Vinous (96+)

Good deep red. Sensational if youthfully subdued nose combines black raspberry, crushed stone, dried flowers, smoky minerality and truffley soil tones. Wonderfully precise and taut in the mouth, with uncanny cut and energy to the dark berry, spice and mineral flavors. Finishes with outstanding backbone and palate-staining perfume. The 2008 vintage doesn't get better than this.

Good deep, bright red. Wild, slightly reduced aromas of dark cherry, spices, smoke and game. Round, supple and sweet, with an almost liqueur-like quality to its red fruit flavors. Benefits from a firming edge of acidity, and enticing notes of minerals, spices and herbs. Lovely village wine.

Wine Advocate (92)

The 2008 Nuits-Saint-Georges Villages from Domaine Leroy is beginning to drink very well, bursting from the glass with a complex bouquet of cinnamon, blood orange, peony, cassis, blackberry and raw cocoa. On the palate, the wine is sappy, expansive and medium-full, with an ample mid-palate, fine-grained tannins and a penetrating, saline finish—weightless but intense. In this vintage Bize-Leroy opted to combine the Nuits lieux-dits that she usually bottles separately: Aux Allots, Aux Bas de Combe and Lavières.

Winery note: The Premier Cru vineyards of Nuits-Saint-Georges are divided into sections.
Damodes is positioned on the north side of the village immediately above Boudots (which sits adjacent to possibly Burgundies greatest premier Cru Vosne-Romanée Malconsorts) and on the border with Vosne-Romanée
The vineyard is on the upper slope with well-draining soil. The wines, whilst clearly made in the style of Nuits-Saint-Georges, show an influence from Vosne-Romanée next door. Notable floral notes and black fruit flavours.

Vinous (91+)

Medium red. Enticing nose offers black cherry, flowers, red licorice and minerals. Suppler and broader but less refined on entry than the Taillepieds, with distinctly darker fruit flavors. Strong acidity ultimately gives this pure wine a youthfully austere character. Finishes with excellent length and spice character. This tight wine calls for five years of cellaring.

Vinous (91-94)

Bright, deep red. Medicinal hints of black cherry, raspberry, licorice and coffee. Juicy but imploded on entry, then tight in the middle and folded in on itself. Finishes very long and aromatic, but with a firm spine of tannins and acids dominating today. Meo found this seductive at the beginning but notes that the racking eight days before my visit is currently suppressing the texture of a number of his top bottlings. The yield here was just 20 hectoliters per hectare in 2008, added Meo, and the Brulees even lower than that.

Vinous (91)

Good full, deep red. Slightly reduced but nuanced aromas of currant, black raspberry, violet, licorice and sassafras. At once sweet and savory, with strong supporting structure to the chewy dark berry and spice flavors. A bit youthfully musclebound today but this very young wine possesses the energy and depth to reward patience.

Vinous (90+)

Bright medium red. Reticent but aromatic nose combines red berries, burnt orange, minerals, flowers, cardamom and star anise. Enters silky and sweet but ultimately displays less depth and concentration than the captivating nose suggests. Doesn't quite deliver in the middle palate but finishes with good sneaky length and harmonious tannins. Will this expand with time in bottle?

Jancis Robinson (18.5)

Four barrels made from 103 year-old vines. The yield in 2008 was just 12 hl/ha (‘We lose money on it’, according to Laurent Ponsot). Very opulent with a hauntingly layered nose. Almost more reminiscent of a cherry liqueur than a wine. Great energy – rather like a healthy drink for its real spine of life. Subtle, sweet, wild and long but with excellent freshness. ‘Probably the sort of wine that was drunk 200 years ago,’ Ponsot claims.

Initially there was a touch of reduction so be sure to decant this. With a few minutes of air pretty aromas of complex and cool red pinot fruit, earth and a hint of humus give way to equally earthy medium weight flavors that possess good volume and a fine muscularity, all wrapped in a very firm but not aggressive finish. This understated effort should be lovely in a few years.

Burgundy is Pinot Noir’s spiritual home, and nowhere in the world better illustrates terroir than here. Two vineyards side by side result in wines with subtle yet intricate differences in structure and aromatic profile – and often not so subtle differences in price.
