Bright medium red. Wild perfume of strawberry, raspberry, pepper, caramel and earth. Lovely precision and lift to the tangy raspberry, cherry and spice flavors complicated by saline minerality. Quite tight today, showing a restrained sweetness. Finishes with firm-edged, slightly tough tannins and excellent length. A very good vintage for this grand cru blend.

The 2017 Corton Grand Cru is floral, gracious and so inviting. White pepper, mint and pine perk up the red cherry and cranberry fruit flavors nicely. In 2017, the Corton is decidedly ethereal and pointed, with terrific energy and tons of class. It will be interesting to see how it develops, as there is a good deal of structure beneath. Even in the short time I was able to follow it in this tasting, the Corton opened up very nicely. This fruit was brought in on September 4, and was the domaine’s first pick.

The 2018 Corton Grand Cru contains fruit from plots of replanted vines for the first time this year, and also 80% whole bunches. Bertrand de Villaine told me that the blending was done a little later than their other crus. Matured in 100% new oak, it has an attractive bouquet of brambly red fruit, blueberry and scents of crushed stone, all nicely detailed. The palate is taut on the entry with an almost chalky texture and notes of bitter cherries and black currants. Fine symmetry toward the finish. Excellent.

The 2019 Corton Grand Cru is a big, rich wine that announces the vintage in style. Black cherry, plum and lavender are some of the many notes that are dialed up in the 2019. This is an especially somber, almost brooding Corton with a good deal of lift from the whole clusters that lends verve and energy. Hints of incense, dried herbs and gravel build into the heady finish. Stem influence is a bit more pronounced here than it is in the other wines, but the overall impression is of a Burgundy that marries elegance with power. Yields were just 15 hectoliters per hectare.

The 2020 Corton Grand Cru is the usual blend from Clos du Roi (Bressandes and Les Renardes leased from the Prince de Mérode family), and it was picked on 26 August at 24.6hL/ha. This is focused and a little backward on the nose; it needs a little encouragement from the glass. It rewards patience with subtle potpourri and incense aromas. An orange rind touch complements the dark berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins and a satisfying degree of edginess and delineation. Sour cherry nuances underlie the carapace of higher-toned blue fruit with a persistent and succulent finish. Maybe it just needs a little more mineralité on the aftertaste, nevertheless, it remains a fine Corton that will give 20 years of drinking pleasure. 454 cases produced. Tasted at Corney & Barrow’s annual in bottle tasting in London.

The sheer density of fruit here is nothing short of remarkable and the complexity is equally amazing and words cannot really do justice to the breadth of aromas though it is worth noting that there is veritable profusion of the classic sauvage character of a fine Renardes along with notes of plum-like liqueur, earth and a smoky hint. This is a huge and powerful wine with overtly muscular flavors that ooze both minerality and tannin-buffering extract before culminating in a lavish finish of spectacular length. In my view, this is the finest Leroy Renardes since the unbelievable 1999.

As is always the case, the Corton-Renardes is up first. A huge, explosive wine, the 2015 exudes strength, power and muscle. Swaths of tannin wrap around a core of black fruit. Hints of smoke, iron and incense add layers of nuance and overall complexity. Even so, the natural rusticity of Corton-Renardes comes through loud and clear.

Vinous (94)

Impressively youthful saturated dark red color. Deep, brooding aromas of black fruits, violet, licorice and tobacco reminded me of Bordeaux, if not Pauillac. Hugely rich, tactile and mouthfilling, with its fleshy black cherry and violet flavors conveying a strong impression of inky depth without coming across as heavy. A classically dry, medicinal grand cru in a distinctly masculine style, this has the stuffing and structure to last 50 years. Spreads out horizontally on the back end, finishing with building ripe, dusty tannins and palate-staining length. Not the last word in finesse but this is an uncanny powerhouse of a Burgundy. Fans of the style may rate it even higher than I do. (13.2% alcohol; 3.33 pH; 3.6 g/l acidity)

Good full medium red with an amber edge. Alluring, complex scents of black plum, black raspberry, graphite, violet, dried rose, licorice and musky underbrush, plus some subtle veggie notes of celery seed and beefsteak tomato. Rich, chewy, layered wine without any corners, offering a sexy subtle sweetness and leavening salty minerality to its flavors of dark fruits, flowers and spices complicated by game and underbrush. The wine's broad tannins dust the front teeth on the very long finish. À point right now; in fact, this turned a tad dry with aeration. This fruit was picked at the beginning of October, as in 1995 and 1999. (13.4% alcohol; 3.36 pH; 3.6 g/l acidity)

Healthy full medium red. Spectacular fully ripe aromas of blackberry, black cherry, graphite and minerals. Intense on entry, then sappy, penetrating and powerful in the middle palate, with its black and red fruit and mineral flavors delivering superb concentration for this generous vintage, without any impression of heaviness. This compellingly dense wine delivers hillside notes of dried flowers, spices and soil and is still incredibly youthful. The substantial, somewhat Barolo-like tannins arrive late and avoid dryness, with the finish displaying terrific verve and building length. Corton loves the '9 vintages, noted Erwan Faiveley. These vines were harvested beginning on October 1. (13.4% alcohol; 3.38 pH; 3.8 g/l acidity)

The same can't be said about the Faiveley's 2002 Corton Clos des Cortons, which was tight and imposing from the very first taste. Still, it was impossible to miss the wine's huge center of fruit, phenomenal balance and massive potential for the future. What a gorgeous wine!

Vinous (91+)

Very deep red, by far the darkest in the tasting; showing no amber yet. Bordeaux-like nose combines redcurrant, black raspberry, graphite, mocha, cedar, licorice, mint and bouquet garni; it's hard to recognize Burgundy here (Jérôme Flous noted that we feared that 2018 would be like 2003 but we were saved by having a lot of moisture in the soil). A medicinal, mouthfilling monster with its black fruit and menthol flavors conveying a distinctly southern dried-fruit and Provençal herb character. Today the finish is cut off by palate-shattering tannins. Erwan Faiveley describes this as one of the biggest Burgundies I've ever tasted, noting that its IPT (indice de polyphénols totaux) is 130, which is off the charts. And I recall that when François Faiveley first showed me this wine from barrel in late 2004 (he bottled it early, in December of that year), he predicted that it would need at least 15 years of bottle aging; that has turned out to be an understatement. In fact, I wonder if this bulletproof wine will ever truly be easy to drink. I'm not sure if I would have pegged it blind as Pinot Noir. (This wine weighs in at 14.4% alcohol, while the rest of the vintages in this tasting are typically between 13.2% and 13.7%; 3.57 pH; 3.5 g/l acidity; from a harvest that began on August 25; just 18 hectoliters per hectare produced)

Bright medium red. Rather cool nose offers scents of black cherry, dark raspberry, menthol, licorice, black pepper, caraway seed, crushed herbs and spices. Surprisingly smooth and fine-grained on entry, with its almost velvety texture enlivened by notes of fresh herbs, licorice, dried flowers and medicinal black cherry. Offers an attractive combination of subtle sweetness and salinity, conveying clear if subtle soil tones; more black fruits than red. Ultimately a midweight for this bottling. This may not possess quite the density or sweetness to buffer its dusty tannins, at least in the early going, but it's very young and still imploded, and displays considerable power for the vintage. From a very late harvest, beginning on October 2. (13.15% alcohol; 3.4 pH; 3.7 g/l acidity; 41 h/h yield)

Vinous (94)

Bright medium-dark red. Reticent but very pure aromas of cherry, dark berries, licorice, musky underbrush and salty minerals; smells riper and less peppery than the '13, and a bit Cabernet-like. Thick but fresh on entry, then wonderfully suave, juicy and fine-grained in the mid-palate, showing terrific vibrancy and lift as well as a rose petal topnote that's not yet present in the 2015. Still plenty of medicinal reserve here but this is a step up in finesse from the 2013 and distinctly longer and subtler on the aftertaste. Finishes with very fine-grained, tongue-saturating tannins and a subtle whiplash of pungent red and black fruits, minerals and soil. There's incipient body here but the wine is still youthfully imploded and more salty than sweet. Its balance and finesse, though, make it easy to taste today. Extended aeration brought an even silkier texture and lovely sweet Pinot tang of red berries, rose petal and minerals, even a hint of blood orange. Obviously still very young but this wine struck me as a bit more pliant than it was shortly after bottling. It's also hard to believe that such a stylish wine could have been produced here under the old regime. (13.2% alcohol; 3.45 pH; 3.75 g/l acidity; 33 h/h)

Vinous (93)

Vinous (95)

Pure floral, cherry and spice aromas and flavors highlight this aromatic, lush and silky red. Finishes on the taut side, but with intensity and a vibrant structure. Shows fine length, with soft tannins and a savory mineral aftertaste. Best from 2014 through 2029.

Faiveley’s 2011 Corton Clos des Corton is a fitting conclusion to this great night of wine and food. Intensely saline and pointed, the 2011 impresses for its pure energy and tension. The flavors are vibrant and impeccably delineated in a Burgundy that is all about finesse. This is a great showing from the Clos des Corton.

Vinous (92+)

Bright ruby. Fruit-driven aromas of crushed black cherry and dark raspberry convey outstanding pungent lift. Incredibly concentrated, sappy and primary, conveying outstanding juicy purity and compelling thickness to its dark fruit and violet flavors. At once hugely powerful and utterly seamless, this wine finishes with great spicy length and lift. A real essence of Burgundy--and likely to evolve gracefully for 25 years or more.

Burgundy is Pinot Noir’s spiritual home, and nowhere in the world better illustrates terroir than here. Two vineyards side by side result in wines with subtle yet intricate differences in structure and aromatic profile – and often not so subtle differences in price.
