The 2016 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Faconnières 1er Cru has a comparatively light bouquet with earthy red and black fruit, hints of tobacco coming through with aeration. The palate is quite refined, nicely balanced, and fleshy for a Morey-Saint-Denis. A touch of bitter red fruit on the finish. The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis Faconnières 1er Cru is backward on the nose with blackcurrant and raspberry fruit, not complex and maybe showing some overripeness compared to its peers (indeed, it bears semblance to the Chambolles in 2018). There is some brettanomyces here. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, quite muscular in style but there is a nagging greenness that juts out on the aftertaste. Perhaps some fruit that did not attain phenolic ripeness? Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2018 red tasting.

The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis Village offers simple red berries on the nose, along with a slight metallic tincture that will hopefully ebb with time. The well-balanced palate opens supple and quite fleshy, featuring sweet red cherries and candied orange peel. Lithe and precise, with a touch of white pepper toward the finish. Enjoy over the next six to eight years.

  • Tortochot Morey-Saint-Denis 2018 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (88)

The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis Village has a rather high-toned bouquet that calms down with aeration to reveal vivacious dark cherry and bergamot aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, firm grip and a solid, quite sinewy finish. Give it two to four years in bottle.

Burgundy is Pinot Noir’s spiritual home, and nowhere in the world better illustrates terroir than here. Two vineyards side by side result in wines with subtle yet intricate differences in structure and aromatic profile – and often not so subtle differences in price.
