Burghound (97)The sheer density of fruit here is nothing short of remarkable and the complexity is equally amazing and words cannot really do justice to the breadth of aromas though it is worth noting that there is veritable profusion of the classic sauvage character of a fine Renardes along with notes of plum-like liqueur, earth and a smoky hint. This is a huge and powerful wine with overtly muscular flavors that ooze both minerality and tannin-buffering extract before culminating in a lavish finish of spectacular length. In my view, this is the finest Leroy Renardes since the unbelievable 1999. |

Sweet red cherries, roses, mint and orange peel float on the palate in this sensual, utterly beguiling wine. This is an effortless, gracious Burgundy of the highest level. The 2009 character comes through in spades, but there is something about the Romanée St. Vivant that transcends vintage. Call it the utmost in classicism. The Romanée St. Vivant can be slow out of the gate, but once it starts blossoming in bottle it is truly majestic. Readers lucky enough to find the 2009 are in for a treat. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (93-95)(half of this wine is made with whole clusters, the other half destemmed; my note is on the blend) Good ruby-red. Rich aromas of blackberry, chocolate, espresso and flinty minerality, with pepper and menthol notes from the stem influence. Then large-scaled and creamy but with solid underlying structure and noteworthy tension in spite of having the highest pH of these 2009s. More backward and medicinal than the Grands-Echezeaux. Really builds on the back end, finishing very long and rich, with powerful tannins that will require at least several years of bottle aging. Cabernet-like in its volume and structure. Incidentally, winemaker Mallard noted that the vendange entier component gives the blend its bones, while the destemmed portion provides the flesh, but I found a sample of the former component to be wonderfully full, sweet and creamy. |

Vinous (94)The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Fremieres is rich, seductive and incredibly primary, with little in the way of aromatic expressiveness. This is the first wine of these 2009s that is closed in on itself. With time in the glass hints of red cherries and flowers begin to emerge, yet this remains an implosive wine in need of considerable cellaring. The depth of the fruit and the elegance of the tannins are impossible to miss, but this multi-dimensional wine begs for patience. |

Burghound (97)The sheer density of fruit here is nothing short of remarkable and the complexity is equally amazing and words cannot really do justice to the breadth of aromas though it is worth noting that there is veritable profusion of the classic sauvage character of a fine Renardes along with notes of plum-like liqueur, earth and a smoky hint. This is a huge and powerful wine with overtly muscular flavors that ooze both minerality and tannin-buffering extract before culminating in a lavish finish of spectacular length. In my view, this is the finest Leroy Renardes since the unbelievable 1999. |

Vinous (97)The 2009 Romanée St. Vivant has come together beautifully since I tasted it last year. Sweet red cherries, roses, mint and orange peel float on the palate in this sensual, utterly beguiling wine. This is an effortless, gracious Burgundy of the highest level. The 2009 character comes through in spades, but there is something about the Romanée St. Vivant that transcends vintage. Call it the utmost in classicism. The Romanée St. Vivant can be slow out of the gate, but once it starts blossoming in bottle it is truly majestic. Readers lucky enough to find the 2009 are in for a treat. |

Vinous - Stephen Tanzer (93-95)(half of this wine is made with whole clusters, the other half destemmed; my note is on the blend) Good ruby-red. Rich aromas of blackberry, chocolate, espresso and flinty minerality, with pepper and menthol notes from the stem influence. Then large-scaled and creamy but with solid underlying structure and noteworthy tension in spite of having the highest pH of these 2009s. More backward and medicinal than the Grands-Echezeaux. Really builds on the back end, finishing very long and rich, with powerful tannins that will require at least several years of bottle aging. Cabernet-like in its volume and structure. Incidentally, winemaker Mallard noted that the vendange entier component gives the blend its bones, while the destemmed portion provides the flesh, but I found a sample of the former component to be wonderfully full, sweet and creamy. |

Silky-sweet but youthfully tight; like a few of these samples, this round wine gained dramatically in verve and definition with aeration. Finishes with very good lift. (The Gevrey-Chambertin Clos des Issarts was too reduced to assess with confidence on this visit.) |

Vinous (93+)The 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Gruenchers bursts from the glass with a head spinning exotic bouquet that melds seamlessly into layers of dark red fruit. The wine covers every inch of the palate with its superb texture and generous fruit. This turns surprisingly dense and muscular with air, suggesting it has the structure to be a long distance runner. The driven, powerful finish is fabulous. |

The fruit is round and very beautiful, but the wine is so young I can only imagine what might develop in the coming years. The fruit positively explodes on the finish, where floral, spiced overtones add the final layers of complexity. This is a stunning bottle in every way. Anticipated maturity: 2019-2029. |
