A pretty and very fresh if quite restrained nose is composed by notes of plum, dark cherry and discreet wood nuances. There is outstanding richness to the round and admirably pure big-bodied flavors that possess impressive mid-palate concentration while concluding in a markedly firm, dusty, mouth coating and moderately austere finish that delivers seriously good length. Patience required though.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (93-95)

When the Boillots’ previous source started to bottle his own wines in 2015, it was necessary to switch to another source which seems to be equally good. Rich deep purple black. This is certainly ripe, perhaps even a gamey quality. Freshens up in the glass. Huge fruit weight here, dark notes but actually a core of pure red fruit beneath. Strong but fine tannins, this is going to be quite impressive. Tasted: 10/1/2021

The 2021 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru (from Grand Maupertuis) is bright, piercing and crystalline. This is a very pretty wine, but it needs to be appreciated on its own terms. Dark red. Deep blackberry and candied plum aromas give an impression of perfect ripeness. Silky-smooth on the palate, with strikingly pure and vibrant flavors of sweet blackberry and cassis. Gains ripeness on the finish, which features seemingly invisible tannins and outstanding length. Here's another '02 that's utterly delicious now but will be even better for more cellaring.

Vinous (93)

Good medium red. Reduced, slightly decadent aromas of strawberry, spices, underbrush and game: this could only be Burgundy! Seriously silky, pliant and glyceral, with a lightly liqueur-like quality to the plush flavors of red fruits and spices. Quite sweet on entry, then more restrained on the back half. Finishes concentrated, spicy and long, with broad, suave tannins and terrific spicy persistence. A major mouthful in the context of the year.

Decanter (95)

Hudelot-Noëllat's 0.8ha holding is made up of two parcels, both of them in the best bit of the Grand Cru. Aged in 40% new wood, this is a not a blockbuster style by any means, emphasising freshness, balance and harmony instead. Floral, racy and supple, it has well-integrated 40% new wood, some vanilla spice and a poised, elegant finish.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (95-98)

(5 Star Wine) 8.5 barrels instead of 13. Dense, black purple here, nose suggests depth power and quality without detail. This is really fine on the palate with a starburst of energy, not too ripe at all with some raspberry essence taking the lead. Tannins and acidity in perfect balance, properly persistent. Very fine this year!

Vinous (94-96)

The 2020 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a very well-defined bouquet, quite mineral-driven with crushed rock and pressed iris flower combined with dark cherry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, fine acidity, very focused with quite a strict and saline finish. There is a sense of class here and it has the substance to age well in bottle.

Vinous (93-95)

The 2021 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru is quite open and aromatic on the nose with bright red and black fruit, iris flower and touches of blue fruit. The palate is beautifully balanced with a very fine bead of acidity, blood orange and savoury notes. Quite good backbone here, a Clos de Vougeot that deserves cellaring.

Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy (94-96)

A vivid mid purple. The bouquet suggests some concentration but a youthful hiding of the detail. On the palate, this is clearly extremely well-constructed and the deep red fruit fills the mouth. Tannins are fine boned, and there is enough acidity. Let this age quietly for a decade and a fine Clos V will emerge. Drink from 2032-2040.

Vinous (90-92)

The 2017 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru includes 20% whole bunches this year. It has a slight mintiness on the nose, quite generous if not as complex as the Corton-Bressandes tasted alongside. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, quite strict and fresh with a chalky texture, and a slightly curmudgeonly finish. Give this three to four years in bottle to lighten up.

Vinous (90-92)

The 2018 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is matured with 35% whole bunch and 60% new oak. It has a slightly opaque bouquet, closed and not ready to come out and play at this early stage. The palate is grippy on the entry and quite oaky, and the wood tannins feel a little intrusive toward the finish. Hopefully this will meld together with bottle age, but this year I prefer the Corton-Bressandes tasted alongside.

Tim Atkin MW (95)

This is a captivating Clos Vougeot with a vibrant bouquet and excellent energy. Mulberries, chocolate and smoky minerality flood the palate. Smooth tannins and mouth-watering lift make this a surprisingly accessible Clos Vougeot. These 1 hectare 28 ares of vines sit in the lower portion of the middle section near Ch teau de la Tour. 2024-40

The 2015 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru has a detailed, precise bouquet, very pure with ripe dark cherries, kirsch, orange sorbet and subtle graphite aromas. It is one of the classiest that you will come across from this ancient vineyard this year. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe tannin that feel a little fuller and suppler than the premier cru Vosne-Romanées. Grippy in the mouth with an effervescent finish, this is a long-term Clos de Vougeot that will age effortlessly over 20-30 years.
