Vinous (99)The 2015 Musigny Grand Cru offers compelling estuarine and oyster shell scents on a complex, extremely well focused nose. Wine Advocate (96-98)The youngest of the vines informing Mugnier's 2005 Musigny just reached forty. This explodes from the glass with aromas of ripe cherry, blackberry, red currant, marzipan, diverse bitter-sweet florals and citrus zest. In the mouth, there is a palpable sense of sheer density yet weightlessness (once again putting me in mind of a great, red Riesling!) Almost implosively fresh fruit concentration is layered with tactile notes of citrus zest and chalky minerality, veal-stock richness, pungent spices, and an armload of flowers. (The 2004, incidentally, is effusive and juicy in personality, with superb penetration and refined length.) |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (91-94)Good medium red. Wild red fruits, cinnamon, cocoa and flowers on the nose. Less silky than the wines from Chambolle but dense, sappy and energetic, and quite fine and perfumed in the mid-palate for Nuits Saint Georges. Very firmly structured wine with serious building tannins that currently cut off the fruit. This should develop gracefully. Mugnier made an approximation of the final blend by combining samples from each lot, noting that there will probably not be a Clos des Fourches in 2010 as the quality of the grapes was consistently high. |

Vinous (90-92)The 2018 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos de la Maréchale 1er Cru was tasted from a blend of five cuvées. It has an attractive bouquet of mainly black fruit laced with black tea and bay leaf notes, plus touches of rose petal in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, tending more toward a red fruit profile, with wonderful salinity on the finish. Good potential. Excellent. |

Vinous (93-95)The 2018 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru showed just a little reduction on the nose, but that blows away with modest swirling to reveal blackberries, raspberry coulis, touches of melted tar and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip. It displays a fine crescendo in the mouth, until it reaches the effervescent finish. A tang of blood orange and brown spice lingers on the aftertaste. |

Vinous (94)The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru has an attractive nose of brambly red fruit, orange rind, sous-bois and a touch of wilted rose petal. The palate is medium-bodied with furry tannins, plenty of dusky red berry fruit with white pepper and sage. Fine weight, perhaps a little rustic towards the finish but it gains weight and coheres with aeration. Give this another couple of years in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting. |

Jancis Robinson (18)60 m difference in height between the top and the bottom of the Clos. 50% new and 50% second-use barrel. 90% whole bunch (some years 100%). Will be racked to tank at the end of December. Once in cuve it is stable so there is no hurry to bottle. Must have at least a month in tank to stabilise so they will bottle February –April. Bottling best in March or October – never too cold or hot. No filtration. They bottle with descending moon when the wine is more still. Beautifully, darkly aromatic with plenty of peppery spice. Woody rather than oaky. There’s freshness from the tannins as well as from the acidity and the texture is so silky on the mid palate yet with power on the finish. Refined, flowing, dry and long. Handsome beauty and so easy to taste even with the underlying intensity and power. There’s just a very slight hint of stems but not OTT. Dark elegance. |

Decanter (98)This definitely represents a new beginning for the Clos des Lambrays, beginning with a dizzying array of aromas that range from high-toned red fruits to ripe, plummy black fruit, all touched with spice, and a suggestion of wild herbs and fresh flowers. After blending there was an average of 80% whole cluster fermentation. The texture on the palate is concentrated but not heavy, and there is a charming, silky aspect to it so, despite the tannin and density, the overall impression is one of finesse and elegance. |
