Airy and weightless within the context of the year, the 2012 Volnay Les Caillerets is wonderfully complete and expressive. An exotic mélange of graphite, pencil shavings, white pepper and blue fruits takes shape in a precise, chiseled Burgundy that impresses for its finely cut texture and delineation. Totally vivid in the glass, the Caillerets dazzles from start to finish. This is a great example of the vintage at its very best.Inc. VAT£454.01 -

Invariably a highlight of the portfolio, Boillot's 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets derives from a low-yielding 60-are parcel of 55-year-old vines. Unfurling in the glass with a deep bouquet of wild berries, plums, raw cocoa and sweet soil tones, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, its concentrated core of vibrant fruit underlined by succulent acids and framed by chalky tannins. This is a brilliant wine that's worth a special effort to seek out.Inc. VAT£503.21 -

The 2018 Volnay 1er Cru Les Chevrets is showing beautifully, unfurling in the glass with aromas of cherries, rose petals, cassis and violets. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, with an ample chassis of powdery tannins, fine concentration and succulent acids. From a parcel of 58-year-old vines, this is a quintessentially elegant Volnay that should also drink well young.Inc. VAT£454.01 -
Vinous (93-95)
Violets, licorice, blueberries and graphite are some of the many notes that take shape in the 2012 Volnay Les Santenots. There is more than enough structure to support the fruit in a dramatic, large-scaled Burgundy that captures the essence of the year in its explosive personality. This intense, powerful Volnay need serious time in the cellar. A generous, beautifully resonant finish rounds things off.Inc. VAT£455.29 -
Burghound (88)
A more deeply pitched and markedly earthier nose reveals notes of both red and dark currant along with a hint of the sauvage. The rich, velvety and caressing medium weight flavors are almost easy-going and delicate on the delicious and lightly structured finale. This delicious effort is definitely not a classic Nuits but it’s attractive all the same.Inc. VAT£233.21 -

The 2017 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru matures in 50% new oak with 60% whole bunches from 45-year old vines that are Cordon pruned, although they are introducing some Guyot simple. It has a precocious bouquet with macerated dark cherries, blackcurrant and spicebox. The palate is dense and rather introverted. Perhaps here I would have liked just a little more delineation for it seems rather blocky and heavy on the finish. Afford this 5 to 7 years in bottle - hopefully it will lighten up.Inc. VAT£650.81 -

The 2018 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is beguiling and pure on the nose with perfumed red cherries, raspberry and cranberry - blossoming with aeration. The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis La Riotte 1er Cru comes from a parcel that suffers very little hydric stress, according to Laurent Lignier. Including 30% whole bunch and matured with 25% new oak, it has a harmonious bouquet of raspberry, wild strawberry and light sous-bois aromas. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity. Quite generous, with a lovely mineral-rich finish. Excellent.Inc. VAT£419.21 -

The 2013 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru les Malconsorts was the latest to finish its malolactic in mid-September. The nose has plenty of energy: red berry fruit, orange sorbet, wet limestone and fresh prune scents. The palate is primal with a dense body of red fruit. There is better weight here than the Suchots with more persistence on the peacock’s tail finish. Is this the Malconsorts of the vintage?Inc. VAT£1,346.81 -
Wine Advocate (94-96)
The 2016 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Malconsorts has a disarmingly beautiful nose with blackcurrant, briary and cold stone scents that offer great typicité. Likewise, the palate has a structure typical of this premier cru, denser and more mineral-driven than the Suchots, perhaps at the same time more aloof. But that is what you want from a Malconsorts and there is great precision on the long and tender finish. There is great potential here.Inc. VAT£1,075.61 -
Vinous (92-94)
The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru has a more refined, mineral-driven, slightly earthier bouquet compared to Les Suchots, offering a mixture of red and black fruit, bay leaf and a touch of baking powder. The palate is medium-bodied with a core of candied red fruit, quite plush and very sensual. Orange and mango notes permeate the lush, caressing finish. You could drink this now. One that will be too tempting once in bottle.Inc. VAT£1,410.41 -
Vinous (94-96)
The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Malconsorts 1er Cru is limited to two-and-a-half barrels this year, making it the domaine’s smallest cuvée, and only bottled in magnum. It has an earthy, loamy nose, almost peat-like, very well defined, with ample black fruit. The palate has sinew on the entry and great depth and assertiveness. Very complex and intellectual with that limestone terroir defining the very persistent finish. This is a wonderful Malconsorts for those who worship "proper" Burgundy.Inc. VAT£1,606.01 -

The 2015 Musigny Grand Cru offers compelling estuarine and oyster shell scents on a complex, extremely well focused nose. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple tannin, pure blackberry and raspberry fruit, and enthralling mineralité that seems to blossom toward the aristocratic finish. This is a fabulous wine, a Musigny flirting with perfection – and a serious contender for wine of the vintage. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.Inc. VAT£6,479.21 -
Wine Advocate (96-98)
The youngest of the vines informing Mugnier's 2005 Musigny just reached forty. This explodes from the glass with aromas of ripe cherry, blackberry, red currant, marzipan, diverse bitter-sweet florals and citrus zest. In the mouth, there is a palpable sense of sheer density yet weightlessness (once again putting me in mind of a great, red Riesling!) Almost implosively fresh fruit concentration is layered with tactile notes of citrus zest and chalky minerality, veal-stock richness, pungent spices, and an armload of flowers. (The 2004, incidentally, is effusive and juicy in personality, with superb penetration and refined length.)Inc. VAT£876.00 -
Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-94)
Good medium red. Wild red fruits, cinnamon, cocoa and flowers on the nose. Less silky than the wines from Chambolle but dense, sappy and energetic, and quite fine and perfumed in the mid-palate for Nuits Saint Georges. Very firmly structured wine with serious building tannins that currently cut off the fruit. This should develop gracefully. Mugnier made an approximation of the final blend by combining samples from each lot, noting that there will probably not be a Clos des Fourches in 2010 as the quality of the grapes was consistently high.Inc.
