The 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis Faconnières 1er Cru is backward on the nose with blackcurrant and raspberry fruit, not complex and maybe showing some overripeness compared to its peers (indeed, it bears semblance to the Chambolles in 2018). There is some brettanomyces here. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, quite muscular in style but there is a nagging greenness that juts out on the aftertaste. The 2014 Morey-Saint-Denis La Riotte 1er Cru has opened up a little since I last tasted it, offering crushed strawberry and Morello scents, crushed stone and a touch of tomato leaf. This is so fresh and open that you are tempted to drink it now. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, a silver bead of acidity and much greater precision than previous vintages.
