Vinous (92-94)

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Petit Monts 1er Cru is fully de-stemmed and matured in 75% new oak. It has a very pure, floral bouquet of black cherries, cassis and crushed violet scents on the nose, becoming more and more floral with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins, sorbet-fresh from the start and culminating in an intense, almost vitamin-like finish. Excellent.

There is just enough reduction present to push the underlying fruit to the background but not so much as to mask the pretty spice wisps. There is an equally seductive mouthfeel to the velvet-textured flavors that possess even better depth on the firm, palate coating and impressively persistent finish. This is an excellent Vosne villages that is worth your interest.

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru has a more refined, mineral-driven, slightly earthier bouquet compared to Les Suchots, offering a mixture of red and black fruit, bay leaf and a touch of baking powder. The palate is medium-bodied with a core of candied red fruit, quite plush and very sensual. Orange and mango notes permeate the lush, caressing finish. You could drink this now. One that will be too tempting once in bottle.

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots is showing brilliantly this year, wafting from the glass with a deep-pitched bouquet of cassis, blackberries, spices and dark chocolate. The 2018 Richebourg Grand Cru has a plush nose with layers of red fruit, and a veneer of seriously high-quality oak perfectly in proportion to fruit intensity. Lavish and precocious in keeping with the growing season. The palate is medium-bodied with a core of sweet sappy red fruit, lightly spiced with candied orange peel and marmalade scents, surprisingly peppery and vibrant on its persistent peacock’s tail of a finish. Pretty awesome overall. This Richebourg unquestionably needs time. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brûlées 1er Cru has a southern orientation, but Mathilde Grivot was surprised that it only reached 13.0° alcohol; this was due, she believes, to the rain before the harvest. It takes a little time to cohere in the glass. After a couple of minutes, it offers lovely red and black fruit intermingling with black truffle and damp earthy/woodland aromas, delicate and refined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, precise and focused. Not a Aux Brûlées of substance and density, but rather one of precision and focus. Excellent.
