even more imploded than the Cros Parantoux and more difficult to taste today. A wine with outstanding intensity and focus, as well as the medicinal reserve for a long evolution in the cellar. Firm tannins are perfectly buffered by strong material. |

Vinous (95-97)(alcohol close to 14%): Bright ruby-red. Very pure aromas of black raspberry, licorice, bitter chocolate and pungent crushed-stone minerality. Boasts alluring sweetness and sexy inner-mouth perfume, with its intense dark fruit and mineral flavors enlivened by brisk acidity. Not quite as salty as the Brûlées but still boasts terrific inner-mouth tension and energy. Still a bit youthfully tight--and less charming than the Brûlées--but not at all hard. The tannins reach the front teeth. Méo harvested this fruit later than the Brûlées, and this wine will need more bottle aging for its structure to soften. A great premier cru in the making. |

Vinous (94-97)Saturated ruby-red. Aromatic and very pure but restrained on the nose, offering high-pitched aromas of dark raspberry, black cherry, flowers, spices and minerals. Impressively concentrated and dense yet light on its feet, with its very intense flavors of dark fruits, spices and flowers enlivened by saline tension. Almost painful in the middle palate in the early going, this wine finishes with firm but suave tannins and outstanding lingering perfume. Méo did not add SO2 in the fermenter because this wine often has reduction issues. With its fruit of steel, this beauty should enjoy a long life in bottle. |

Vinous (90-92)(Vosne-Romanée was Perrot-Minot's only commune that was almost totally spared by frost in 2016; the yield here was about 40 hectoliters per hectare): Dark red with ruby tones. More brooding and dark on the nose than the village Chambolle, offering aromas of cherry, black raspberry and bitter chocolate. Dense, ripe and silky-smooth in the mouth, but still with excellent acidity and floral, spicy lift to its black fruit flavors. Strong calcaire energy kicks in on the back end, giving the persistent finish an element of medicinal reserve and a rocky, saline complexity. |

Wine Advocate (94-96)The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts was showing a little more reduction on the nose compared to the other cuvées. Underneath though, lies intense and quite voluminous red berry fruit, later rose petals, a touch of woodland coming through. The palate is medium-bodied with quite high-toned entry, vivacious blueberry fruit mixed with cassis and orange pith, then closing in quickly on a structure and grippy finish (it finished its malolactic not until September so this would explain this). It will require several years in bottle. It is not quite as audacious as the 2015 Malconsorts, but certainly a prince to that king. |
