Burghound (97)
A brilliantly discreet spicy nose consists of sandalwood, essence of black cherry liqueur, violets and a hint of the sauvage. There is seriously good size, weight and power to the imposingly scaled flavors that display almost painful intensity on the driving, explosively long and very firmly structured finish where a pleasing bead of minerality appears which helps to add lift to the finish. This is powerful and presently quite compact yet my sense is that despite being very tightly wound today, it should progressively unfold such that in 7 to 8 years, it may be sufficiently civilized to enjoy if you don't wish to wait for its full maturity.Inc. The 2015 Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru is spectacular, wafting from the glass with a dramatic bouquet of sweet grilled meat, red and black fruit, candied peel and rich soil. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, ample and powerful, with a lavishly gourmand attack that evokes the 2009 rendition, but this quickly segues into the mid-palate of an altogether more tautly structural, serious wine, its considerable dimension and concentration underwritten by racy acids. The finish is long and firm. This is a monumental Clos de Bèze built for the long haul.Inc. VAT£4,084.40 -

Here too there is just enough wood in evidence to mention on the gorgeously spiced and intricately layered aromas of essence of red currant, floral, plum, earth and a whisper of the sauvage. Once again the mouthfeel of the notably more imposingly-scaled flavors is sleek with excellent minerality that really comes up on the super-saline finish that goes on and on. But what I really admire about the '16 Bèze is the texture because it's at once muscular yet highly seductive and refined. This is a very, very powerful wine that is seriously impressive in every respect. In a word, brilliant.Inc. VAT£2,961.20 -

While the wood treatment is certainly evident it's more subtle on the overtly cool and restrained nose that is markedly spicy with its combination of relatively high-toned aromas of red cherry, raspberry, rose petal and a suggestion of earth. There is excellent power and punch to the large-scaled flavors that are a combination of power and refinement while being blessed with an abundance of sappy dry extract that imparts a seductive quality to the mouth coating, hugely long and very firmly structured finish. It's going to be interesting in 25 or 30 years' time to see which of these is the better wine, assuming that one of them will be!Inc. VAT£8,650.01 -

The 2018 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a very well-defined bouquet of red berry fruit laced with undergrowth, rose petals, incense and hints of white pepper; so much vigor here. The palate is medium-bodied with filigreed tannins, wonderful tension and great length on the finish. This is a class apart, an intellectual and downright delicious Chambertin that will surely gain even more sophistication during its second winter in barrel. Awesome.Inc. VAT£8,879.21 -
Vinous (97-99)
The 2019 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru clearly has more intensity than the Chambertin. True, it is showing a little more wood at the moment, but I also find more fruit – raspberry and wild strawberry – interlaced with shavings of black truffle and forest fern. The palate is medium-bodied with supple but firm tannins. This is endowed with impressive depth and body weight and yet it retains disarming elegance on a finish that fans out gloriously. "This is the business" is the phrase that passed through my mind as I tried to keep a stoic face after encountering this fabulous Clos-de-Bèze.Inc. VAT£4,042.40 -
Vinous (98-100)
The 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has an even more complex bouquet than the Chambertin - a quite profound, quite riveting cornucopia of red berry fruit, sous-bois and crushed stone all delivered with breathtaking delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grain tannins, perhaps more saline than the Chambertin, wonderful acidity with real depth and structure towards the finish that already feels extremely persistent. Potential wine of the vintage, right here.Inc. VAT£6,516.80 -
Vinous (96-98)
The 2021 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru is so much more expressive on the nose compared to the Chambertin (which is a cooler terroir due to the clay, its location next to the combe and adjacent to the frost). Shimmering red fruit, crushed stone, orange pith and pressed iris petals make up the bouquet. You could lose yourself in these aromas. The palate is beautifully balanced with fine-boned tannins. This is tensile, mineral-driven, nicely poised and exuberant, with a sensual and pixelated finish. This just drives home its class. Brilliant.Inc. VAT£2,420.65 -

Wine Advocate (91-93)
The 2009 Charmes-Chambertin emerges from the glass with lovely radiance and openness in its ripe, juicy fruit. The Charmes is already rather forward, and at this stage appears to be a relatively early-maturing wine. The oak is also a bit pronounced. Sweet, textured floral notes wrap around the long, polished finish. Rousseau’s Charmes is technically 60% Mazoyeres. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2029.Inc. VAT£8,061.64 -

Red stone fruits, plums, menthol, rose petals and spices take shape nicely in the 2011 Charmes-Chambertin. In 2011, the Charmes-Chambertin is a bit savory and herbal, but it otherswise shows lovely balance and terrific overall depth in a pliant, mid-weight style that is best enjoyed over the next 10-15 years.Inc. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting in Beaune, the 2013 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a well defined and quite earthy bouquet, plenty of sous-bois character here, gently unfolding in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit, fine tannins and a harmonious, caressing finish that demonstrates assiduous use of new oak. Everything just seems to effortless in this delightful Charmes-Chambertin from Armand Rousseau. Tasted September 2016.Inc. VAT£5,919.64 -
Wine Spectator (96)
Notes of dusty cherry, currant and leafy underbrush are the highlights of this tightly wound red, which is not giving much today, yet there is a center of sweet berry fruit. The fine aftertaste is fresh and resonant, with refined tannins. Best from 2022 through 2040.Inc. VAT£1,352.00 -
Wine Spectator (95)
Flavors of spice, floral, tobacco and mineral swirl around the core of cherry in this intense, vivid red. The dusty tannins quickly assert themselves, yet the fruit, spice and mineral elements hold fast. Offers a tangy, mouthwatering finish. Vinous (93)
The 2016 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a sultry, earthy bouquet with touches of oyster shell coming through with aeration. It never quite kicks into fifth gear though. The palate is medium-bodied with supple red berry fruit laced with orange rind and brown spices. It gains more complexity and nuance towards the finish with an attractive saline aftertaste. Not the most memorable Charmes-Chambertin that I have encountered, but there is no denying that it is very well crafted. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.Inc. VAT£6,589.24 -
Vinous (93-95)
The 2017 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a very precise and focused bouquet, almost the epitome of transparency and utterly encapsulating. There is real mineralité here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, very tensile from the start with tart red cherries, Japanese yuzu and orange zest that fans out beautifully on the finish. This is a Charmes-Chambertin with a skip in its step.Inc. VAT£5,584.84 -
Jancis Robinson (18)
Scented, red fruited, open. Then as it opens in the glass, it seems to become darker and more minerally, with stony finesse even with all this fruit. Lots of tension on the palate, partly from the freshness and partly from the tannins, which are dry and extremely fine. A caress with a firm hand. Then sweet again on the finish. On the finish this is long but seemingly gentle.Inc. VAT£1,112.40 -

The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is very perfumed on the nose of rose-petal-infused red berry fruit, although I would like to see more complexity develop in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with candied red fruit on the entry, orange zest, and light, almost peachy notes that I would associate with a white wine. It does not possess the substance or grip of Rousseau’s other cuvées, although it does deliver a lovely silky texture and fine length.Inc. VAT£1,049.60 -

The 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a mixture of red and black fruit, beautifully delineated, hints of blood orange and crushed stone percolating through with aeration. Again, there is just the right sapidity on the finish. Superb.Inc. VAT£1,088.00 -

A discreet application of wood frames pure aromas of red cherries, just turned earth and a floral top note.
