Vinous (91)The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru feels a little muddled on the nose, just a touch of reduction that blows away, a little fiery compared to its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, harmonious and smooth in texture. There is just a touch of volatility that I notice on the finish, although it is at a level that can be countenanced and lends a needed kick. Not a faultless Clos de Vougeot, but it has charm. The bouquet is quite showy and gregarious, featuring copious black cherry, liquorish and light furniture polish scents. The new oak is too forward for my own preference. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a little drier and more conservative than I hoped, and there is a bitter residue on the aftertaste. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting. |

There is a massive structure here to build on, but it is all about the intensity of the fruit. Deep red not black, almost as thrilling as the 2020 Echezeaux. Waves more fruit come flooding back across the palate, with everything in perfect proportion. Drink from 2032-2040+. Tasted: November 2023. |
