Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (90-92)

Pleasing mid crimson. There is less immediate fruit evident on the nose. Less ripe, stricter, firmer, some citrus notes, middleweight, as ever I don’t quite see the magic at least while this wine is young. More in acidity than tannin to finish. Tasted: December 2021

Wine Advocate (88)

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Les Chaumes from Domaine François Lamarche was showing some volatility on the nose, though nothing to get too worried about. Hints of cherry liqueur here with a slight reductive metallic note. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly dry tannin and some hardness deriving from wood tannins on the finish. Perhaps bottle age will help this? Then again, it never quite got out of the blocks when I tasted it in barrel.

Wine Advocate (92)

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts from Domaine François Lamarche has a refined and detailed bouquet: fresh strawberry, cranberry leaf and minerals, all very attractive. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, just a dab of oak to be fully subsumed, but with plenty of weight and volume on the pretty, quite spicy finish. It's just a delicious, well-crafted Vosne-Romanée and one of the best from the domaine in 2012.

Vinous (95)

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet of dark berry fruit, oyster shell, sous-bois and rose petals, intense and fragrant. The harmonious palate is silky-smooth on the entry with finely judged acidity. A subtle touch of spice develops nicely toward the finish, which leaves a persistent, peppery aftertaste. A toothsome Vosne-Romanée to tuck away for several years. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

Wine Advocate (88)

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots 2011 is more reserved on the nose than their Chaumées, but there is a touch more complexity, the brambly red and black fruit infused with fine minerality and tension. The palate is smooth and rounded on the entry with a lot of extraction so that it feels plump around the middle. Juicy and pure, what it lacks in complexity is compensated by its saturated tannins and opulent blueberry-tinged finish that is just missing some persistence, cutting away before you have had an opportunity to show your gratitude.

Wine Advocate (85)

The 2015 Vosne Romanee 1er Cru les Suchots offers up aromas of plums, cassis and spice, followed by a medium-bodied, rather inscrutable palate without any real discernible concentration or depth. Perhaps the wine is simply closed down after bottling and will emerge from its shell with age?

Vinous (87-89)

The 2021 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a pretty, light nose with crushed strawberry and raspberry fruit, well-defined if just missing a little fruit concentration. The palate is medium- to light-bodied with pleasant edgy tannins, nicely pitched acidity, quite linear at the moment with a dab of spice towards the finish. Modest length.

Vinous (94+)

Bright ruby-red. Slightly blacker, less exotic nose dominated by dark berries, licorice and minerals. Less lush and more reserved today than the RSV but penetrating, vibrant and gripping. Really folded in on itself and hiding more than it's revealing; less obviously sweet than the RSV. But the long, minerally, very fine finish suggests that this wine will reward a decade or so of bottle aging.

Wine Advocate (97)

The 2002 Richebourg Grand Cru must surely be Lalou Bize-Leroy's finest wine of the vintage. It has more class than the 2002 Latricières-Chambertin--pure wild strawberry and black truffle on the nose that gathers momentum with each ticking hand of the clock as if to say: You want more? Of course you do. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannin. There is great depth here as one expects from a Richebourg, not a powerful grand cru because this vintage was all about the nuance and delicacy, but it fans out wondrously on the finish with crushed strawberry and hints of cured meats. Very long, very elegant, very Leroy. This is an absolute treat. Tasted January 2016.

Vinous (90-93)

Deep ruby-red. Highly perfumed black fruit nose hints at a faint roasted quality. Less voluminous and sweet than the above, but still has terrific density and grip. A tougher style of wine than the Boudots, not dry but more austere than the last sample. Finishes with fine tannins and excellent length.

The 2014 Vosne-Romanée Aux Brulées is a wine of raw, unbridled power. Dense and also deeply expressive, but very much in need of time to come together, the Brulées is super-impressive. Smoke, scorched earth and driven red-toned notes give the 2014 its distinctively pungent, bold personality.

In a region with some of the world’s most expensive and sought after Pinot Noir, the appellation of Vosne-Romanee is at the very top of this list, consistently outshining even its most impressive neighbours. Much has been waxed poetic about these wines, which are praised for their intensity, power, finesse, richness, and overall elegance. There are eight Grand Cru vineyards here including Richebourg, Romanee-Saint-Vivant, Echezeaux, Grands Echezeaux, as well as the monopoles La Grande Rue (Domaine Lamarche), La Romanee (Comte Liger-Belair), and Romanee-Conti and La Tache (both monopoles of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti.)
