The 2020 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru is very intense on the nose, a mixture of red and blueber fruit, just a faint touch of peppermint. Plenty of energy here. The palate is medium-bodied with chiselled tannins, perfectly judged acidity, quite saline in the mouth with a mineral-driven finish that expands wonderfully. There is an abiding sense of completeness here. Outstanding.

Vinous (91-93)

Bright red-ruby. Very pure, perfumed aromas and flavors of blackberry, boysenberry, minerals, violet and cocoa powder. Sappy and tightly wound, conveying a powerful impression of vinosity thanks to its pungent minerality. The pH here of 3. 45 is the lowest in the cellar in 2014. Indeed, this wine shows a distinctly cool quality in the context of the vintage, and finishes with excellent chewy length. Tremblay told me that the 2008 version of this wine was paired by a chef with a tuna dish during a trip to Tokyo and that the combination was perfect.

A brooding and much more deeply pitched and sauvage-inflected nose offers up notes of red and dark currant along with more newly turned earth inferences. The slightly riper but still sleek and nicely rich middle weight flavors also possess outstanding delineation on the equally austere but longer finish. This needs to add depth, but it may well do so if allowed 6 to 8 years of bottle aging. (88-91)/2026+

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-94)

Slightly more saturated color. Finer, more complex nose combines black cherry, minerals, licorice, iron, game, tobacco and coconut. More tightly wound than the Charmes, with terrific intensity, higher acidity, and crystal-clear flavors. Really juicy at the core. Very long and fine on the aftertaste. The kind of Burgundy that will gain in flesh as it develops in bottle.

Medium red. Reticent but complex nose suggests small wild red berries and coffee; cooler than the Charmes. Dense and firm, with very good stuffing and considerable nuance. Less open than the Charmes but already quite aromatic in the mouth. A classy, very persistent grand cru that needs at least two or three years of further cellaring.

Vinous (92)

Good saturated deep red. Dark berries, coffee and smoked meat on the nose. Dense, rich and deep, with lovely verve. Dark fruit and licorice flavors are rather shy today. But this has a deep core of material, and finishes with tannins that are broad and ripe for the year.

Vinous (90-92)

Good red-ruby color. Black fruits, leather, violet and spicy oak on the rather subtle but wild nose. Juicy, rich and densely packed; a step up over the preceding wines in power and definition. But this is distinctly backward for 2003 and in need of at least five or six years of cellaring. Finishes impressively broad, with a light dusting of tannins.

Vinous (94+)

Good deep, bright red. Urgent aromas of crushed dark fruits and white pepper; brilliantly delineated but extremely unevolved. Then wonderfully juicy and bright in the mouth, with complex mocha and game hints adding interest to the concentrated, sappy berry flavors. Dense, classically dry and thoroughly ripe grand cru that's still a bit closed in on itself. The very long, slow-mounting finish features substantial suave tannins and terrific underlying structure. This should evolve in bottle for at least a couple of decades.

The 2019 Clos de Tart Grand Cru has turned out brilliantly. Mingling notes of wild berries and cherries with hints of peonies, rose petal, orange rind, exotic spices and musk, it's full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with a velvety attack that segues into a fleshy, textural mid-palate defined by depth and purity of fruit, concluding with a long and penetrating finish.

Wine Advocate (98)

Unquestionably one of the glories of the vintage, the 2003 Musigny Vieilles Vignes brings forth a highly boisterous nose of spices, violets, roses, plums, blueberries, and black cherries. Deep, powerful, graceful, concentrated, and sensually textured, it slathers the mouth with plums, blueberries, and cherries. Notes of mocha are intermingled with licorice in its exquisitely long finish. This noble wine is crammed with tannin, yet it is sweet and ripe. Projected maturity: 2010-2025+.

Vinous (90-93)

(from a single unfrosted parcel on the mid-slope on the Vosne-Romanée side, the yield was 35 hectoliters per hectare in 2016): Dark red with ruby highlights. The nose displays a rather cool aspect as well as some spicy oak to the aromas of black cherry, licorice and botanical herbs. Densely packed and very ripe but a bit disorganized in the early going, even brutal, with its medicinal cassis, black cherry, herb and bitter chocolate flavors enlivened by pungent minerality. Today the tannins come across as a bit tough and drying. This wine finished its malolactic fermentation very late and Liger-Belair told me that he may bottle it last, as he did with the 2015 Clos Vougeot.

The 2018 La Romanée Grand Cru shows quite a bit of new oak on the nose at the moment and this slightly obscures the terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, beautifully structured, silky-smooth with palpable energy, tension and precision towards the finish. The aromatics might be entering a dumb phase, but the palate evidences a Grand Cru with serious ambition. This is an ethereal La Romanée that seems to care little for the summer heat of that year and just goes about its job. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

Vinous (92-94)

The 2019 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru, matured in a little more new oak than the Clos des Chênes (around one-third, according to Lafon), offers a quintessential Santenots nose of almost brazen blueberry and cassis aromas mixed with raspberry and violets. The palate is rounded on the entry and exerts a gentle grip. Opulent but controlled, though this year I find more nuance and sensuality on the Champans, which would be my pick of Lafon’s reds.

There are five instead of eight barrels of the 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru, which is still more than there will be next year. The 2018 Corton Grand Cru contains fruit from plots of replanted vines for the first time this year, and also 80% whole bunches. Bertrand de Villaine told me that the blending was done a little later than their other crus. Matured in 100% new oak, it has an attractive bouquet of brambly red fruit, blueberry and scents of crushed stone, all nicely detailed. The palate is taut on the entry with an almost chalky texture and notes of bitter cherries and black currants. Fine symmetry toward the finish. Excellent.

This is notably more floral as well as more restrained and what is interesting is that even though the violet-inflected fruit profile is just as ripe, it runs toward the red side of the spectrum while displaying a similar variety of spice components that includes a hint of sandalwood. This too is impressively constituted but despite the power and concentration the broad-shouldered flavors retain plenty of underlying tension as well as lovely precision before culminating in a massively long, balanced and harmonious if youthfully austere finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. By the usual standards of this wine I would not describe the 2015 version as massive though at the same time it is beautifully proportioned.

Vinous - Neal Martin (94-96)

The 2018 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru has the most intense bouquet of Dominique Lafon’s Volnays this year, intense black cherry scents intermingling with boysenberry and light cassis aromas, all delivered with the utmost detail. The palate offers black cherry and raspberry fruit infused with violets, very fine tannins and gentle grip. The silky-smooth finish fans out gloriously. Stunning.

This takes its time to open, revealing wild strawberry and black cherry scents entwined with hints of graphite and crushed stone. The palate is framed by very fine tannins, the palate sweet and concentrated with dark cherries, fig and damson. Gentle grip on the finish with very long length, this should give 20-30 years drinking pleasure.

The 2020 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru contains 30% whole bunch with 50% new oak. It has a vibrant, tightly wound bouquet with wet limestone/petrichor scents complementing the shimmering black cherry and orange zest scents. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannins, fine acidity, veering more towards the red fruit profile with a pinch of brown spices on the finish. Long in the mouth, very classy.

Excellent.

Burghound (95)

Burgundy is Pinot Noir’s spiritual home, and nowhere in the world better illustrates terroir than here. Two vineyards side by side result in wines with subtle yet intricate differences in structure and aromatic profile – and often not so subtle differences in price.
