The 2017 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a fulsome, seductive bouquet of maraschino cherries, crushed strawberry, orange blossom and light tangerine aromas. The palate is almost pixelated on the entry and shows wonderful acidity and mineralité. Tensile from beginning to end, culminating in a vivid, almost sorbet-fresh finish. This is a superb Mazis. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

From vines planted in 1982 in the sloping, southeast-facing part of Faiveley's parcel in the Clos du Roy, the 2017 Mercurey 1er Cru Clos du Roy La Favorite offers up a more overtly oak-inflected bouquet of dark berry fruit, spices, incense and vanilla pod. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and muscular, with ripe acids and an ample chassis of powdery tannin framing a nicely concentrated core of fruit. This shows definite promise, but it will demand some patience.

The 2017 Musigny Grand Cru comprises a blend of the original parcel and the new postage-stamp-sized acquisition between de Vogüé and Roumier. Erwan Faiveley said that his father enjoyed tannic wines and that his only exception was Musigny - because it was so small, it was the only wine vinified using gravity. There is quite a hefty reduction on the nose that makes this difficult to read. The palate, though, is pure class, with filigreed tannin, wonderful focus, firm grip and a very mineral-driven finish. Outstanding.

Vinous (90-92)

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Les Carrières 1er Cru comprises six barrels this year, plus one amphora that may or may not be blended. The barrel sample has a concentrated bouquet of ravishing red berry fruit mixed with iodine and violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, a slightly chalky texture and a focused, quite Morey-like finish that lingers. There is something serious about this Les Carrières that suggests it will be for long-term consumption. I also tasted the wine from amphora. This has more sheen on the nose, more polish, perhaps. The palate is medium-bodied with black cherry and cassis fruit, the fruit profile similar but the texture silkier than the regular blend. There are touches of pain grillé here, and the wood element is just a little more marked on the finish.

Another of the highlights of the range is the 2017 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Combottes, a lovely wine that wafts from the glass with aromas of sweet wild berries, cherries, potpourri and a generous application of toasty new oak that will settle down with a bit of bottle age. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, velvety and nicely concentrated, structured around rich, powdery tannins and lively acids, concluding with good length on the finish.

The 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Lavrottes 1er Cru, which sees 50% new oak, was showing some reduction when I visited the domaine, though there appears to be fine fruit concentration. The fresh, vibrant palate is vivid and tensile, offering crisp, slightly chalky tannin and crunchy red fruit mixed with blueberry toward the finish. There is good backbone here, and so this will deserve at least four to six years in bottle. Excellent.

The 2017 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru bursts with scents of cassis, wild plums, rich spices, forest floor and black truffle. On the palate, it's full-bodied, chewy and concentrated, standing out as one of the deeper, more powerful wines in the range and concluding with a long and expansive finish. While it isn't as refined as Fourrier's domaine bottlings, if this rounds out with further élevage and bottle age, it's a decidedly promising Mazis in the making.

Vinous (96)

The 2017 La Grande Rue has a deep, introspective bouquet, offering more black fruit than red; touches of oyster shell and seaweed percolate through with time. The palate is where the quality shines through, in the filigreed tannins and the wonderful sense of symmetry. Fresh as a daisy without compromising intensity, especially on the pixelated finish, which seems to go on forever. Brilliant. This far exceeded my expectations. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

Vinous (89-91)

The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Les Chaumes 1er Cru has a tightly wound bouquet of crushed strawberry and touches of orange pith, nicely defined if not as vigorous as the 2016. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red cherry and raspberry preserve on the entry, a slight tingle of licked limestone toward the second half and an easygoing but quite persistent finish. Enjoy this over the next decade.

The 2017 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Chaignots 1er Cru has a well-defined bouquet of dark berry fruit, desiccated orange peel and a little rooibos. The new oak is quite prominent and feels a bit reduced. The palate is medium-bodied with chewy tannins, grippy and muscular, perhaps missing some elegance and transparency. The firm finish leaves a spicy aftertaste. Give this three to four years in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.

Burgundy is Pinot Noir’s spiritual home, and nowhere in the world better illustrates terroir than here. Two vineyards side by side result in wines with subtle yet intricate differences in structure and aromatic profile – and often not so subtle differences in price.
