  • Arnaud Ente Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots du Milieu 2015 (10x75cl)

    Vinous (91)

The 2015 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru has a clenched fist of a nose; the aromas are there, but it is almost as if this Volnay wants to keep the aromatics for itself instead of bestowing them upon the imbiber. Perhaps the best adjective is “selfish.” The palate is very well balanced with fine tannin and well-judged acidity that lends tension and energy, but remains very linear and strict in style. This is a Volnay that clearly refuses to come out and play at such a young age, and yet I suspect that it will mature into a very fine specimen with bottle age. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

  • Arnaud Mortet Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2017 (3x75cl)
  • Arnaud Mortet Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2019 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94-96)

The 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a very well defined, quite vivid bouquet with blueberry, loganberry, pitted black olive and light sea spray aromas. This is one of the best aromatics that I have encountered from this Grand Cru in 2019. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit. It is actually quite "Mazis" in style thanks to the structure, though it closes down a touch towards the almost surly finish. This is a "serious" Charmes-Chambertin from Arnaud Mortet that deserves several years in bottle.

  • Arnaud Mortet Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2020 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, 50% whole bunch and 50% new oak, has an elegant bouquet that is cut from a different cloth compared to the Mazoyères that Mortet insisted should be vinified separately as they are two different terroirs. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannins, fine balanced, maybe not quite as sophisticated or as nuanced as the Mazoyères yet certainly long.

    Vinous (89-91)

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin La Perrière 1er Cru, which is 50% whole bunches (pédicelles), has an open, earthy, slightly mulchy bouquet with light red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with granular tannins, more black than red fruit, very nicely defined though it just lacks a bit of length on the finish.

  • Arnaud Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux St Jacques 2018 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (90-92)

Using 70% whole bunch to compare with the domaine example, the 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is defined by those stems on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied and comes across more peppery than the domaine version, quite defined but maybe without the sensuality of the domaine.

    Vinous (95)

The 2016 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru is the darkest of four wines tasted from this vineyard. It has a very seductive bouquet with pure dark cherry and plummy fruit, some high quality new oak that is neatly enmeshed. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins, well-judged acidity, perhaps more modern in style than its peers, but you cannot deny the precision, the delineation and mineralité in the finish. Great persistence here, a Mazoyères with pedigree. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

  • Arnaud Ente Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots du Milieu 2018 (6x75cl)

Impeccably crafted by the revered winegrower Arnaud Ente, the Arnaud Ente Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots du Milieu 2018 is exquisite. Sourced from vines in the heart of Burgundy's Côte de Beaune, situated within the 'Volnay-Santenots' 1er cru appellation, Ente’s viticultural philosophy respects the inherent terroir, exuding a blend of expertise and patience. Threading the needle between traditional and modern winemaking techniques, Ente prefers biodynamic practices, hand-harvesting and natural fermentation to maintain each grape's authenticity. This stellar vintage presents an irresistible balance of red cherry and plum flavours accentuated by subtle nuances of spice. The plush fruit core is shaped by a robust, mineral-inflected structure, paving way for a tantalising, sensuous finish. Renowned for its scarcity and uncompromisingly high quality, the Arnaud Ente Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots du Milieu 2018 epitomises the beguiling allure of fine French Pinot Noir. A symphony for the senses, this laudable wine is a testament to Ente's hallmarks of excellence.
