  • Faiveley Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2014 (6x75cl)
  • Faiveley Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2014 (6x75cl)
One of the most classic Grands Crus of Morey-Saint-Denis, the Clos de la Roche is beautiful wine. Well-built with a firm structure and linear backbone of acidity it is tightly wound and will need some time to give away the generous character that is bundled up inside.

  • Faiveley Corton Clos des Cortons Faiveley Grand Cru 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

Bright medium-dark red. Reticent but very pure aromas of cherry, dark berries, licorice, musky underbrush and salty minerals; smells riper and less peppery than the '13, and a bit Cabernet-like. Thick but fresh on entry, then wonderfully suave, juicy and fine-grained in the mid-palate, showing terrific vibrancy and lift as well as a rose petal topnote that's not yet present in the 2015. Still plenty of medicinal reserve here but this is a step up in finesse from the 2013 and distinctly longer and subtler on the aftertaste. Finishes with very fine-grained, tongue-saturating tannins and a subtle whiplash of pungent red and black fruits, minerals and soil. There's incipient body here but the wine is still youthfully imploded and more salty than sweet. Its balance and finesse, though, make it easy to taste today. Extended aeration brought an even silkier texture and lovely sweet Pinot tang of red berries, rose petal and minerals, even a hint of blood orange. Obviously still very young but this wine struck me as a bit more pliant than it was shortly after bottling. It's also hard to believe that such a stylish wine could have been produced here under the old regime. (13.2% alcohol; 3.45 pH; 3.75 g/l acidity; 33 h/h)

  • Faiveley Echezeaux Grand Cru 2014 (6x75cl)

    Vinous (92+)

(from a parcel close to Bouchard's in En Orveaux): Good medium red. Medicinal cherry, licorice, peppery herbs and minerals on the nose, lifted by a floral topnote. At once dense, fine-grained and juicy; seamless but a bit withdrawn, even reduced, offering savory mineral complexity to its redcurrant, raspberry and cranberry fruit flavors. Uncompromisingly dry wine in a cool, energetic, even slightly lean style, in need of patience. But there's lovely density of texture here. The tannins are firm-edged on the lively, youthfully medicinal back end. This grand cru gained in sweetness with extended aeration.

Bright medium red. Subdued, slightly medicinal scents of cherry, raspberry, licorice, black pepper and wild herbs, complicated by spices and a hint of leather. Tight and taut, with rather ungiving cherry, menthol and crushed stone flavors in need of time in bottle to relax and unwind. Not a fleshy or sweet style--in fact a bit dusty today--and in need of patience. Finishes with slightly dry-edged, firm tannins and lingering spiciness. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Faiveley's 2014 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru has a very perfumed bouquet with pure dark plum, bergamot and pressed rose petal aromas that filter from the glass. Wonderful. The palate is very well balanced with a fine line of acidity, tensile from the start with hints of bay leaf and spice toward the structured and persistent finish. This is a very strong showing from Faiveley, a really marvelous Mazis-Chambertin for the long-haul. Tasted September 2017.

    Wine Advocate (89)

The 2014 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a powerful nose with broody dark berry, cola-tinged fruit that need more delineation and terroir-expression--the winemaking comes through a little strongly here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple red berry fruit, quite plush tannin and a little more...decorum...than the aromatics, as if it has just remembered that it is a Grand Cru. I appreciate the focus here on the finish; I just wish the aromatics could muster more sophistication.

The 2014 Morey St Denis 1er Cru Clos de la Bussière has a slightly earthy bouquet with fine definition and red berry fruit with a touch of bay leaf. The palate is fresh and crisp: supple tannin, lovely balance here and freshness, and that mineral seam peaking over the surface towards the tensile and poised finish. The is suffused with wonderful purity and nervosité. Yum yum! Whenever I meet Christophe Roumier, I get the impression of a Burgundy superstar in the eye of a storm. Around him, the world over, Roumier is the Holy Grail for collectors bidding astronomical sums for bottles that bear his family name. There is a cavalcade of visitors yearning to tour his cellars and meet the man...just to look at his barrel-and-a-bit of Musigny would be enough. And Christophe himself? Well, he just the usual down to earth, self-effacing gentleman that he always is and always will be. He's just concerned with his vines and his winery. All the hullabaloo out there beyond Chambolle? Well, sometimes I think he would prefer if it could all be left to the likes of DRC and Leroy. Christophe never asked to be an icon.

Very classy juice; Boillot told me he used the same precise barrique for the Volnay Champans and that he plans to use more Remond barrels in the future. • Geantet-Pansiot Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2014 (12x75cl)

  • Georges Mugneret Gibourg Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2014 (1x75cl)

    Vinous (98)

The 2014 Ruchottes-Chambertin is a wondrous wine. Two recent tastings in Burgundy reconfirmed its strong performance when poured blind at the Burgfest tasting. It has an intense pomegranate and raspberry scented bouquet that seems to switch up through the gears with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied and lithe, laden with succulent black fruit and insistent grip, perhaps just beginning to close up for a while. Outstanding. Tasted in Burgundy.

Bright ruby-red. Very expressive aromas of cherry, smoky minerals and coffee. Lovely silky, spicy, mineral-driven village wine with intense flavors of dark cherry, raspberry and chocolate, plus a hint of menthol. Still needs a couple years to absorb its dusty, slightly chocolatey tannins. Dry and classic.

  • Georges Noellat Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru 2014 (2x75cl)

    Vinous (94)

Medium red, not especially saturated. Alluring lift to the aromas of red berries, minerals and rose petal. Densely packed yet weightless, with the wine's intense rocky character accentuating its youthfully spicy wild berry and floral flavors. Really stunning inner-mouth aromatic character and pungent minerality here. Finishes with outstanding length and perfumed spicy lift. The Georges Noëllat parcel is in the dead center of the appellation and this is indeed a quintessential Grands-Echézeaux with considerable aging potential.

Full medium red. Sexy, slightly high-toned fruit-salad aromas are accented by minerals and spices. Fat, fleshy and ripe, with creamy red and black fruit flavors firmed by a sound mineral underpinning. This round, concentrated wine delivers a lovely combination of energy and sucrosité. Finishes with ripe tannins and serious length. Maxime Cheurlin told me he could enjoy this wine tonight, adding that he likes his wines on the young side.

Matured in 50% new oak, the 2014 Vosne Romanée 1er Cru les Chaumes has a surfeit of energy and tension on the nose that is very precise and defined. There is lovely focus here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, very well judged acidity and a svelte, strawberry and raspberry confit finish that lingers nicely. This is struck through with sophistication and class...a case of less equals more.

  • Georges Roumier Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Clos de la Bussiere 2014 (6x75cl)

    Wine Advocate (93)

Medium red. Sexy oak spices complement aromas of strawberry, rose petal, licorice and earth. Large-scaled, concentrated, creamy and rich; wonderfully generous and layered for the vintage, with its red fruit and spice flavors conveying captivating sweetness. This very young wine finishes with big, ripe tannins and terrific saline persistence. Some day this will be magnificent at the dinner table. It's hard to believe that this fruit was picked with potential alcohol of just 12.3%.

  • Henri Boillot Chambertin Grand Cru 2014 (1x150cl)

    Vinous (94-97)

(aging in two new Remond barrels): Bright, dark red. Deep, brooding aromas of black cherry and smoke are currently muted by a bit of reduction. Then wonderfully sweet, silky and seamless on the palate, conveying an incredibly suave texture and great inner-mouth perfume to the complex flavors of dark berries, earth and smoky oak. Very classy juice; Boillot told me he used the same precise barrique for the Volnay Champans and that he plans to use more Remond barrels in the future. The rising, subtly spicy finish shows uncanny energy and a lighter touch than the Clos de Bèze. A knockout.

Burgundy is Pinot Noir’s spiritual home, and nowhere in the world better illustrates terroir than here. Two vineyards side by side result in wines with subtle yet intricate differences in structure and aromatic profile – and often not so subtle differences in price.
