  • Georges Noellat Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru 2019 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (96-98)

For the first time, Maxime Chuerlin decided to use stems in his crown jewel, the 2019 Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru, settling on 25% whole bunch for this year. This was an astute decision, because it lends freshness and more complexity to the bouquet of blackberry, undergrowth, tobacco and crushed limestone aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, hints of peppermint behind the black fruit and touches of white pepper and sage toward a finish that fans out wonderfully. A slam-dunk for Maxime Churlin. Five barrels produced, matured entirely in new oak.

  • Georges Noellat Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 2019 (3x150cl)

    Vinous (93-95)

The 2019 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaux Monts 1er Cru, matured in 80% new oak, has a very detailed, focused bouquet of blackberry, briar, raspberry jam and light orange peel aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly tarry opening, a smear of dark chocolate combining nicely with the dark berry fruit, but it is unapologetically backward and surly on the finish compared with the Echézeaux or the Vosne Les Chaumes, so give it some serious cellaring.

  • Georges Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Amoureuses 2019 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (95-97)

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses 1er Cru is matured with 25% new oak and around three-quarters whole bunch. It displays extremely fine delineation on the nose, the whole bunch more conspicuous compared to the Bonnes-Mare at the moment, though that will easily be assimilated with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a sense of strictness and linearity and potent marine influences of seaweed and oyster shells. Intense toward the finish, though I feel that the Bonnes-Mares concludes with slightly more grace and precision compared to the Amoureuses this year (at least at the moment).

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Les Cras 1er Cru has one of the more classically-styled, reserved bouquets amongst its flight. Exhibiting more tertiary elements, this is exquisitely defined by presence rather than horsepower. The palate is very well balanced and lush, but not overpowering, with touches of Kirsch and orange rind, and a sprinkling of white pepper. Quite long and with a soupçon of exoticism toward the finish in keeping with the vintage, this is pure class. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

A touch more austere than the magical Veroilles, Barthod's 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras nonetheless gives it stiff competition. Mingling notes of cherries and raspberries with hints of warm spices, orange rind, wild plums and peony, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and complete, with huge texture and concentration.

  • Georges Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 2019 (12x75cl)

    Vinous (89-91)

The 2019 Chambolle-Musigny Village, which includes 35% whole bunch, has a very composed bouquet of disarmingly pure, predominantly black fruit laced with blood orange. Very succinct. The medium-bodied palate features crunchy black fruit with traces of licorice, gaining in density toward a finish that grips gently and evolves a Morey-like structure. Just a touch of heat on the aftertaste, but nothing to worry about.

    Wine Advocate (93-95+)

One of the more dramatic, gourmand cuvées in the range is the 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes, a stunning wine that bursts with aromas of mulberries, raspberries, violets and rose petals, complemented by hints of loamy soil and baking chocolate. Full-bodied, sumptuous and enveloping, its rich, powdery tannins are entirely cloaked in an ample core of ripe but succulent fruit. I found it hard to resist.

  • Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras 2019 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (94-96+)

A touch more austere than the magical Veroilles, Barthod's 2019 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Cras nonetheless gives it stiff competition. Mingling notes of cherries and raspberries with hints of warm spices, orange rind, wild plums and peony, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and complete, with huge texture and concentration. Beautifully integrated but tightly wound and youthfully chalky, it will—as usual—demand a little patience.
