Wine Advocate (91-93)

The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Lavrottes is located in the north of the appellation that was less affected by the frost, so this was cropped at around 25 hectoliters per hectare. It was harvested toward the end of the harvest to gain concentration, includes 30% whole-bunch fruit and was raised in 50% new oak. I like the nose. Gentle at first, then opening its arms and revealing lovely redcurrant, cranberry and crushed strawberry aromas tinged with gravel. The palate is medium-bodied with fine but firm tannin, a fine bead of acidity and good structure—you can feel this gripping the mouth so that the saline finish is almost like a Morey-Saint-Denis. This is a great wine and it should provide longevity if you swing that way.

Wine Advocate (89-91)

The 2016 Chambolle-Musigny Clos le Village lost 40% of the production, less than others due to the protection of the church that lies in close proximity. Matured in 50% new oak, it has a clean and pure bouquet with Morello cherries, raspberry preserve and a touch of vanilla. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, the oak nicely integrated here and with good substance on the finish for a village cru. Merci à l'église!

Vinous (95)

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet of mixed red and black fruit and a faint touch of tomato vine. It becomes more floral with aeration. The palate has fine structure, and there’s some clever stem addition apparent here, lending this Clos Saint-Jacques a subtle leafy character. Focused with fine weight toward the finish, this is very persistent and quite saline on the aftertaste. Reserved, but the pedigree is undeniable. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

Medium deep crimson purple. A very floral bouquet, on first impression perhaps this Clos St-Jacques could use more precision. Sensual and succulent, dark raspberry and blackberry, the suggestion of stems (were some added back in?) add a little structure which is probably necessary as the tannins and acidity are not otherwise pronounced. Still a wine which will give great pleasure. Now I can find the precision at the back, allied to the charm. Drink from 2028.

Wine Advocate (94-96)

The 2014 Griottes Chambertin Grand Cru has a very intense bouquet with maraschino, blueberry and violets blossoming in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe black fruit, blueberry and a hint of balsamic, leading to a quite a structured and dense finish that just needs a touch more finesse. I think that will develop with time. Superb.

Fine purple, the nose flirts with breadstick volatile, unless that is the effect of the re addition of the stems. Pure red fruit, some plumpness, nothing overripe, just the light volatility. Fresh juicy finish. Tasted: December 2021

A background hint of wood easily allows the cool and equally pure essence of red currant, plum and violet scents to be appreciated. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the tautly muscular flavors that are also shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins on the balanced and lingering finale. This is a Bonnes Mares of refinement and finesse that should age well on a base of balance.

Vinous (94-96)

The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a tightly-wound nose that took time to open in the glass, touches of crushed rock filtering through the redcurrant and wild strawberry fruit. The palate is smooth and sensual, more density and sinew than the Echezeaux and a touch more salinity and energy on the finish. This should age well, but deserves three to four years in bottle.

Light to medium red, less nose than for the Echezeaux, but at least as much fruit on the palate with both more tannins and acidity. This may yet put on more weight in the rest of its elevage. More energy at the back. Drink from 2027-2033.

The 2016 La Grande Rue Grand Cru has a very pure, almost pastille-like bouquet with copious red cherry fruit mixed with crushed strawberry and a little cassis. La Grande Rue? [Post script: Bingo!] The palate is very pretty with fine-grain tannin. This is surfeit with freshness and vitality, although it does not quite have the depth and structure of other Grand Crus from the appellation. It does fan out towards the finish. The persistence, and the saline aftertaste are very appealing. Excellent. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

The 2017 La Grande Rue has a deep, introspective bouquet, offering more black fruit than red; touches of oyster shell and seaweed percolate through with time. The palate is where the quality shines through, in the filigreed tannins and the wonderful sense of symmetry. Fresh as a daisy without compromising intensity, especially on the pixelated finish, which seems to go on forever. Brilliant. This far exceeded my expectations. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

Vinous (93-95)

The 2018 La Grande Rue Grand Cru is the famous 1.65-hectare monopole of the domaine that runs parallel to Romanée-Conti and La Romanée on the other side of the road. It has a well-defined bouquet of dark cherries, raspberry, wild hedgerow and traces of Chinese tea, developing tertiary notes after a couple of minutes in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, a satin-like texture and just the right amount of acidity. The caressing, slightly gourmand finish displays hints of meat juices and a subtle savory aspect lends complexity. Very fine.

Perfect fresh mid red to purple in colour. There is an extra distinction to the bouquet, with a touch of spice and a little bit of blood orange. Very nuanced this year. Sweetly harmonious across the middle of the palate, iron-rich at the finish, supple and extremely persistent. Long, harmonious, with a silky touch.

Nicole is thrilled that La Grande Rue is producing at 80% of its capacity, even in this dry vintage. Of course, much less is made of this old vine cuv e – only two barrels. This has a touch more blush in its color than its counterpart. It's also showing some reduction so less perfumed at the moment. There's a strong flint note followed by pretty rose petals then sweet strawberries. The texture is marvellous, feeling of pure silk. Medium-bodied with integrated lift and soign  tannins, this is seriously stylish. 2022-40

The 2021 La Grande Rue Grand Cru comes from the famed 1.65-hectare monopole of Lamarche on the other side of the lane from Romanée-Conti. It has another light, airy nose, red cherries and a touch of tertiary scents, missing some of the vigour the 2020 exuded last year. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. This is very pure, a tad more weight than the Echézeaux, nicely judged acidity with hints of white pepper and thyme towards the nicely proportioned finish. This should give 12-15 years of drinking pleasure.

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a lifted morello cherry and red currant bouquet that is very pure and sensual, with beautifully integrated oak. The palate is energetic on the entry, silky-smooth in texture and displays a perfect line of acidity that binds this Les Suchots together. You can feel the light spicy touch lingering 30 seconds after the wine has departed. This is a very seductive wine that is going to be difficult to resist after bottling.

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru comes from 0.5811 hectares of vine (why not be accurate?) split over two plots on either side of the single-track road that traverses the vineyard. It has a delicate, floral bouquet of more of the pressed rose petal aromas one finds on the Vosne-Romanée Chaumes, though here a touch more orange pith and chalk emerges with time. The palate is medium-bodied with very supple tannins and fine acidity. A refined Suchots that eschews the opulent nature of this vineyard, aiming for something sleeker and more understated. There is a pleasant touch of black pepper right on the finish. Fine.

Burgundy is Pinot Noir’s spiritual home, and nowhere in the world better illustrates terroir than here. Two vineyards side by side result in wines with subtle yet intricate differences in structure and aromatic profile – and often not so subtle differences in price.
