  • Clos de Tart Grand Cru 2017 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (96-98)

The 2017 Clos de Tart Grand Cru was matured in around 80% new oak, the barrels toasted chauff blonde. Jacques Desvauges mentioned that the wine needed oxygen ingress during maturation that only new oak can give. I tasted the component parts (as usual) as well as the blend. This has a very detailed, delineated bouquet offering mainly black fruit mixed with sous-bois, tobacco, clove and bay leaf, the typicité of the appellation showing through nicely. It feels very succinct and yet so fresh. The palate is beautifully balanced on the entry with a killer line of acidity. Pure black cherry fruit is joined by bilberry, hints of black olive and a marine/oyster shell tincture that comes through quite strongly toward the persistent, saline finish, which fans out with confidence. This is a brilliant follow-up to the benchmark 2016 by Jacques Desvauges and his team.

The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru La Forge de Tart opens in the glass with a generous bouquet of ripe cherries, berries and rose petals that are framed by a touch of creamy new oak. The palate is medium-bodied with a citric opening. A little angular at the moment but displays fine depth. This is a fruit-driven Auxey-Duresses that might need another couple of years to smooth its edges.

    Vinous - Neal Martin (94)

The 2017 Pommard Clos des Epeneaux 1er Cru has a wonderful bouquet that fulfills its potential from barrel, offering immediately seductive brambly red fruit, crushed minerals and pressed rose petals. The 25–30% new oak is so neatly folded into the fruit that it is barely noticeable. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and quite citrus-driven, revealing orange peel and blood orange notes. Linear at first and then gently fans out and gains depth toward the persistent finish. Superb.

In contrast to the first two wines, here the nose is sufficiently reduced to render an evaluation difficult. By contrast there is good freshness and verve to the more precisely detailed middle weight flavors where the supporting tannins are notably finer even though the finish is also ever-so-slightly rustic. A quality Volnay villages.

  • Comte Georges de Vogue Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2017 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

The 2017 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru has a complex bouquet that is slightly more Musigny in personality than I expected. There is mainly dark fruit here, mixed with potpourri and incense and becoming more flamboyant as it aerates in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, and quite compact in style because, as François Millet noted, these 2017s are beginning to close down. But there is certainly good density here, and an enticing tensile finish.

Their biggest holding. Oldest vines planted in 1953 and still in good shape. And all more than 25 years old. Deep crimson. The sort of freshness that I associate with stems even though this is fully destemmed. Cedary, cool, dark fruit, intense and just a touch dusty/stony/mineral. • Comte Liger-Belair La Romanee Grand Cru 2017 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (98)

The 2017 La Romanée Grand Cru shows a minuscule touch of VA on the nose, but not enough to cover the intense brambly red fruit underneath, or the veins of blueberry and violet; instead, it lends energy to the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, a killer line of acidity, and firm but fine, satin-textured tannins. This is full of energy and tension and finishes amazingly long and reassuringly luxuriant. Utterly sublime, and it surpasses my expectations from barrel. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

  • Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Aux Reignots 2017 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots 1er Cru has a lot of fruit on the nose (mulberry, red plums and crushed strawberry) and comes across plush and quite oaky, with a little reduction to address. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins and quite rounded, though at the moment, this is dictated by the new oak, which renders the finish a bit generic. The oak may well be absorbed with age, allowing the fruit to shine. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

It is very different in style from those vintages: redder fruit, more transparency, charming, and it wears its heart on its sleeve. Little else is discernible beyond strong reduction and wood toast. More positively is the lovely mid-palate mouthfeel to the medium weight flavors that display fine power and verve before culminating in a lingering if moderately strict and austere finale. Compared to the Chambolle Village, there is more fullness of fruit on the nose, which offers red cherries, crushed strawberry and rose petal aromas.

  • Comtes Lafon Monthelie 1er Cru Les Duresses 2017 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (88)

The 2017 Monthélie Les Duresses was in barrel until October and then racked into tank as Lafon felt it was ready. It has a delightful bouquet of red cherries and crushed strawberry fruit, plus a little sous-bois. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly rustic tannins, but delivers pretty, earthy fruit and a light-hearted finish full of joie-de-vivre.

  • Comtes Lafon Volnay 1er Cru Santenots du Milieu 2017 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

The 2017 Volnay Les Santenots-du-Milieu 1er Cru was opened by Dominique Lafon just because he wanted to compare with the ensuing two vintages. Who was I to stop him? It is very different in style from those vintages: redder fruit, more transparency, charming, and it wears its heart on its sleeve. The palate is full of slightly peppery red berry fruit, saline and spicy with good grip and a long raspberry and wild strawberry finish. So unbelievably drinkable, even at this early stage you’ll finish bottle.

  • Comtes Lafon Volnay 2017 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (91)

The 2017 Volnay Village includes some declassified Santenots and Champans fruit. It has a very pretty bouquet of raspberry and wild strawberry scents, just a touch of undergrowth developing with time. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannin and fine acidity. Elegant and suave, with a fleshy, persistent finish that is perhaps not quite as compelling as the 2018, but has wonderful sheer drinkability.

  • Confuron-Cotetidot Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Suchots 2017 (6x75cl)

    Burghound (91-94)

Little else is discernible beyond strong reduction and wood toast. More positively is the lovely mid-palate mouthfeel to the medium weight flavors that display fine power and verve before culminating in a lingering if moderately strict and austere finale. This too is going to require extended bottle age as it's exceptionally firm, indeed even robust.

  • Coquard Loison Fleurot Cote de Nuits Morey Saint Denis 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (89-91)

The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis Village comes from four climats scattered across the appellation and sees one-third new oak. Compared to the Chambolle Village, there is more fullness of fruit on the nose, which offers red cherries, crushed strawberry and rose petal aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, a fine bead of acidity, a little piquancy toward the finish and a bit of orange zest on the aftertaste. Excellent.

  • Coquard Loison Fleurot Gevrey-Chambertin 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (89-91)

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Village comes from four sectors, 50% in the south and 50% in the north of the appellation, and was completely de-stemmed. This shows just a bit of reduction on the nose, although that will be resolved by bottling time. The medium-bodied palate is fresh and sorbet-like, displaying grainy tannin and kirsch and cassis notes toward the joyous finish. Expect a decade of drinking pleasure.

  • Coquard Loison Fleurot Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru 2017 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (94-96)

There are three barrels of the 2017 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru, two of them new. It has a very well-defined bouquet of blackberry, briar, raspberry and estuarine scents (think of cold marshland on a winter day.) The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, beautifully integrated 100% whole bunch fruit, and fresh and very poised toward the persistent vintage. A superb Grands Echézeaux, and a seriously fine follow-up to the excellent 2016.

  • Coquard Loison-Fleurot Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (89-91)

The 2017 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, matured in 50% new oak, feels rather muted on the nose at the moment, surpassed by the Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and good density, but at the moment it just feels a little voiceless and needs more personality to develop during the remainder of its barrel maturation. Maybe the weak link in their portfolio this year?

  • Coquard Loison-Fleurot Clos-de-Roche Grand Cru 2017 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92-94)

The 2017 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru comes from vines planted in 1933 and 1954, though remarkably, Sébastien told me that one parcel was a fruit orchard as late as 1964. The classy bouquet of mineral-rich red berry fruit, graphite and undergrowth aromas reveals just a hint of morels in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, a very elegant, refined style and a linear finish. Understated and classy.

The 2017 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru comes from vines planted in 1936, and was raised in three barrels this year (two of them new.) It has a clean, precise tightly wound bouquet of blackberry, raspberry preserve, pressed iris and subtle undergrowth, almost peaty aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, quite masculine compared to the Clos de la Roche, and shows firmer grip and persistence on the chalky finish. Very fine and quite cerebral.

Burgundy is Pinot Noir’s spiritual home, and nowhere in the world better illustrates terroir than here. Two vineyards side by side result in wines with subtle yet intricate differences in structure and aromatic profile – and often not so subtle differences in price.
