  • Arlaud Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2022 (3x150cl)

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)

A bright fresh mid purple. The bouquet is superb, in a really lush and almost creamy red berry fruit, not as wild as some until a little savoury touch at the finish. Complex, a fine weave to the texture, with pure red berry fruit coming out at the finish. Despite its location I tend to think of Bonnes Mares as a Morey style Grand Cru, but you can certainly see the touch of Chambolle in this. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023.

A fine even purple. A nose of charm and delicious, adequately ripe, dark red fruit. Energetic fruit, with a touch of sandalwood, tightly wound with quite high acidity. Just slightly dry at the finish, though compensated by surprising length. Drink from 2024-2026.

  • Arlaud Bourgogne Rouge Roncevie 2022 (6x75cl)

    Burghound (86-89)

Outstanding Top Value. A wonderfully fresh and ripe nose combines notes of red currant, plum and a whisper of earth. The sleek, delicious and vibrant middleweight flavors terminate in an inviting and refreshing if lightly rustic finish. This is very good for its level plus it offers short to mid-term aging potential.

  • Arlaud Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Chatelots 2022 (3x150cl)

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-95)

Tressage here, no tractor for years so as to avoid compacting the very light soil. One barrel, magnums only. Mid ruby with clearly a riper more perfumed style of fruit. Even a slight plum note to the perfume, then stonier and more saline on the palate. The fruit leaves a sweet impression in the mouth. Super fruit concentration behind. Drink from 2030-2036. • Arlaud Chambolle-Musigny 2019 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (89-91)

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Village comes mainly from La Bussières, Les Herbues and two or three others. I love the delineation and precision here, very focused with a minerally undertow. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly peppery opening. You might misconstrue there being whole bunches thanks to the light peppery finish (there is nonw). It is a quality Village Cru from Arlaud that should give a decade pleasure of more.

  • Arlaud Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2018 (1x300cl)

    Decanter (96)

Cyprien Arlaud's vines cover a total of 1ha in Mazoyères, just below Latricières-Chambertin. Picked in three stages to maximise complexity, this was fermented with 30% whole bunches and aged in 20% new wood. It's right up there with the best expressions of the Grand Cru in 2018, marrying texture and weight to finesse and balance in a Pinot that caresses the palate with red cherry and raspberry fruit.

I think this may be 14+ too (but it is not apparently). It comes over fresher on the palate and certainly with a most astonishing intensity. The wine is beautifully discreet on the palate, but it is all there. Not super concentrated but detailed, precise and entirely in balance. The 2022 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru has darker fruit on the nose than the Clos de la Roche: blackberry and bilberry, crushed violet, and plenty of forest floor commingling with light granitic scents. The terroir really shines through here. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins, very harmonious with a cashmere texture. There’s impressive weight on the finish with outstanding tension. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, sweet and candied with blueberry and cassis notes towards the sensual finish. • Arlaud Clos-Saint-Denis Grand Cru 2022 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (96-98)

The 2022 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru has darker fruit on the nose than the Clos de la Roche: blackberry and bilberry, crushed violet, and plenty of forest floor commingling with light granitic scents. The terroir really shines through here. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins, very harmonious with a cashmere texture. There’s impressive weight on the finish with outstanding tension. I thought the 2021 was a knockout last year… This is, too.

  • Arlaud Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combottes 2019 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru really captures the complexity and intellectual capacity of this propitious Premier Cru with beautifully defined, mineral-driven black fruit, touches of freshly rolled tobacco developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, sweet and candied with blueberry and cassis notes towards the sensual finish. It is a powerful Aux Combottes that just needs to evolve a touch more restraint and Pinoté, though that will develop with cellaring.

  • Arlaud Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Combottes 2022 (3x150cl)

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-97)

5 Star Wine. Mid purple in colour. A sublime elegance to the nose, graceful refined yet still full of energy. Floral on top of ripe red berries. Perfectly judged ripeness. There is so much intensity here yet produced with a really fine hand, very persistent indeed, and seemingly effortless. The refined tannins are entirely hidden. Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted: November 2023.

  • Arlaud Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru Millandes 2020 (6x75cl)

    Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (92-94)

Fresh dark purple, a mild reduction, a wine of elegance and charm on the palate with a surprisingly peppery finish. Almost exotic Asian spices. The fruit itself spreads beautifully across the palate, a mix of red and black. Tasted: December 2021

  • Arlaud Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru Millandes 2021 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (91-93)

The 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes 1er Cru has impressive definition on the nose with blackberry, raspberry and crushed limestone. The palate is very well balanced with quite saturated tannins, fine-boned and finessed with a touch of kirsch and blood orange on the finish. Excellent.

  • Arlaud Morey Saint Denis 1er Cru Millandes 2022 (6x75cl)

    Burghound (91-94)

A discreet application of wood sets off the softly spicy and earthy aromas of violet, lavender plum and red currant. The powerful and markedly more concentrated broad-shouldered flavors exude a subtle minerality on the succulent yet very firmly structured finale that exhibits excellent length. Patience will be necessary but it should be well-rewarded in time as this is packed with development potential.

  • Arlaud Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Blanchards 2021 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Blanchards 1er Cru, which contains just over 30% whole bunches, has a little more mineral expression than the Les Millandes, focus and precise. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, very citrus fresh, blood orange and tangerine towards the grainy finish. This is very promising.

  • Arlaud Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Ruchots 2018 (1x300cl)

    Vinous (89-91)

The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Ruchots 1er Cru is matured with 30% whole bunch and up to 20% new oak. This has a fragrant and more floral bouquet compared to the Aux Chesaux, incense and pressed violets emerging with aeration, along with a slight meaty character. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, quite dense and well defined. The slightly sinewy finish will demand a few years to soften. Maybe I am seeking more charm in this Morey-Saint-Denis.

  • Arlaud Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Ruchots 2019 (1x300cl)

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Ruchots 1er Cru is elegant and refined on the nose, a mixture of blackberry, sous-bois and a light sea spray aroma. It just needs to gel together and it should do during the remainder of its barrel maturation. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. Very Morey in style with a sense of conservatism and linearity on the white pepper-dashed finish, I appreciate its persistence in the mouth. Cellar this for 4-5 years.

  • Arlaud Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Ruchots 2021 (3x75cl)

    Vinous (93-95)

The 2021 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Ruchots 1er Cru is more introspective at the moment, with fine intensity, the fruit is darker than the Aux Chezaux, with hints of graphite in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins, one of the "juiciest" Moreys that I have encountered with candied orange peel and spicebox on the finish. Superb.

Burgundy is Pinot Noir’s spiritual home, and nowhere in the world better illustrates terroir than here. Two vineyards side by side result in wines with subtle yet intricate differences in structure and aromatic profile – and often not so subtle differences in price.
