The sheer density of fruit here is nothing short of remarkable and the complexity is equally amazing and words cannot really do justice to the breadth of aromas though it is worth noting that there is veritable profusion of the classic sauvage character of a fine Renardes along with notes of plum-like liqueur, earth and a smoky hint. This is a huge and powerful wine with overtly muscular flavors that ooze both minerality and tannin-buffering extract before culminating in a lavish finish of spectacular length. In my view, this is the finest Leroy Renardes since the unbelievable 1999.

Notes of cassis flowers, violets, earth and plenty of spice leads to medium weight flavors that possess a sophisticated mouth feel as the tannins are extremely fine-grained. There is good punch and delineation to the chiseled, intense and moderately austere finish that is not only exceptionally persistent but impeccably well-balanced. In sum, this is textbook Vignerondes with its refined yet tautly muscular palate impression.

The 2015 Aux Vignerondes is gracious and light on its feet, especially within the context of Nuits. There is quite a bit of power, too, but it is expressed in more of a linear style. Mineral, earth, smoke and cured meat overtones add myriad shades of nuance. Aromatically precise and beautifully delineated, the Vignerondes is another captivating wine in this remarkable range of 1er Crus from Lalou Bize-Leroy.

Translucent red cherry fruit and lifted aromatics make a strong first impression in the 2014 Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Allots. Beams of supporting tannin and a burst of saline-infused energy give the 2014 its shape. The 2014 is clearly still recovering from its bottling. Still, the wine's focus is admirable. The 2018 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru contains 30% whole clusters. It has a perfumed bouquet of blackberry, hints of cassis, crushed violet and touches of potpourri, very well defined and focused and delivering the intensity one expects from this growing season. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins and just the right amount of acidity. Wonderful harmony and composure here, gently unfolding toward a satin-textured finish that lingers long in the mouth. Bon vin!

All of the family's fruit is toward the bottom of Clos de B ze, around the "Ici Commence le Chambertin" sign and the stone hut, or la cabotte. Sultry and bold, this is packed with floral and branch notes, likely thanks in part to the 30% whole bunches. The palate follows on with black currants and a supremely firm wall of finely-grained tannins. There's crushed slate and grilled meat notes along with spice in spades on the long and notably refreshing finish. Don't rush to open this one. 2026-48

The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru had the highest sugar levels in this vintage, so this was the first cuvée to be picked on 24 August. It has a very expressive nose, very pure and without any stems, it still imparts an attractive spiciness. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, nicely poised with a harmonious and mineral-driven finish. Excellent.

The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a beautiful line of acidity, svelte and harmonious with a slightly grainy-textured finish. I adore the discrete crescendo in this Grand Cru and the unimposing but long aftertaste. "It’s been growing in stature over the last 10 to 15 years," remarked Alex Seysses. Juicy, intense and aromatic on the palate--youthfully imploded in a positive way. Projects compelling energy and subtle sweetness to its red berry and spice flavors. Dujac's 2017 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is more reserved that the Clos Saint-Denis, unwinding in the glass with scents of red berries, plums, orange rind, cinnamon, peonies and sweet soil tones. Sourced from what Burgundians often call 'Charmes-Charmes' to distinguish it from the Mazoyères part of this extensive Grand Cru, this cuvée uses fruit from five different parcels, all but one of which is 40 years' old. The 2019 Chambertin Grand Cru, under the négoce label, is a debut release from just 500 square meters of ancient vine acquired from a distant relative of the family; Pierre Duroché manages the vineyard and harvests the crop. This is aged in one new 150-liter barrel. It has a really entrancing bouquet that soars from the glass, offering pure red cherries, crushed strawberry, minerals and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, filigreed tannins. There is an unerring symmetry about this Chambertin, which is one of the best you will find in 2019. The persistence is astounding, though that is partially driven by the new wood. This will be fascinating to taste in bottle.

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru has a perfumed and enticing bouquet with brambly black fruit, black truffle and Earl Grey aromas gently wafting from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins. The whole bunch influence is discrete here but lends an attractive white pepper and clove note towards the finish that fans out wonderful whilst maintaining freshness and tension. Just outflanked by the Aux Malconsorts, nevertheless, this is a brilliant Les Beaux Monts.

Decanter (97)

Sourced from what Burgundians often call 'Charmes-Charmes' to distinguish it from the Mazoyères part of this extensive Grand Cru, this cuvée uses fruit from five different parcels, all but one of which is 40 years' old. Floral and intense, with 20% whole bunches adding some freshness and spice, this is a serious, well-upholstered Pinot Noir showing fine tannins and appealingly understated oak.

Vinous (96+)

Burgundy is Pinot Noir’s spiritual home, and nowhere in the world better illustrates terroir than here. Two vineyards side by side result in wines with subtle yet intricate differences in structure and aromatic profile – and often not so subtle differences in price.
